+rdemming
Here a list of "STE enhanced" games on Atari Mania. However I doubt that many of them do more than just use the enhanced color palette. From head: WoD & Lethal Access: ADMA, BLIT, (EPAL?,HWS?) Stone Age: ADMA, (EPAL?) Stardust and Substation is STE only. Robert
macgoo
Stardust is probably the only STE only game worth the price of a blank disk really. Unfortunately Super Stardust (Amiga 1200/4000) and Stardust 96 (PC) are superior games to the original Amiga 500/STE release of Stardust so I don't really play them. Some guy wrote a monochrome (not in hires mode, just greyscale graphics) demo of Street Fighter 2 though didn't they? Project is abandoned but it is interesting. +rdemming
Stardust is probably the only STE only game worth the price of a blank disk really. In my opinion, Obsession is also worth its (3) disk space. Also Zero-5 is an STE only game I would recommend to check out. Robert

macgoo
I wonder what Shadow of the Beast would be like if it was written from scratch for an STE only. Wow. I just have to strongly disagree with this. While underutilized, there are still far more than -1- single game that is worth the price of a floppy disk!! If a person couldn't find more than -1- game (other than Stardust) to like from that list, then they just don't like games, in my humble opinion. Just sayin'.... Well it was all IMO and based on games written exclusively for the STE (ST enhanced games will never utilise the full power of the STE for the same reason most Amiga games were rubbish because they shared ST 68k source code) Of the 3 I knew of (SD, Obsession, Zero 5) I can't stand polygon game prior to Playstation 1/66mhz 486PC because they don't look nice. The only exception for me I guess is Zarch on an Archimedes computer (especially the 12mhz A3010/3020 etc) I'm not a big fan of pinball games or real pinball at all to be honest. I kind of expect 1985/86 arcade game levels of graphics and sound from both the STE and Amiga, anything below that means people were not making the effort. Just look at R-Type 2 on a plain STFM and see what Arc Developments managed with no blitter/scrolling hardware in just 8mhz. Like I said it was just my personal view of the handful of games which were STE only, other people may judge games less harshly sure
ParanoidLittleMan
Stardust is probably the only STE only game worth the price of a blank disk really. ... Hmmm... This is year 2012. I bought 4GB CF card for 10 Euros. There is still 'some' space for even not top-notch games. (+ some other disks lay around by me, more-less filled). But even if you don't have some hard disk with your Atari, you can keep game base on some PC, MAC in image formats, and when want to play something outwrite it onto floppi(es). This is even more reliable than storage on floppies. Finally, you can DL 98% of quality stuff anytime . +Sauron
Not sure why it's always left off of the list, but Fire & Ice was STE enhanced also.
ParanoidLittleMan
Right, Fire and ice is too. Why left ? It is always very hard to make list from so many titles. ParanoidLittleMan
Thanx Christos. Good to have some other source than Gamebase ST. Gamebase ST: it is really useful compilaton, project. Unfortunately there is a lot of errors, bad infos. They should listen better to user feedback and update it - and I know that there was a lot of error reports. It seems that STE compat/enhanc. related infos are the worst part. Over 20% of data is false. There are some really pathetic errors: like game from 1985 marked as STE only

Considering what ST games work on STE: making some accurate list would take too much time. I say that over 90% of originals and well made cracks will work on STE with TOS 1.06/1.62 . On Mega STE (TOS 2.05/2.06) and STEs with that TOS likely under 80% . With little help - by installing TOS 1.04 in high RAM ratio will go over 99% in both cases. And with simple fixing of bugs in few games ratio will be 100% .A As said already, STE is very compatible with ST.
macgoo
EPAL = hardly an improvement IMO. So the colours will be more or less identical unless it is a 16 greyscale game and there are still only 16 colours anyway so the graphics would look the same. I suppose a game that only has EPAL next to it at least is compatible.
ParanoidLittleMan
EPAL benefit is best visible in gradients - horizon for example. Check some games like Fire and Ice with Hatari set to ST and then to STE. EPAL self is of course compatible, as all others are too. If no bugs in code and TOS version is not problem. But I gave one case where EPAL combined with TOS version can make problems. All real incompatibilities (3 cases listed) are because code bugs - writing in HW scroll register because palette writing code having too much cycles. See HW reg adresses, and will understand. Testing on ST indicates not any errors, because overshot writes 'in empty' .
macgoo
Was STOS ever updated to use DMA samples/scroll registers/4096 colours/hardware blitter at all? I wrote some very nice routines in STOS that just needed a little bit more help (or a 16mhz 68000 CPU) like Konami style shootem up full screen transparent parallax playfields that turned out a lot better than I thought they would at the time. I have a 1040STE but it's probably the least used machine of all the STs I own, my favourite was my Mega STE with 16mhz CPU but had to sell it as it started to get 'stuck' in mono mode even if you connected an SC1224 monitor. ParanoidLittleMan
Not sure about STOS updates for STE. Likely not - it was not updated for later TOS versions, at least not officailly. I digged yesterday little in compilations at AM. Found some missing STX images (like SWIV) - but they won't include compilation based images in main base, even if they are exaclty same os original release Anyway, meanwhile I saw 2 cases where stays: not STE c. So, I checked it, expecting that it will be not exactly true ... Kenny Dalglish Soccer Manager (some football compil.): it works on STE under TOS 1.04 . Total Eclipse (Virtual Worlds by Domark) : actually, that version will crash even on ST with TOS 1.04. With TOS 1.02 works, on STEs too. The reason is very stoopid bug in launcher (what is slightly modded original one, for menu). The real reason is of course lack of careful testing. This, and some other examples can explain why AM dislikes compilations (other reason may be that sometimes title pic missing, or other cutting. )

And of course you should use STOS Fixer for all your compiled programs...

Really not working: Hyperforce - overshot in palette writing loop Grand Monster Slam - overshot in palette writing loop Nightdown - writing to Screen pointer does nothing on ST, on STE bus error. Total 3 games found so far - not solveable by changing TOS vers., RAM setting or similar. I made fixed versions of them, and it means changing only couple bytes. In case of Grand Monster Slam it is done even with STX img. As TOS version caused problem good example is Defender of the Crown: code is not ready for enhanced palette of STE, handled via XBIOS calls. If run under TOS 1.04 on STE it works fine. How to use TOS 1.04 on STE ? See on Floppy Image Runner site. Making complete list of originals not working on regular STE with TOS 1.06/1.62 would take too much time. I guess that over 90% works. TOS 2.05/2.06 (Mega STE) : I guess that success rate is under 80%. What helps in case of problem: Try another crack. Try running from AUTO folder. Use specialised SW for setting machine to act as having only 512KB (or 1MB) RAM. Install TOS 1.04 in RAM.
