Tr3vor
So i've been wondering, which has more pixel pushing power? My opinion is that the xbox has more power than the wii, look at starwars battlefront. It looks 2x better than any other wii game i've seen. Also I think on wikipedia or something i saw that xbox has pixel shaders and the wii doesn't. What is your opinion or fact?

I love me some Wii, but it seems pretty well documented that 360 is more powerful graphically. This may not always show up to your eye, because games are optimized for the system (i.e. dont try to do more than you can do). Certainly either gets the job done for me. I have always loved what the Microsoft spokesman said at (I think) E3 - basically "isn't this great, consumers will be able to buy a Wii and an Xbox 360 for what the PS3 will cost". +remowilliams
Comparing it to an Xbox 1 might be worth a bit of discussion - but if you're talking about a 360(?) it utterly destroys the Wii in gfx and processing power.

Actually that's what I thought the thread was originally about as there's pretty much no contest between the Wii and Xbox 360. They're two different tiers of systems, in a sense, although they do compete directly with one another. In terms of comparing the Wii to the original Xbox console, the Wii is slightly more powerful than the original Xbox on paper. In practice, the difference is often negligible. The original Xbox specs are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox#Technical_specifications The Wii specs are here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii#Technical_specifications As you can see, sometimes the Xbox wins. Sometimes the Wii. But as a total package, the Wii out-muscles the original Xbox by just a step or two. Generally speaking, they're on about the same level. svenski
I agree with the comments so far, you can't really compare the Wii to the Xbox 360 when it comes to power or performance. The Wii's success was down to the motion controllers and the fact it revolutionized console gaming and it appeals to pretty much all ages. Even before the Xbox Kinect and Sony's move controllers were launched Wii sales slowed considerably and now the console doesn't really stand out against the competition anymore. Maybe the Wii 2 if it ever gets launched will balance the playing field , who knows. I use the Wii now for the homebrew channel, the Wii MC loader and the fact it is easy to hook up to external drives, use with SD cards and USB sticks and as it always hooked up to the TV it makes an easy way to view downloaded movies and play backups. Nearly outselling 360 and ps3 combined. http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/83292/weekly-sales-analysis-25-december-2010-wii-ds-x360-1-mil/ Wii is on a BIG upswing. Video
I would say the Xbox wins out (you mean original right?) The wii is only marginally better than the gamecube was, and really, that's all it needs for it's games. But the Xbox had tons of awesome built in video effects, and could do HD easily too, while not used in all games, these can give amazing graphic capabilities for it's time, and IMO, look great even today still. madmax2069
They are damn close to each other but since the xboxs GPU is programmable it holds the edge in that department vs the Wii's fixed GPU offering. the xbox GPU also could pull off effects the Wiis GPU can not. i knew this even before looking at the link. If you really look at the Wiis hardware its just a basically sped up version of the gamecube with more memory available (with maybe a few changes), i am not in any way saying that the Wii is a crap system because its not. It also really depends on what the developers can do with the limits of the hardware.

But the Xbox had tons of awesome built in video effects, and could do HD easily too, while not used in all games, these can give amazing graphic capabilities for it's time, and IMO, look great even today still. Actually the Xbox does not do HD easily at all. With the 360 you have a lot of power so pushing 720p is not very difficult and you practically get free AA to make things even nicer. Then the excellent hardware scaler handles all of the other resolutions. Most games on the 360 are rendered at, or around 1280x720 and then scaled if you are using something other than 720p by the hardware scaler which means that service is also basically free. On the Xbox you have to be able to render at any resolutions you intend to support. When I began adding Xbox support to Odamex the SDL library did not even have support for HD resolutions. I added it. Now you can request any HD resolution from SDL on Xbox but that does not mean you are going to like the result. In the case of Odamex the 720p performance was very poor out of the box. I spent a considerable amount of time adjusting the compilers optimization settings as well as the code to make 720p perform. I probably spent a bit more time than some games would required because Odamex supports vanilla Doom demos which depend on precise engine operation that matches the original engine and even slight loss of floating point precision causes the demos to desync. The compiler used for the Xbox does not have the same options for floating point precision that current MS compilers do and some optimization settings can even change the order a floating point operation is performed which can slowly build up to massive desyncs when random number generation is involved. But I needed that optimization to get 720p out of the machine so I had to change the code to handle the possibility of altered order of floating point math. Anyway, I digress. Odamex actually supports picking resolutions from a list (based on the options enabled on your system) and you can switch between SD and HD resolutions with an instant result. With 1920x1080 the performance is really not good enough to be considered playable. You could play it, more so on small levels than large ones, but the framerate is obviously not smooth. Also, on really large maps it is possible to just run out of memory when running it at 1080i. So, unfortunately, I disable 1080i support in the SDL library when I produce the Xbox release builds so that releases don't display the option at all. With the 360 I could support 1080p... and I wouldn't even need to use the scaler. Also, I have already spent some amount of time in the last few months porting to Wii. If Wii offered 720p I am certain I could support it in Odamex and it would be smooth. Another game that I have ported, but have not released at this time, is Quadra. I forked the current Quadra source and I developed for the two systems jointly so there is very little difference in the code I have written for the 2 systems. Wth Quadra the Wii doesn't run circles around the Xbox but it definitely has a clear edge in performance. Keep in mind this is a game with no 3D graphics.
Hyper_Eye
XBox 360 is better than Wii, but Wii is far better than XBox. I mean, the Wii is so simple to mod! It can play 2600 games! (Well, so can my DS) Have you never read a single thing about Xbox modding? It is probably the most moddable system ever developed. The only console with a comparable modding/homebrew scene is the Dreamcast and I think the Xbox probably surpassed it. The amount of software available for the Xbox is incredible and there are multiple ways to approach modding it. From chips to savegame exploits... to simple hdd swaps and setting up the mod on a PC almost anyone with an Xbox has what they need to mod it. HBC is nice and the Wii homebrew scene is nice but it just doesn't compare. I wouldn't want to take anything away from Tantric because he has done a lot of great work on the Wii but the emulators on Wii are not even close to comparable to the Xport/madmab emus available on Xbox. They are progressing even today (and madmab is a well known member of this forum though by a different handle.) Also, the Wii has some decent media software but it is no XBMC. The bottom-line is that the HBC and the Wii homebrew scene are mild compared to what the Xbox has to offer. As the Wii homebrew community progresses that may change but I think it is very likely most people who were part of the Xbox scene and a lot of the Wii scene is going to be moving to PS3 as it is really about to be busted wide open. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JqbJOZxmxQ
Video
Well, I don't know about how easily user modding of the Xbox can get HD, but I do know there are quiet a few Xbox production titles that are HD to be had on there. It obviously wasn't built in to do HD like the 360, but it was done, I think towards the end, people actually got bored with HD because to many games were doing it....though I don't think I played a single game on there in HD, cause the first HD TV I got, was for my 360. From what I've heard, Wii can't even do HD, and for whatever weird reason, it can't even do full480P with AV (though AV is more than up to the task...at least the Xbox did it just fine, or at least clearer than the Wii does. Of course, HD won't be important on an SD TV, Xbox vs wii on a regular TV, the wii would probably look better as it's still getting all the new tricks and such to make games look better, but on any HD the xbox would win out. I'm familiar for years with the Xbox scene and tantric's stuff on the Wii. I have my Xbox still using the old Avalaunch dash and I haven't really gone back to it since I got my Wii homebrewed. The Wii is still not 100% where the Xbox is in terms of the homebrew\emulation scene, thats why I still have my Xbox. I wouldnt count out the Wii though. Its making progress and of course the USB loader thing that everyone loves makes it just as desirable as the Xbox. The cool thing? You can connect a large hard drive to the Wii without opening it up like an Xbox (although I'm sure thats been done by now on the Xbox). Some games look sweet on the Xbox that are listed with 720p etc on their boxes. I dont know about comparisons, its all about the developer. I cant ever see Ninja Gaiden Black (Xbox) and the God of War games (PS2) look as good on the Wii. I just can't. I have a boatload of Wii games and the only game that springs to mind that comes close to looking that good is Metroid Prime 3.

