The explosion that I finally designed is sort of an electric blast, that is followed by a shower of sparks. I think it came out rather cool, and so I thought I'd share it with you. Below I've included the ASCII representation of the frame animation sequence. Feel free to use it in your own games. Attribution is appreciated, but not required. I'm not going to give away any more of the game, so if you want to know to which part of the game it belongs, or who's the subject of the explosion, you'll have to play the game once it's released soon. (Attention Beta Testers: remember that you're sworn to secrecy!) Also, I've included a screen test movie of the explosion. All actors have been removed from the scene so as not to give anything away.
