I thought PAL would have a harder time with the bubblegum pink but it did pretty well!

Trying to stick with making NTSC palettes work...here is a colorful eye.

Original has 34,736 colors:

Output is 87 colors:

It still makes me smile thinking of how much this would have completely flipped our lids in the 80s. The hardware was capable, we just didn't know it yet!

Do they have so many vibrant colors?

Almost two years ago there was a webmeeting organized by AtariOnline.pl. At the meeting, I shared my experience of working with the RastaConverter application. I showed how to get started with the program and provided some examples of my failed and successful conversions. We also were trying to convert one photo during the meeting.

I know that most of you are very familiar with RastaConverter because your conversions are really good. But maybe some of you would like to start your adventure with RastaConverter. That's why I decided to post a link to the recording of the meeting here. The whole discussion is in Polish, but guys from AtariOnline.pl added Polish subtitles generated by AI. Therefore you can turn on the on the fly translation into English or other language directly in Youtube player. The translation is not perfect, but it should be enough to get the point.

The actual presentation of RastaConverter starts at about 21st minute.

In addition, I am attaching the presentation I showed during the meeting. I have also prepared an English version.

I know it's been a month or two since my last post, promising more soon, but with no luck getting acceptable results in conversion attempts, I needed to step away until I got my Rasta mojo back, as well as life delaying things. But here are a few now.

This first one is actually a re-do of a conversion I did several odd years ago, IIRC, I titled it Journey's End. It was a familiar image but at the time I didn't recall that it's cover art for one of the many reprints of Isaac Asimov's Foundation books.

All are book cover or other art related to the Foundation series of books. These particular ones and a few more I hope to convert are 70's/80's era art from paperback reprints of the era.

Very quick image conversion (lost track of the evaluations or norm distance)

I tried a version with dithering and then decided I liked this one. I deliberately left the background in. (Might revisit and try dither and non dither versions with a blank background.

I used a mask also, (I always use masks these days for my conversions TBH.

Love this image. Colours are so vivid. :) Oh to have this image in a game as a series setting the scene in a story intro, backed with some cool atmospheric music and (if in letter box format), space for some story text. Good job.

This is an impressionistic art piece from paperback edition reprints of Foundation books in the 60/70's era I believe. There are distinctly different styles throughout the decades of Asimov's Foundation cover and other art. It's quite interesting to see how it evolved from the first edition hardback cover sleeves or later paperback releases and reprints, and collected works re-releases to modern day editions.

I read a lot of Asimov in high school, especially his short stories. I recall starting Foundation but got bored. I'll have to dig out those old Science Fiction Book Club copies and try again!

Over the last 5 years I read the entire I-Robot and Foundation series, and other works using my good old library card. I then just listened to the entire Foundation series this past year on Audible while doing electronics projects. I highly recommend the Audible versions, some great narrators and easy to multi-task while doing some other work or project. A classic series, a must for any bucket-list of novels. You don't want to end your life without having experienced the entire Foundation and I-Robot series.

Another NTSC palette (if people want I'll make a PAL version). This one the Atari struggles with the really delicate fleshtones in the original, but it still comes out looking great, just darker than the model. I modified the original slightly (taking edges of hands that were in the image out, so her face would be a focus). It's very close to the destination, but is still finding corrections even this far in. 30 colors due to the tight subject focus.

Following on from the Lost Party 2023 and the work pseudografx presented with the AI images conversion, I decided to do what another forum member has done and go full circle. That is to take the AI images and convert them via Rastaconverter. So Atari original (G2F) image converted with AI for PC and then that AI source image converted back to Atari by Rastaconverter. :)

See here: repAInt, iconic images recreated by AI

***

This is the original Atari artwork (G2F presumably(?)) from which the AI image in the YT video was generated, (hereafter known as Taxilady):

image.thumb.png.e02924f6d89ba0ec9536b655ac2854e7.png

I've taken a snapshot of the AI generated image taken the YT vid here and preprocessed it to make a source image for Rasta converter:

image.png.d5e690ee047688260b13da89d0102599.png

......

