Genesis Knockout HSC Round 3 - Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure

Recommended Posts

This season, the Genesis HSC is going to participate in the AA-wide knockout competition. See the rules here:

http://www.atariage....t-announcement/

If you get knocked out, you can still compete in the Genesis HSC, but your score will not count towards the knockout tournament. So I'll be posting 2 sets of results for each round.

The second round game, as picked by me, is going to be Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure.

If you don't have a copy of this game, it is available on the Wii Virtual Console.

Title: Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure

It would be worth the trouble. Great game. If you don't like the controls, you can change the button mappings in the options screen. Chris
It's funny how polarizing the opinions are on this game. I'm in the "It's great!" crowd, but I run into a lot of people that can't stand it one bit.

My initial reaction to it was pretty negatve, but I had to keep playing it because I was reviewing it for my website, and the more I played it, the more I liked it. Now I like it a lot. That's why I picked it for this round. So for anyone that doesn't like it, I can only say that you should keep playing. The controls and physics take some getting used to, but once you do, I find the experience to be quite rewarding.

Also, something to throw out there, anyone that has the ability to anyway, check out the Sega CD version. The new soundtrack added makes a pretty big difference in my opinion. It's very well done. :)

That's actually the version that I reviewed. Found it in a thrift store CIB for $3. Not bad.

Yeah, surprisingly it's one of the cheapest Sega CD games you can find, despite its quality. I think you can get CIB copies on eBay for about five bucks after shipping, heh. Crazy.

Jump up them quickly before they they a chance to break. That part got me for awhile before I figured out what to do.

I got stuck at the part where the branches break off.

I got up there 2 times, i gave up on my last life.

I always loved this game - I owned the Sega CD version first, then after I foolishly got rid of my Sega stuff , I rebought it for Genesis. I never see it in the wild for Sega CD.

The only difference from what I remember is the CD version has a really deep surround mix and better audio all around, plus some brief load times before bosses.

Not sure if I'll find time to hook up the Genny and compete in this HSC or not.

It controls best with a Genesis 6-button pad since the top 3 buttons are mapped to each of the 3 weapons - stones, boomerangs, and explodey thing.

I think the SegaCD version has some additional content.

Thanks VERY much for the tip about the 6-button controller. That sounds a lot more convenient than using the start button.

So as someone in the "not a big fan of this game" camp, this contest made me at least appreciate it a little more. No offense to the game chosen, just not a big fan of this type of game.

My first and probably only attempt: 230,390

I remember playing this one weekend during my childhood. I was stuck on this one level since the guy just stood there and wouldn't do anything. This didn't happen during my playthrough on Gens though, guess it was just a glitch in the cart back then.

Extra lives were much more abundant than I remembered them, and I was surprised to get as far as I did on one credit. I managed to get farther than where I glitched out so many years ago...only to die on that level.

I kept pressing the jump button, but my controller isn't great for playing this game.

Looking forward to the next round.

This round ends today. Zylon is going to be knocked out since he apparently doesn't care for this game. swlovinist, assuming that you don't submit a score that's higher than mine, you'll be picking the next game, so start thinking about it now.
