Q: When or how can I change my PlayStation Network password?

A: We are working on a new system software update that will require all users to change their password once PlayStation Network is restored. We will provide more details about the new update shortly.

Woohoo, another system update!

I talked with one of my son's this morning and he told that he traded in his PS3 for an Xbox360 last night and that another of his friends was doing the same thing this morning. My son said simply that he'd had enough with all that Sony was/wasn't doing over the past year.

I wonder how many others in the PS3 universe may be considering the same option?

I would guess actually very few, but that won't stop people from citing anecdotal stories of friends doing this as if they represent a majority.

Is anybody else hoping for a DDOS the second they try to bring this pig back online?

At this point the comedy of it all is my only source of playstation-related amusement.

No. Frankly, I don't care about what's happening with the hackers or Sony, I'd just like to be able to play online again (potential stolen information aside, of course).

Also, sorry if this sounded too aggressive. I didn't mean it that way :(

Probably not too many. My guess is the majority of people already gave up on the PS3 months ago when the shit hit the fan.

Even though some folks here like to tell you hacking the PS3 and sending the information out to the masses was a good thing, that hacker are mostly righteous, innocent tinkers who would benefit from the information and bring all sorts of goodness and wonder to the PS3 gaming community, the logical people knew it was the beginning of the end.

Even a 15 year old isn't blind to reality.

Modding's probably been bad for ps3's officially-supported lifespan, but that's on Sony's response as much as it's bad on pirates/hackers/modders. For some reason it suddenly got 'not okay' to rip into your system--probably the online cheating more than anything, which is a problem I certainly acknowledge as a serious down side.

With PS2, hacking was one of the *best* parts of it, and it's where my game hours are going as soon as I get home.

That system was opened to piracy and homebrew fairly early in its life. Nothing finer than having ~1/4 of my game library jukeboxed on its nearly load-time free HD, full media player, and tons of fan translations/adjustments. I missed the memo as to when it stopped being anything but awesome to have systems like this. Modded PS2 just rocks, and it's not as though modding doesn't have a lot of positives.

In the future, I do hope that the tinkerers will end up supporting the PS3 after it is replaced, and I do expect the timetable on that replacement has been jumped up a bit. Since many PS3 multiplayer games are p2p hosted anyway, perhaps a homebrew matchmaking service could be bodged together. Maybe even a homebrew PSN store where you can load things right through the browser or even the store icon (the psp has at least one website like that).

Hell, maybe there will be a game modding community like on PC. 800+ cars in GT5 (and many tracks) could use their textures cleaned up. Who knows, it might not be that hard to add new cars/tracks, missions, or cleaner menus. I can see myself working on it.

Of course as far as it's going now, I just sit back, laugh a little, and enjoy the failure. I guess Sony wants to make it so that this ship has to sink first before anybody can even try do-it-yourself repairs. Keep fighting the fight Sony, I'm sure you'll win, and make everybody else involved a winner along the way.

Maybe that's it. Times change. This isn't 1990 anymore. Hacking a game console can now effect million.

I actually never minded hacking a console in the past, but if your hacking effects me, then put a stop to it altogether I say.

Too many bad apples that think nothing about anything but themselves. Just the way it is.

A company is going to do what it takes to fight it. They invest a lot in products like the PS3. I don't blame them.

I'd rather have the latest video game console playing the latest games with my friends all over the world, even at the expense of your convenience hacks. Wouldn't bother me in the least if hacking a system today bricked it. I'd even agree to that before purchasing it. I don't think most people buy a system for anything other than what it was intended for. All those people are now screwed.

Edited for greater details:

I just wanted to post on here that my coworker's wife just got called by his credit card company, about some fraud charges.

Three $100 charges were put onto her account.

It was used on PSN once to buy Soul Calibur 4 stuff.

The link says it all.

I feel terrible for all those people whose cards have been stolen. They did nothing wrong in this...

For the third time...

I'm not posting that picture to be cute or funny either. I am enraged. I'm trying to cut back on my usage of the F-bomb, but seriously...

FUCK SONY.

I knew it back in the 90s with the PS1, and I should have known it now. I will be loading my PS3 with CFW this weekend, and I'll not be looking back. I'll probably be picking up a few PS2 slims while I can still get them, and I don't know what I'm going to do with not having a PS3 when my current one dies. I need one around to play MGS4, but that's it. My PSP has been CFW'd, and I can hopefully fix it if it breaks, and the UMD drive can go suck an egg. I'm done buying Sony products new. Used PS1 and PS2 games are okay, but that's it. I don't even want to play another PS3 game besides MGS4. I'm counting down the days until my big-ass Sony TV bites the dust so I can buy anything buy a Sony TV to replace it and get it the hell out of my house.

And I know Sony says the credit card data is encrypted, but whatever. We all know how good their encryption is, and even if the CC data really hasn't been decrypted, I'm pissed off enough at them for the unencrypted user data that having the CC thing put me over the edge only makes it easier to do something that I should have done already, and that is to not buy anything Sony ever again.

From my perspective, Sony did screw up. They have a lot going on, and I think they should leave the network stuff to a third party, maybe SEGA, they never screwed the pooch with X-Band or the DC Network. Yes, I call Sega to take over the PS Network! Can you imagine the revenue Sega would get, the clout ro release something really cool instead of all the crappy clones? I can.

As annoying as a giant all capitol letters "FUCK SONY" is, that picture you keep posting is way worse.

This is how I get every time you post it....

That's the whole point.

I did some video gaming with Sony, and all it netted me was my information being sold on the black market.

Way to go, Sony. Way to go.

So, you keep posting the picture over and over again to irritate the people here?

Well. Way to go. Mission accomplished.

Great link, cimerians. I'd plus one you if I wasnt mobile.

No prob. Watch your stuff though like call your credit card company and put a fraud alert on it or cancel it and get another. Change passwords too.

You never know. Better not to take a chance.

Being in the network business myself I know they got their hands full.

I dont blame the engineers or devs at Sony if anything it was probably the suit and ties that most likely ignored things and kept going after Hotz when they probably should have started securing their network\PSN.

I dont feel for the sucker who broke in though. He's either going to owe millions or be in jail for a while.

We are talking consumer money and credit card companies here. He's screwed if found.
