FlashBack Quest for Identity: SNES or Genesis? Battery okay?

Recommended Posts

I am thinking of picking up FlashBack: The Quest for Identity and I have both a SNES and a Sega Genesis (I don't have Sega CD).

I've heard the graphics are slightly better on SNES (and one would assume the sound is better) but that the control scheme on the SNES pad is not the best. I'm also not a fan of Nintendo censoring the game.

My bigger priority is the internal battery, I want to be able to save my progress and since this title is twenty years old I'm worried the life of those cartridge batteries is getting close to their end.

So which version would you folks recommend I get?

You want the Sega CD version, dude.

Trust me.

It is by and large the best version. Even better than the Amiga one! :3

It's password based. Go Go Go!

Of the cart ones (if you have no Sega CD), the Genesis one is better still, IMO. I grew up playing the SNES one.

but then I got the genesis one and was like damn I wish I had this one instead.

Then I bought the Sega CD one and was like !_!

(I'm a Flashback obsessor. I have all of the versions available)

All versions of Flashback use a password system. If I remember correctly, the passwords are small though. Like five or six characters.

And basically what Arkhan said--The Sega CD game is by far the best version.. if only for the fact that it was awesome, constant in-game music (the only version to do so).

On the Genesis, it used simple passwords, not a battery.

So the Genesis controller is okay for all the commands and controls? If so it looks like I have a winner.

My only beef with the password solution is they are not "granular" enough for me. See, back in the day I got as far as Level 2 where there are half a dozen terminals with jobs for me to perform. One of the final jobs is really hard and I never got past it. The task where you have to get to the reactor before the timer runs out and there's a lot of jumping and platforming.

Anyway, I usually load Level 3 by using a password which takes me past that part of the game and on with the adventure, but I feel bad because it means I never really finished that section. It would have been nice if there was a password to get me directly to that specific job from the terminal and more passwords to get to various other places in the game, not big chapter leaps.

Anyway, I'll look for the Genesis version.

And sorry Arkhan but I don't have room in my cabinet for a Sega CD, alas.

How's the 3DO version? I would expect that it's pretty good, but I haven't loaded it up, and I'm no obsessor so I couldn't really compare it.

It's good. Just like all the other versions, with the sharpest looking of the newer pre-rendered FMV sequences. It lacks the constant in-game music of the Sega CD one though. If it had it, it would be the best version, hands down.

What if you get the Sega CD that mounts under the sega, instead of on the side? :)

The 3DO version is OK. I guess. I don't like the 3DO much though, so I boxed that thing up and threw it on a shelf a long time ago. One of the lamest things I ever bought.

thanks to this thread and links provided, i now know that Another World (aka Out of This World) and Flashback both have sequels, and that a third Flashback was in development and then cancelled. neat.

to add to this thread, i own the Genesis version and played the SNES version. i prefer Genny's controls, and its comic book.

EDIT: just scored me a complete copy of Fade To Black (Flashback 2) for PSX for under $5.00 !

Am I the only one that thinks Fade to Black is garbage?

I wanted to like it, but I think I picked it up 10 years too late. At it's time it was probably really good.

Shit.. I picked it up just two or three years late, and even then it was already dated.

Alrighty what do you experts think? Can I fit a Sega CD in there? According to the online specs the CD is 16" wide, there's only 15" unless I remove my Atari cart binders (which is fine, I have a Harmony now anyway). And from the videos I've seen the CD lid doesn't open too high so I doubt it will bump against the top shelf. My big concern is the door barely slides shut given the genesis controller cord is right up against it. Does the Sega CD add any depth? If it's even a fraction of an inch I won't be able to close the thing.

Oh and back to FlashBack, if the Genesis one uses passwords only, why are there save stations in the game? Is that just a throwback to its PC roots?

I wouldn't call it garbage (I've played part way through the DOS version) but it was no Flashback, that's for sure.

Yeah, I think "garbage" was a bit strong of a word for what I meant. I guess it's not awful standing on its own, but you put it best--it's certainly no Flashback.

The binders would have to move, but the height and depth should be good I think.

I think the model 2 will fit. It will be tight, but it should fit.

A model 1 Sega CD will definitely fit.

I have the Mac version and the Genesis version. I never looked into the SegaCD port because I didn't like the look of the cinemas. I thought the original filled-polygon cinemas were pretty badass and thought the SegaCD version's CG renderings looked like a downgrade.

Hmmmmm I might go for Ax's Model 2 Sega CD then.

One more question, this review mentions "model [1] was replaced with a lightweight version that rode sidesaddle with the Genesis and had a pop-top lid. Compared to the first Sega CD, it felt flimsy and cheap. The newer model is also known to have problems running certain games"

I can't find any lists of what games work and what don't, anyone know?
