Assassins Creed 3 revealed

info blowout-

- Settings will include Boston, New York and a large countryside. The countryside will be the setting of about 1/3 of the game, and will be the location of many events during the game. The countryside will be about 1.5 times as big as Rome in Brotherhood.

- The protagonist will fight on the American side, with primary allies being George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Charles Lee. However, this does not mean that the Americans are the good guys and the British are the bad guys. Templars are everywhere.

- There will be seasons in the game, meaning that the sun will shine during summer and the landscape will be covered in snow during winter. This is the best new feature in Assassin’s Creed 3 as far as I’m concerned.

- Fighting and stealth will be completely re-innovated, with Connor being compared to a “predator”. The player will be able to climb trees and other natural elements, and dual-wielding weapons such as a dagger and a mohawk is now also an option.

- Animals will be present in the woods, like deer and bears. The player will be able to kill them and pelt their skins, to sell them later with the reformed economic system of the game.

I'm intrigued but I have my concerns about the tree idea.

While on paper it sounds like an awesome idea and a good North American landscape answer to the previous games' narrow winding streets and tall buildings, I don't know how they intend to pull that off. Are the tree branches going to be randomly generated as you move around? If so does that mean going back to the same tree means its branches will be different each time? And also does that mean a lot of times there simply won't be a branch available when you are leaping from tree to tree?

Or, will they map out all the trees and have intended paths for you to follow?

Either way I would guess that is going to require some major processor power in the game engine.

It's a cool idea, a setting rarely seen in games, a nice logical progression of the Assassin's Creed story, but I just don't know how they are going to pull some of this off.

Well I saw the first tree footage yesterday from the E3 Ubisoft press conference. Looks like trees will be intentionally mapped out as routes for Connor to take. This must be an insane amount of computations for the processor to make, surely. I'm no expert on console graphics and computational power but it would seem to me that if they intend to figure out each and every branch that Connor can take as a route to his objective there's a heck of a lot of ... what are they called? splines? ... anyway a heck of a lot of individual traces that the console is going to need to keep track of.

I mean it's one thing to detail a bunch of buildings with roofs and ledges but at least those are just big graphical blocks, tree branches must be more computationally taxing, aren't they?

Regardless I sat and watched the footage with my mouth open. This is amazing looking and I am seriously stoked to get this game (depending on reviews).

That sea battle stuff was sure unexpected. I'm wondering what the story connection is to the previous games. Is Connor the ancestor of Desmond, or do they have somebody else stuck in the animus? Same with the lady from the PSVita game.

the popularity of this series honestly surprises me. i never would have thought that a historically based series like this would sell millions of copies, let alone an entire franchise and merchandise.

Bringing back this old thread because it seems to be the only one dedicated to AC3.

I played this on X360

This game was a horrible mess. The problems with missing exposition ranged from simple things like not explaining why you would need to hunt anything to core gameplay elements like not demo'ing the fact that you can disarm enemies and chain attacks. I know I didn't remember how to chain attacks from 2 years ago when I played the last game in this series, and I didn't figure it out again in this one until about Sequence 9 or 10. Then there was a bunch of other missing things that would have made the experience better like the animus telling you that you just met Daniel Boone when you didn't - why is he important? I'm not sure. I think it has something to do with "frontiersmen," but I just played the whole game and discovered no compelling reason to interact with those guys.

Unexplained game mechanics and loosely tied together sub-plots aside - the game is simply full of bugs. The first few sequences were especially plagued by bugs where Hatham would randomly jump straight into the air 60 feet and come crashing down. Or he would spawn for a chase intending to be on horseback with no horse - auto fail. Most of the main sequences just seemed like they weren't very well planned out:

Escape the massacre just to have to fight every guard in Boston before even learning about how to lower notoriety. Oh btw, this is where it would have been nice to know how to disarm.

Throwing tea into the bay? When will this sequence end? You'll have to fail it 3 times to find out. For me, I finally did it by throwing crates wherever and noticed that one of the guys I was trying to protect hit a bug and wasn't fighting or being fought anymore. Also, why was Paul Revere suddenly there - more lack of easy to provide explanation to make this a better experience.

One terrible moment was when they taught you how to command the Patriots by waiting until the enemy troop line was about to fire. That was great except if you tried to command that way, you lost. It took me 4 or 5 failed attempts to realize that the instructions should have been "ride around like an idot giving the fire command as quickly as you can." But that's ok - its great when games give you instructions that cause you to fail. That's seems right.

I don't know about you, but I had no idea how to manage the "Homestead." The game showed you one time that you could send a wagon to sell wood and then left you alone forever. I had to look online to even realize that the homestead missions were available outside of the homestead area. What a pain in the arse. I never was able to figure out how to level up any of those craftsmen, and I don't even really know why that would matter.

In terms of just generally being not fun - they managed somehow to make exploring the towns and climbing the buildings a serious chore. I loved exploring Rome and Florence etc, but there didn't really seem to be a point in this one. I managed to explore Boston and recruit the Assassins there, but I didn't really even utilize the Assassin's after that - shame on me I guess, but it wasn't a reward that enhanced my gameplay.

Basically, I would score this game a 1 out of 5. A bunch of bugs push it down from a 2 to a 1. I'm guessing there is some fun to be had, but it is a huge disappointment from the previous games in the series, and the decision to let you fend for yourself on some of the critical gameplay elements and homestead building features just meant that I didn't get to enjoy them. If you can't be bothered to show me what is fun about your game then it is your fault if I miss it. I'm not even sure what I missed out on was even that great.
