I'm an experimental musician and I can do a lot better. This guy tried though, so I'll give him that. You don't learn by not trying.

There's a couple of ways this guy could have done this. First off, there's a tracker for the C64 called Cynthcart which is a freebie you can get off the net and run on a C64 or an emulator.

What I like to do, if I decide to make C64 music (which might be blasphemy to C64 fans), is to use virtual instruments that I downloaded for my digital audio workstation. I happen to have three that are emulations of the C64 sound chip and they all work fantastic. They're callled "Bleep", Unknown 64", and "basic 64". That way there. I can load as many instances of them as I want and basically have an orchestra of C64's all generating coreographed music!

Blacklight,

as an experimental musician you owe it to yourself to get a real C64 or an Electron SID Station; the phat sound of the subtractive analougoue synth cannot yet be duplicated via digital approximation; here's one example of many that cannot be reproduced well via emulation:

Nice! I love the sound of that! I'm planning on snagging a C64 from Ebay sometime in the next few months. Till then, I'm stuck with emulators and VST's.

I'll never forgive my dad for selling my C64 at a tag sale when I moved away to college. My beloved got taken away with my two milk crates full of games for it for $10. *sigh*. I KNEW I should have taken it with me!!!

I've seen that C64's are REALLY affordable on ebay now. I was looking at that "new" C64 that's being sold, but it kind of rubs me the wrong way a little bit. I can't explain why. AND it's missing the little symbol pictures that were on the front of the keys.

I would like to apologize to everyone who responded to or read my post. What I said was extremely antagonistic, conceited, and overall disrespectful. I had no right to say what I said, it was an assholish thing to say... it was very elitest, and I wish I could take it back.

Animan99, I apologize for being so negative to you, when all you were doing was sharing some music.

Austin, your thread was pretty much on point, and you listed some solid names in there. I was really happy to see you mention Breakbeat and to mention a few of the big names from the Industrys past... it's nice seeing someone know their stuff. My post was full of g*yness, I wish I could take it back... I really don't know why I go off on those elitest tangents sometimes... I wish I didn't.

Again fellas, my apologies... I am sorry for sounding like such a huge prick.

Here is another C64 example, its not dubstep, but cool anyway

I'm not sure why the video link won't show up in the quote... that was very, very cool... nice post! Neat little tune that guy put together, and it sounded pro as can be.

Speaking of electronic music, here is an interesting artist "Deadly Habit" and one of his songs. It's very interesting minimalist music

Hello chaps,

I'm a dubstep DJ/Producer. I think you're listening to the wrong dubstep.

This is closer to original dubstep than what you guys know as dubstep (which is affectionately known as 'brostep' to the dubstep community):

Phaeleh - Afterglow

Unquote - Cold Tenderness (Original Mix)

Nanobyte - Kalyke

To truly appreciate what dubstep is about it's worth checking these mixes out:

It's a genre that's almost become a characture of itself thanks to Skrillex, Rusko, Excision et al.

Looks like UK and US dubstep are completely different type of music.

Like this one is from UK Digital Mystikz

it sounds like a slow D&B / Jungle or was influenced by it.

In US they used a lot of clipped bass lines.

Dubstep was invented in Croydon and is essentially two-step garage with a dub vibe.

The heavier US/brostep style is a result of Rusko adding a bit more distortion to the mids then it being taken (in my opinion) too far to the noisy mainstream mess it has become. There's very little focus on the sub-bass.

The original/UK style was made for large soundsystems and to push the equipment and has quite a dark vibe.

I think the main difference is that brostep tries to fill space, original dubstep tries to explore it.

This will clear it up for everyone :)