The development tools I use on the Xbox are the same ones all developers used. It is the same API. The answer is that it is equally as difficult whether you are working on a production title or a homebrew title. The Xbox simply was not capable of pushing most of the games released on it in HD resolutions. Only a tiny fragment of the games used HD resolutions. There is a complete list here: http://www.hdtvpub.com/index.cfm?search=&Platform=Xbox&r720p=yes&r1080i=yes&OrderBy=resolution&daStartRow=1&showRows=25&searched=do The hardware in the Wii would be capable of pushing all of those games at the same resolutions. I think Nintendo decided that they wouldn't support HD at all since most games would not be able to play in HD. That would have left them in the same situation as the Xbox... most games aren't HD and so nobody really considers the console HD or knows about that capability. Looking at the list of the games that were HD on the Xbox... most of them either had fully pre-rendered backgrounds or large portions of pre-rendered graphics like Steel Battalion LOC. Also, most of those games sucked. How many of those couple of games did you know were HD? What you did get with Xbox that you didn't get with PS2 and GC was the large amount of games that supported progressive scan. On the Gamecube most 480p titles were Nintendo titles.
ComputerSpaceFan
Excellent info. Does anyone know why there never was a Wii game that ever came close to either Burnout Revenge or even F-Zero GX which were previous generation racers? I got Need for Speed Nitro in the hopes it might finally be the mature racing game the Wii was waiting for but even with its reduced cel-shaded graphics it still didn't look anywhere near as complex as either of those previous games. I realize a lot of the blame for a lack of Wii titles not even resembling the graphical power of the previous generation is due to laziness on the behalf of developers (and I can't blame them after Mad World and Deadly Creatures bombed) but it's good to know that the hardware is at least technically capable of good looking games. vdub_bobby
Some of my favorite Xbox games are Ninja Gaiden and Halo 1/2, so coming to the Wii I was a little disappointed with many of the games, that they didn't look as good or better than those, especially since the hardware was essentially 5 years old by the point, all the fancy tricks should have been common knowledge - IMO the devs who have put out all those crappy looking Wii games have no excuse and should be ashamed. But at this point I think pretty much every decent Wii game looks as good or better than the better Xbox games (i.e., GoldenEye doesn't look as good as Halo 2 IMO but just as good or better than Black or Half-Life 2). And the very best-looking Wii games look better than the best Xbox games - Metroid Prime 3, Super Mario Galaxy, New SMB, The Conduit, Monster Hunter Tri all are, IMO, better looking than the best of the Xbox. And that's coming from a guy who considers Ninja Gaiden the best game of the last 15 years. So kind of a mixed bag, I suppose, just like the Wii in general.

Video
Holy crap, there's that many? I was thinking more on the lines of 6 (though actually knew of only 2 and I have one of those...maybe I should hook an Xbox up sometime to an HD set to see how it looks?) Anyhow, I may have to get into collecting some of those. Funny how it seems so few games supported 1080i, while all of them supported 720, granted making one resolution instead of two or three is better/easier, but then, why not use the lower resolution? Anyhow, what gets me isn't that average wii games don't compare to the average Xbox game....what really gets me is the average wii game doesn't compare to the average cube game. Seriously, where are the games that look like Starfox Adventures?

They released a complete edition afterwards called Ninja Gaiden "Black" that contained add on packs, better camera and new weapons. The arcade game and the NES games were unlockable's in the various versions. I'm refering to Ninja Gaiden Black to be precise. I havent gone back to it for a few years so it may not hold as much stance with me anymore but back in 2004-2005 there was nothing else like it. It probably turned me into an Xbox fan. More than Halo ever could have done. But I like the genre so its a matter of taste too. The God of War team really shocked me as well with those games....cause I didnt think the PS2 was capable if you know what I mean. Really cool when dev's put effort into what they do. Its amazing what they can pull off on a console.

Though, in all fairness, my Wii pushes way more pixels than my 360 purchased the same month as the 360 went RROD within six months and gave up the ghost entirely a few months after it was repaired.
