PS3 encryption keys now on the net

Looks like Sony has decided to go with serial keys to fix the piracy problem.

http://www.thinq.co.uk/2011/1/21/sony-rumoured-be-adding-serial-keys-ps3/

I was afraid they'd do something stupid like this. Basically, if you don't have your system connected to the internet you don't play. Not sure what this will do to rentals but it pretty much kills buying used games, since you can't be sure they included serial isn't banned.

Key word: Rumour

Also, apparently the rumour started on 4chan so...

...it was started by a bunch of pedophiles?

I say if you can't beat them! Join them!

Seriously though, you'd think they'd make some type of "ignore" feature for game matching where you can just "ignore" people that you know cheat and then you don't have to worry about getting matched up with them.

Live does something like this but it fails hard. you give someone a bad review (which adds them to your avoid list) but it does not block them from joining a lobby you are in, you just have less of a chance to run into them.

I bet if PSN had something like this it would probably be around the same.

I ordered SuperCar Challenge from Hong Kong today and it made me think of the encryption keys being out. I wonder how many of the games being sold online from Asia in the future are actually going to be real licensed products instead of pirated copies since they'll be guaranteed to play fine.

It also makes me wonder how many unlicensed games will get produced like Bible Adventures, and Bible Buffet for the NES, or Super 3D Noah's Ark for the Super Nintendo except now they'll just work instead of the workarounds the old games needed.

Maybe we'll see some unlicensed porn titles as well.

I've been meaning to import that one for a while. The demo was pretty good, but every time I've checked the price has been a bit high for me.

I'm hoping for unlicensed releases, myself. That should up the variety of games available by motivating a lot of smaller players to enter the market. As for if it happens or not, beats me. Sony still has control of bluray manufacture, right?. Does the ps3 take bd-r's? Will it boot software from cd/dvd? I suppose it's entirely likely that China's already got their best men on this case. China rocks.

Also in the news, there's a new ps3 firmware update. 'security-related' of course. I'm not updating until I know what's what, and I figure within 24 hours it should all be sorted.

I was playing MW2 last night, and I saw a Meryy-go-round made of care packages, and you could press square to ride it. then some dude brought up a debug thing that was on the right and said the framerate, host, etc. AC-130 Bombs in machine gun mode. its horrible.

Sure I read Sony can ban all consoles running hacked hardware. Great news - don't see the point of what the hackers have been doing, just making things crappy for the rest of us. Also don't understand the problems people here seem to have with the PS3. I'm very happy with mine & am happily enjoying this generation of hardware & software, some truly stunning games around!

I notice the stories are all about banning black ops hackers.

Are they not banning hackers of other call of duty games?

That'd be a dirty move.

Oddly I've yet to see any obvious hacking in the two online games I play (GT5 and MAG). Probably a matter of time though. If GT5's online multiplayer works like I think it does, being banned for cheating won't be happening.

Like +256% xp for every game? Yeah. That has to be.

That's actually a promotion for the 1st anniversary of MAG. It's officially sponsored and it lasts through tomorrow. (link)

Some of the modes are faction-neutral until then too.

Oh, then I've never seen a MAG hack then.

Wow that is a kick ass promotion!! I wish more games did little things like that for gamers.

I know Demons Souls has been pretty good about having special days in the past. Always liked that.

(possible) awesome news

more pics here

Also (here) is an interesting little note about bluray HD video going on to DVD's. Does it work on standard players? Is that how they're getting pirated games off the ground so quickly? China is clever.

Maybe I was early in giving up hope that we could just burn a common dvd and run apps/games from it on unmodified systems.

It appears so:

It's still not really blu-ray quality though if it's 720p or 1080i although I have no idea how much of a difference that really is.

The new firmware update includes updated security keys, including the random element that was absent from the original keys, which lead to the system being hacked. New games will be signed with these keys, and Sony has produced a whitelist of approved software – essentially PS3’s existing games library – that is allowed to run with only the original keys. Sony evidently believes this will re-secure its console, but Hervais believes the opposite.
Hmm not to sure on this whether Sony actually went the whitelist route or not. Anywho now if they could just fix that hard drive corrupt error they accidently re-introduced.
