So today when I logged into my XBox Live account to do some gaming, I was stumped when I saw there were more points there then what I had yesterday. :ponder:

There's a PayPal account linked to my account but nothing else at this point. I checked both my bank account and PayPal right away and saw no charges for any points. I never got any e-mails about this either.

Going into my XBox Live account, I found the following:

8/11/2011 Points added -- Points 260 1,830

8/11/2011 Points added -- Points 260 1,570

8/11/2011 Points added -- Points 260 1,310

8/11/2011 Points added -- Points 260 1,050

8/11/2011 Points added -- Points 260 790

Now, I don't want to knock free points -- this is 1300 worth of them, and that's over $10 in points. I did want to know where they came from, though, and to be totally sure I wasn't charged.

So I called XBox Live Support. Got a very kind and friendly girl on the phone -- and she totally was from the south! -- who checked her information.

As far as she can tell, the points were a promotion reward of some kind, which took about 6 weeks to process, but she couldn't tell where they came from. Her best guess is that it was from linking my PayPal account to XBox when they first announced that feature -- and I believe it was about 6 weeks ago, also.

I'm also currently taking part in the Bing Toolbar promotion (getting free points which I can cash in for prizes, XBox Live points being one of them) and XBox Live Rewards, but neither one of those would be 1300 points worth.

I went ahead while I was on the phone with her and de-linked the PayPal account to be on the safe side, but I'm still curious about the points.

As soon as I got off the phone I cashed 1200 points in right away to get that Vandal Hearts game I had been wanting. :D

I'm glad to have them, but I'm wondering if anyone else got any 'free' points recently and if they can confirm where these came form. :)

Hmmm I got the Bing points. I think it was 200 MSP on the Xbox rewards site to use Bing, and then I some free Bing points (like 250) and then I did the goofy little things to get another 250 and used the points to get 400 more MSP!

So far one the rewards site I've gotten 890 MSP. They come in little bits every month though, and many from buying stuff. I've never gotten a bunch all at once like you did. Pretty cool!

microsoft rewards, i got about 1200 a few weeks agon and it took me a while to figure out where the hell they came from, then I rememberd signing up for the rewards thing.

That makes sence. I joined the XBox Live Rewards thing a few weeks after it was announced here, and if it takes about 6-8 weeks to process, that would explain why you got yours first.

Totally a nice bonus though!

Moycon, your experience is similar to mine. I signed up for the Bing Toolbar also and click on the little offers when they renew. I've allready cashed in 500 Bing points for 400 MS Points, and I've gotten 300 MS points from doing stuff with XBox Live rewards.

Written August 12, 2011:

Last night there was a glitch in the matrix, and thousands of free Microsoft Points were awarded to a select number of users.

Those who noticed the extra points were able to go on a spending spree in the Xbox Marketplace.

Lucky!!

So it was a glitch? Aug 12 is when I called XBox Live support about this also, so aperently word hadn't passed to their reps yet.

Very nice bonus, in any event -- I got 1300 points as I said and I spent 1200 of them on Sat picking up Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgement (a game I note you allready have). I still have 100 left, they can take it out if they want.

Decent game. I don't think it's as good as the original, but a solid game for sure.

I need to play through again to get 100% achievements. I plan on finishing up Arcania 4 and then perhaps I'll return to VH for another go!!

Congrats on the free game!!

Yeah, I really enjoy both Vandal Hearts 1 and 2 (2 was even better) and had been wanting to check this out. If you like this, you should check out the new Might and Magic game. It's a lot of fun also.

The article is interesting (I couldn't read it at work) but when I called that night, they didn't know where it came from. I thought it might be a mistake, so I got the game that night. That left 100 points from the 'mistake' but they didn't take it from me. Of course, I have 70 points left now anyway. :P
