HammR25
I just wonder how much money this is all costing them. People can't rent movies on Qriocity, people can't buy anything on PSN, they're going to have to extend credit to everyone that has Playstation Plus and any pay MMORPG. It's going to take awhile for people to even WANT to buy anything on those services again, game sales will be down, they're going to have class action lawsuits to deal with, and they're going to have to pay to secure their network. Microsoft's $1 billion write off for RROD doesn't look so bad right now, especially considering their online service is a cash cow, not free. Reaperman
My link Sony now blaming 'Anonymous' based on a text file. Not that it really narrows anything down, and for some reason we didn't hear about this long ago. Sony is for cheap tape decks. We can't use Netflix on the old 60GB PS3 I have. Not 100% sure why because on my Slim it says you have to be connected to the PSN in order for Netflix to work, but only does it a couple times before stopping. The 60GB PS3 never stops asking for you to log in and since it's impossible, you simply can't watch anything.

I havent tried it on the slim but movies are on hold for me too until they get things back up and going. This is pretty major shit. This could have a ripple affect on all online gaming. At least when it comes to consumer protection. I pulled my card off of Xbox Live but I never got a chance to do the same on PSN before it got hacked. I'm not using Credit Cards for anything anymore. Better to buy a points card like I'm doing for XBL.

Does this mean I have to get the PS4 to use my NetFlix as soon as it comes out? I guess my father, who got a PS3 for Netflix and blueray, will be completely screwed as soon as there is something new... I did find out that Sony will be giving everyone a month of PlayStation Plus for dealing with their crap. I can't say I even know what the real difference is, but I'll enjoy my free month, and we'll see if it makes me forget this craziness. Probably not, but maybe.

And for the past two weeks its been a waste of money since I can't log into the MLB channel without being logged into PSN. Yeah, I can watch them on my iPhone but that's not the reason I bought a subscription. Mendon Edited May 5, 2011 by Mendon
Itchy Koala
We have an MLB live subscription as well on our ps3. Waste of money there. Not to mention the system was bought two days before the psn crash. Thanks for this extremely flashy doorstop Sony.
moycon
Oh wow I didn't think of that. I hope Sony reimburses you two. That is a legitimate loss for you guys. Some free games that will only be around a month wouldn't compensate I wouldn't think. Jeeze I can't imagine how much cash this is going to cost Sony if they do folk right. madmax2069
This is one reason why i hate when a pay service is tied into a secondary service that has nothing to do with the pay service (netflix, ESPN3, last FM needing a gold sub on live to use them as a example). it seems that PSN needs to work out that issue because there is no reason why you need to be logged into PSN to access MLB live since they do not stream the service from PSN. I can only bet they are getting a hailstorm of complaints over this. Edited May 5, 2011 by madmax2069

There are far too many PS3 fanboys out there that will be over this as soon as PSN is back up and running. I wonder if its too late to move my Duke Nukem pre order to 360? At this point playing it on PSN isn't looking good either.

If you put a deposit down at a major chain (ie: Gamestop or EB Games), you can change your mind. Just recently, I put a deposit down on Homefront and my wife ended up buying it for me the day it came out as a surprise. Even after the launch, they let me move the deposit money over to another game.
Mendon
Oh man.... if this story from Joystiq is true: The House of Representatives Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade continues to seek answers regarding last month's breach of the PlayStation Network's security. The one it got yesterday from Purdue professor and security expert Dr. Gene Spafford is troubling, to say the least, if the situation he detailed actually played out as described. Spafford told the subcommittee that, according to security mailing lists he subscribes to, "individuals who work in security and participate in the Sony network" had learned "several months ago" that PSN was hosted on servers running "very old versions of Apache software that were unpatched and had no firewall installed." The professor continued, "they had reported these [issues] in an open forum that was monitored by Sony employees, but had seen no response and no change or update to the software." The timeframe for these events was "two to three months prior to the incident where the break-ins occurred," according to Spafford. It's important to note that his account of the situation and information is second-hand. Still, the potential for this testimony to cause the subcommittee, headed by representative Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), to demand more answers from Sony -- and, more specifically, the individuals mentioned by Spafford -- does exist. Sony could not be reached for comment. LINK Mendon
Reaperman
Day 17, then. I've about reached my tolerance threshold and am genuinely considering a Wii. 'Considering' probably isn't the correct word anymore, since I've already ordered a component cable and wireless sensor bar and am waiting for the new package. HatefulGravey
Yep, PSN down for all this time and what we get is a free month of PSN+. When that month is up everything you got from that month is gone, so getting PSN+ free for a month is a trial. They might actually make money off this entire thing now if enough people decide to pa for PSN+ after that month. Just damn Sony. I have to go call GameStop and try to more my Duke Nukem pre order to 360. I commented about it yesterday, now its looking like time to actually do it.

Its is done. I was concerned because I ordered the Ball of Steel Edition but they got it done for me over the phone. Its funny that all this happens as I decide to get more for the PS3 as most of my modern games are for 360... maybe its a sign. Sorry for all this guys, it seems likely this entire outage thing was just to teach me a lesson. Now that I have learned my lesson I'm sure everything will be fine. That would be my luck, but then again I'm pretty sure I'm done with Sony after this anyway. Something about spilling my personal information out all over the place doesn't sit well with me. Reaperman
Kicking Sony in the nuts while they're lying unconscious on the ground isn't totally unexpected. I'm rather looking forward to it. At the the very least, it's a good durability test of the new PSN--but the PSN's track record of survivability isn't on their side. My guess is that folks are linining up to 'test' all the improvements that have been made. Edited May 6, 2011 by Reaperman

Here you go: " Hackers allegedly planning third attack on Sony 6 hours ago - 8:00 AM on 05.06.2011 | Jim Sterling After weeks of downtime and PR nightmares, you'd think Sony's had enough. Unless you're one of several hackers recently spotted planning a third attack on the company's network. Seriously guys, I think everybody's had enough. According to reports, the hackers are quite openly discussing their next move, and plan to publicize the information they reap -- which could include the personal details of customers. They claim to have already infiltrated some of Sony's servers in the wake of the previous two breaches. If this attack does go down, it's supposed to do so this weekend. Brace yourselves! If anything, this'll be a test of Sony's new security measures but even I -- a guy who holds Sony culpable to a large degree -- is starting to feel sorry for the PS3 platform holder. Cybergoth
Well... so it's down for almost three weeks now and I don't even notice. All my games are working and it seems the only stuff that's gone are the things I don't like, don't use or which I'm boycotting anyway. Reaperman
I think the PSN requirement for Netflix is somewhat recent firmware-wise. Mine complains, but eventually lets me through after 2-4 connection attempts. I normally use my 360 to watch Netflix anyway though.