...then I've been running the PAL RastaC conversion.

Update:Still running it but it's coming out really well :)

image.thumb.png.fff752cccfd050f8ea45cff44b820a9d.png

Update: Here is the latest output XEX, (PAL pallette) from this evening where so far definition and colours are looking good, (where I am particularly pleased with the details on the taxi and those on her face):

(snapshot taken from Altirra with PAL high artifacting setting in place):

image.thumb.png.83411458cb760751e0e99fd552b48728.pngTaxiladysm1_08.xex

This may or may not be the case but given the original Atari G2F image was of course laid out in such a way for the Atari to display, because the AI image is based on it, it stands to reason this potentially provides an ideal source image for Rastaconverter to create a decent conversion.  Proper full circle stuff here. :)

I am gonna run others and see how they come out. Got the Prince of Persia one running and it's looking pretty good.

Just finished the runs of the following AI created source images taken from Pseudografx's video. Results aren't too bad :)

image.thumb.png.418415c4c1c3419820ac11edb7e9507f.png

First up:

The conversion of Prince of Persia's Atari spash screen

Original Atari spash screen which I believe is a Piccilo created image by Resoup for the A8 game (which is a great image in itself):

image.thumb.png.a169674005b8f8525e92efc327b173aa.png

The AI version image is taken and pre-processed to create the source image for the Rasta conversion:

The resulting Rastaconversion:

320*240, Altirra pallette

44 Unique colours

3.8 billion evals, 162 norm dist, 15000 sols, Mask used, No dither.

Hpos fixed with Sheddy's tool

*****

Next up:

The conversion of one of the strip poker Atari game screens, (honestly I've never played the game myself:razz:):

The original 4 colour Atari game screen:

image.thumb.png.460f14885939fb6613fb4df29f4fe4f0.png

The AI version image is taken and pre-processed to create the source image for the Rasta conversion

(the AI version being a slight improvement on the original 4 colour image... no disrespect to the original Artist of course ;)) :

image.jpeg.35f28dc86d1a71d1969f9d972ab81cb4.jpeg

The resulting Rastaconversion:

320*200, Altirra pallette

46 Unique colours

2.4 billion evals, 127 norm dist, 15000 sols, Mask used, No dither.

Hpos fixed and centered with Sheddy's tool

Filename: Beeblebrox_LauraAiversionsm1_17_fixed_centered.xex

(snapshot taken from Altirra with PAL high artifacting setting):

image.thumb.jpeg.15d2a5c8c59fbdba78ff443fa4bd2571.jpeg

Beeblebrox_LauraAiversionsm1_17_fixed_centered.xex

I am running the above one again (are you surprised?!;))  with dithering this time.

Quick update. Finished the dithered version of the previously posted image a few posts earlier.

Here it is:

320*200, Altirra pallette

54 Unique colours

7.4 billion evals, 133 norm dist, 15000 sols, Mask used, Floyd dither used

Hpos fixed and centered with Sheddy's tool

Filename: Beeblebrox_LauraAiversionsm2_16_fixed_centered.xex

A few nerdy observations ;) :

The definition on the lips has been lost in this conversion which is annoying.

However the line bridge between her eyes/brows and either side of the mouth worked themselves out of this version which I am happy about.

Plus the hair is better dithered.

Non dithered version                    dithered version:

    image.png.c8b87955c069907bd7ec29a5c9616a0b.png                        image.png.07cd2ab289a4f101f3340da7c06ba4bf.png

The dithered version does however have 8 more colours than the non dithered conversion. (wooo 8!! ;) )

This version has some line errors that Sheddy's tool couldn't get rid of.

I kinda like both the non dithered and dithered versions for different reasons.

(snapshot taken from Altirra with PAL high artifacting setting):

BTW Sheddy's tool did correct quite a few HPOS and again I highly recommend it be used for any conversions you make:
