61,710 after a few games.

It takes a while to figure out what all the weapon levels are. I finally settled on favorites.

Can't get past the Lawrence Welk bubble extravaganza on level 2. It's just too much!

This game is strangely unsatisfying. Life Force is one of the 1st boards I got for my first JAMMA cabinet, so maybe I'm biased--I adore Life Force.

I don't like this game at all. 14,000

Never posted in one of these threads before. I gave this game a whirl last night and was able to get around 50k (I'm not trying to enter this score, I'll post a photo later). I agree with the guy who posted the first entry: those bubbles are complete craziness. Still, surprisingly, I found this game somehow entertaining and traditionally I've not been very interested in shooters.

Is there really no way of continuing, or am I missing something? I kind of like that, actually.

For the HSC, no continues are allowed. I haven't played the game so I don't know if there are continues or not.

I'm not normally in this... but I LOVE me some Gradius 3, but the snes version is much easier than the Arcade.

Its time to fire up my laptop and my SSF4 stick!

Some helpful tips for you all:

Go into edit mode, and make your ? and + Shrink and Lives as Options.

Once you die in this game, its impossible to get back started again, so using that option will make you go farther than before.

Shrink will help you with those elusive bubbles ;)

After a few runs, 61,310. I've never participated in a HSC event before, but I noticed it was a Gradius title this week. However, I'm not quite sure how valid my score is, given that I occasionally encountered some very noticeable slowdown.

I could definitely do better, most obviously because in the game where I got this score, I crashed into the ceiling while I had full shields up. :) D'oh!

onmode-ky

P.S. I'm not aware of continues being available in any Gradius title aside from Gradius V (PS2). As for III being unsatisfying, well, it is often cited as being abnormally difficult, more so than its well refined immediate predecessor, in what I've read on the Web. Something like it being unfair, I guess. Note that 10 years passed by before Gradius IV was made.
