anyone know how to remove the tmss from Genesis

Recommended Posts

The genesis community is the hardest to find any descent information out. I found out how to overclock but no one really says how fast you can go or do you have to have the halt switch. anyways my question is, is there anyway to remove the tmss on the genesis? Can i program a new eprom? and do you have to put the halt switch in?

Not really, Sega-16 practically has a treasure trove of technical info on their forums. Anyway, I haven't done an overclock mod yet but from what I've seen you don't really need it. The overclock speed usually depends on what CPU your Genesis has, but I'd say 10 MHz is a good bet since that speed tends to play nice with certain Genesis consoles and is more stable than a 12 MHz clock.

As for removing the TMSS screen, I know it's been done on the Genesis 2 and 3 (I had my Genesis 2 modded with an internal switch to enable/disable TMSS), but I'm not sure the model 1. I'm pretty sure it's possible though.

The very earliest Genesis's lacked the message, but it was added pretty quickly. If you have a non-tmss genesis, you know right away you have one of the best boards with good sound. Some of the tmss genesis model Is have the same sound, but not all.

Removing TMSS is probably possible, but pointless. Just wait 3 seconds.

You can't remove it. It's a ROM burned into the chipset. Note that in my experience, pre-TMSS Genesis (N.A.) consoles are quite rare. They added it even before removing the rear "modem" port! If you know what to look for (which I don't right now), you can identify the board version from looking inside the cartridge port.

Really, there are very few reasons to need one. Just a few older 3rd party games, and to avoid the 2 second delay when using one as a development machine.

However, there were hints from the big lawsuit that one of Sega'a hardware guys apparently thought there was a simple hardware-only solution that would bypass it. So maybe it is possible, but nobody knows how.

I've looked all over sega-16 i guess I just haven't dug deep enough. As for the tmss I don't mind the wait. I was just trying to see if it had anythin to do with the region mod. Because I read that some of the games would boot up differently depending on which region it was in i.e. Bare Knuckles/Streets of Rage but when I tried it it said not playable in this region. I tried the overclock but it didn't seem to work. I started with a 10 mhz chip. Maybe I'll try a little lower, but then it doesn't really seem worth it. Just for an extra MHZ. But with the tmss you're saying it's in the rom couldn't you just burn a non-tmss bios and replace the rom? I'll just probably leave it alone.
