Cynicaster
I can't decide which games to play most of the time. Cosmic Avenger really pisses me off most of the time but I want to break 5 digits on it. Usually if I make it to the water, that part is a cake walk but this time I died in it. The game is quit hard. I remember it from TGI. Yeah, it's hard to pick one to work on; I have to keep telling myself I have 2 weeks. I never played Cosmic Avenger until it popped up here last season (I think it was last season). It's one of those games that I can't for the life of me figure out how anybody would willingly subject themselves to; I find it almost unplayable. My sister has it in her Colecovision collection so I'm guessing it holds nostalgic value for those who grew up with CV (I was an Atari only kid back then, never even touched a CV until last year). I haven't even fired New Rally X and Space Fury up yet. I have only checked the settings in the game so when I finally get around to them I know everything is ready to rock. I've put all of the ROMs in one folder so that my MAME is only picking up the games in this tourney. That way I don't get sidetracked when I fire up the MAME. For me that is easy to do. Well here comes Turkey Day! If I am lucky, I can squeeze in another game or two before dinner. B I run the free Mala front end on my cabinet and it lets me make custom game lists. I always make one for these tournaments for quick access. I'm Canadian but I work in the US so I'm taking full advantage of turkey day.
Cynicaster
Gorf - 20,220 Ms. Pac-Man - 130,170 Qix - 81,642 Solar Fox - 128,360 In Gorf I didn't realize until after I got this score that you can move your ship up and down. Oops. Never played the Turbo Ms. Pac-Man but it's pretty fun. The faster pace kind of reminds me of the Exidy maze games or Pac-Man Championship Edition DX on PS3. That's a new personal best on Qix, topping the 67k and change I got the last time it popped up in the HSC. Never played Solar Fox before aside from a few quick tries when I was looking for obscure games to suggest for this tourney. Great game. I was in the zone on this run for sure. Just before clearing the 10th level I hit 70k which gets you a free ship, then I got another free ship for clearing the level. The extra 2 lives allowed me to more than double my previous high score. Here are some things I figured out: - I play on "expert" where the default speed is fast and you press the button to slow down. I think "expert" is a misnomer personally, I think it's probably just personal preference and not really a reflection of skill level. - On the first board I clear all fuzors except for 3 or 4 and then point scrub a bit. I hold down the slow-down button and stay near the center of the screen and pick off missiles for 300 points each (I think that's what they're worth). It eventually gets to a point where the missiles are too numerous and fast to survive, so that is when I grab the last few fuzors and clear the level. You should be able to get between 8000-10000 points on the first level without too much trouble using this method, as opposed to the paltry ~2000 you'll get if you just go ahead and clear the level quickly. In theory I think the sky is the limit on how much you can squeeze from the first board but it's very frustrating to spend 5 minutes on it then die (which will happen most of the time because it gets pretty insane). Plus, let's face it, point scrubbing is boring as fuck (not to mention, kind of douchey ). - Shoot the little vortex things as soon as you can. There is enough crap going on without those in your way. - Shooting the cannons on the edges of the screen is essential. If you shoot them when they're red they will be disabled momentarily but don't get too excited because a disabled red cannon can still blow you out of the sky if you fly in front of it at too close a range. - Watch the cannons at all times and look for when one or more of them turns yellow. Shooting or running over a yellow cannon gets you 200 points and fully disables it for a short time (i.e. it can't shoot while down). Having a few seconds of just 3 cannons rather than 4 greatly simplifies the gameplay and lets you clean up the board a bit. You can shoot or run over the yellow cannons head-on, but the lowest risk way of approaching them is to skim along the edge of the screen perpendicular to the cannon's fire and take them out. That blue blob thing that comes on the screen from time to time seems to be worth 200, 400, 600, or 800 points and I can't seem to figure out what determines its value. I thought it might have to do with how close it is to the edge of the screen or what direction you hit it from, but I'm not really seeing a pattern. If anybody figures it out, please share. Once the guys on the side start shooting more than 1 shot at a time I can't hang. I have been playing this one today a good bit. I even did a 7 ship run just to see what I was up against. I finished it with 330k. It loops somewhere and goes back to the 1st board. You can just run over the fuzors once again. Granted the side ships are faster but it was a nice change of pace. Cynicaster
Space Fury (aka Shitty Asteroids) - 25,050 This game is ridiculously hard. I played probably 25 credits and the longest game might have been 3 minutes.

Barra
Ms Pacman - 32780 My first and maybe last go at this game. Actually did pretty well considering Im not a fan of these games and have hardly ever played them! Solar Fox - 39130 Just had a few games of this, and now have read BB's comment about shooting the Fuzors Made it to round 10. Really need to make use of the gun but never think to shoot when zooming around. Edited November 25, 2011 by Barra

patbb
Galaga - 553370 Recording attached for your viewing pleasure, the last ~100k is pretty much done on a single ship, so some awsome dodging moves had to be pulled out! (Ill say anything to get people to watch my gameplay) Recorded using WolfMAME 0.106 Galaga-553370-Barra.zip Now onto the other games Thanks for sharing your INP. VectorGamer
Don't overdo the movement. This reminds me of Mine Storm on Vectrex, where the ship accelerates and moves so quickly it's not worth it to keep doing it. I watched a guy play Space Fury who routinely scores in the 50s. He just sits in the middle and thrusts upwards every now and then to get out of the away of fireballs and cruisers.

Barra
Nice one Cynicaster!! As for Space Fury, Richie Knucklez recently broke the long-standing arcade WR (241k) and I remember watching some of his live streams, he hardly ever moved from the middle, trying to put an emphasis on shooting the fireballs etc.

bigbee99
My newest exploitations Cosmic Avenger 14600 Gorf 25930 New Rally X 210250 Personal best for Cosmic Avenger. Made it past the water and maybe 1/2 way through the next "level." Gorf is kinda fun. Does anyone else get slowdowns on the Galaxian level? It's pretty bad for me sometimes. I never played this in the arcades. Just wondering if it's the ROM I picked up or if that's the way it plays. I'm 95% sure it's not my PC. 1.80 GHz with 7 GB RAM should have no trouble with it New Rally X gets frustrating not knowing the map. I almost caught M.A.M.E.Offender. My best advice is to never double back. Just loop around to pick up something you missed. And go for the flag that's flashing on the minimap for 2x points. I need to put some more time on Bosco. You guys are leaving me in the dust! B

In Asteroids you can fly off the edge of the screen to escape a sticky situation but in this game the enemies have no "inertia" whatsoever; you fly off one end of the screen and end up on the other and the enemies turn around on a dime and head right at you. Quite maddening. The collision detection isn't very forgiving either. Even if you have the weapon with the 3 shots and shoot at the fireballs, if you don't hit the target dead-nuts it's still going to get you. It blows my mind that somebody can score over 240k on this game...
