How have you fared with EPROM programming? I'm about to go there and need current advice. Which programmer did you acquire?

I'm using a very cheap Chinese programmer TOP853 (search on ebay). It works fine and supports lots of EPROMs but I didn't manage to install the USB driver under 64 bit Windows, so it's running on an old XP installation. I think their latest models have 64 bit drivers.

Thanks! That's actually the first one that popped up when I searched on Amazon. I hope to get reports on one or two other programmers— I'm not in a hurry—yet. But, you know how that goes: I'll suddenly get the bug and want it that day!

That's the problem I had with an old parallel Chipmax programmer. It worked just great under 32-bit OS'es with a parallel port, but then stopped working under Vista/7/8 or any 64 bit OS. I wound up getting a BK Precision 844USB programmer (rebadged Elnec SmartProg2) when I was in the heyday of doing all this cartridge stuff, and it has worked really well.

 

I did try some of the eBay ones from China... actually two of them; a Willem clone and one of those Top ones, and they gave me so many headaches with intermittent operation, crappy documentation, broken software, etc, so I broke down and got the 844USB for my own sanity.

I echo John's comments. I have a Wellon (Chinese) programmer that I got mostly for IC testing. I cannot get the 64 bit software to install so I too use it (if you can call it that) on an XT set-up. The documentation reads like pigeon English as does the support forum. I never used it to burn anything as I have an old ISA programmer but the testing functions are sketchy at best. In fact the forum mods can't even tell which IC's are testable and which ones are above it's resources. Some vector files are mislabeled etc. I'd stay away from Wellon...

- wow, that 844USB is pricey! It looks like if I ever get into this I will be taking the knock-off avenue .

I've been using this one for a while now - has fairly good support, works on 32 and 64 bit Windows, relatively cheap, and has been reliable for me.

And fixed.. simple transistor replacement
