"bersten" is not an action performed by a person. In german language only the door can "burst", most likely as reaction to a real explosin or some other force really destroying it. Depending on the overall context, you'd translate that either with: "Er stürmte durch die Tür" as in he "rushed through the door" "Er brach durch die Tür." as in he opened it with brute force. And I think the simple past of "bersten" is "barst", if you're really looking for that.
