Tr3vor
Well, I'm trying mame on my computer that hooks up to my tv, and I want to play galaga, but every variant that I try to load up, it says there is rom images or something missing. can anyone help? Austin
That means that you have ROM images missing. As new versions of MAME are released, updated ROM images for games are also occasionally put out as well. Chances are an updated version of the Galaga ROMS have been released and you don't have the set that's fully compatible with your version of MAME. Example from my personal experience, the Killer Instinct 1 and 2 ROMS I have work on a MAME build from two or three years ago. They do not work in the latest build of MAME, however (I get the same error as you).
Tr3vor
well, I've tried a ton of different roms and a few different versions of MAME and it still doesn't work. I got Berzerk, Phenix and Q-bert working, but not galaga or anything else.
Austin
You're probably just SOL man if other games work. Buy a Namco Museum collection, there are various old versions that are mega-cheap (for instance, the N64 version). BTW, MAME can be hit or miss. It's not like a NES emulator where the majority (if not all) games work. I have a lot of games on my HD that won't boot in MAME. It's just a part of using this program. retrorussell
Make sure you put the games in the "roms" directory. If you keep more than one version of MAME in an arcade folder, each version builds it own "roms" folder. I had it happen before where I had to go under Options/Directories and tell it where the roms were. Try to keep just one version at a time, so you don't have 2 seperate "roms" folders. Something else I discovered recently is that semi-recent versions of MAME screwed up some games when you have the cheats enabled under game properties/miscellaneous (box is checked). The newest version fixed that; Galaga was one of the games that had a problem crashing when the cheats were enabled.
Trebor
"MAME: nothing works"...LOL. More like "MAME: I can't get Galaga to work" or "MAME: Galaga doesn't work"; or some games don't run. You said you got Phoenix and Q-bert working, but tried "a ton of different roms" and "different versions of MAME" to get "Galaga or anything else" to work. Regardless, MAME is already providing the answer to you... "...every variant that I try to load up, it says there is rom images or something missing." If ROMs are missing, the game will not run. You can try 'two tons' or 'three tons' or every set you can find, and every version of MAME ever made; but if the set you have is not compatible with the MAME version you are using the game will never run. Galaga has worked find for me since it's implementation in MAME all the way to 0.142u6 (Latest version). The key is doing the work and research to keep your set(s) up to date. Which really is cake with tools like ClrMAMEPro and others. But, if you want the easy solution/answers here it is: http://www.us-lazarus.com/rom-burner/sets/index.shtml It is easy...Just be ready to pay
VectorGamer
Make sure you have all the parent ROMs for Galaga. In MAME, go to "All Games" in the GUI and set the View to "Grouped." That will show you all the parent ROMs you need for the respective games.

VectorGamer
@rmaerz..."Retrocade" always reminds me of this: Seriously, I just tried to register retrocade.com today and as you can see it wasn't available. I have registered retrocademagazine.com just this morning. In any event, Retrocade is the name of my home arcade and will be the name of my magazine to be released Q4 this year. The new DNS works for me http://www.retrocademagazine.com/ so I will begin transitioning my site from my arcade related content to magazine content this week... NE146
Do an audit on your romset (e.g.alt-A in mameUI, etc.) to find out whats missing in your galaga.zip, then go get it. It's really not much more than that.
Underball
Get the latest version of MAME from the official site. Then, get individual roms from emuasylum or planetemulation. Google these. Or just google MAME .142 roms torrent and download the whole shebang. Be warned, it's like 30gbs.
NE146
Or heck I'll save you the trouble of googling. Just go to http://www.pleasuredome.org.uk/ for your Mame torrent needs.
