Finally got my Sega CD up and running! Game suggestions?

I'm excited about the Sega CD I bought recently! Got it in a lot with 3 (Model 2) Sega Genesis for 40 bucks, AS-IS. Turned out everything was in working condition :D. Anyway I finally bought a power outlet for it and I'm ready to play some games! Any suggestions that are exclusive to the Sega CD?

This link has the best list http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?21172-Best-non-fmv-sega-cd-games.

Any non fmv game is usually good (there are a few non fmv stinkers out there). Quite a few are the same as the Genesis version with added graphic effects, better music and sound effects, some don't have a Genesis version.

I think that all Sega CD fmv games suck.

Yeah, but everyone (with a Sega CD) should play "Sewer Shark" once. Same for "Night Trap." For FMV Games, "Tomcat Alley" isn't horrific.

DOMnation, make sure you check out "Silpheed", "Batman Returns" and "Jurassic Park." I'm also a fan of the Core games, "AH3-Thunderstrike," & "Soul Star." And "Sonic CD" of course. "Terminator" is also worth checking out.

Sega CD has some interesting games. I agree with LynxVGL's choices. I'm not a fan of RPGs so I won't recommend any of those. Here are some thoughts on the games I can think of right now:

Silpheed - it plays like galaxians a little bit, but has superimposed 3D backgrounds/asteroids/moons. The game is fun and very difficult - you have to learn it, and pick the right combinations of weapons. Great early use of CD tech.

Robo Aleste - by Compile, a sequel to Genesis game MUSHA. It's beautiful, challenging, fun, and awesome. And its difficult - however I beat the game so you should be able to as well, given practice.

Batman Returns - this is why I purchased the Sega CD, it was just so awesome - the driving levels and scaling are suberb. And difficult .. see the pattern here with Sega CD games? :)

Jurassic Park - point-n-click first-person perspective adventure, an experimental type of game at the time and I feel it worked well. The way the screen goes dark when you die , yet you continue to hear your death, used to freak me out.

Terminator CD - this is 1,000% better than that the Genesis game. Super smooth animation, kickin' music, this is a supercharged action game. Just don't sit through the crappy between-levels postage-stamp-sized FMV, press dat button and get on with the gameplay!

Sonic CD - if you like Sonic and haven't already played through the newer and excellent Xbox live port of Sonic CD already!

Pitfall: the Mayan Adventure - 98% the same as the Genesis version, but with far better sounds & soundtrack. Fun platformer.

Eternal Champions CD - I don't really enjoy the gore (and its plentiful and bloody disgusting, although cartoonish in appearance), but there is no denying it has a fairly fun fight engine and tons of content and cool sci-fi backstory. The developers shoulda got a gold medal for their efforts, this had to have been a labor of love. Get a FAQ and start learning combos and unlocking the many hidden characters .. like a chicken! I think there are 24 chars in all. Great techno/rave tunes too.

Guardian Heroes is a classic! (on Sega Saturn). Hope you find it 'affordably' !

You might like Spider-Man vs Kingpin CD too. It's well done overall with plenty of content and nice graphics & music. I had fun finding all the comic books.

Y'know, I bought Flashback for Sega CD a few weeks ago and haven't tried it yet. This thread is making me want to hook up my Sega CD tonight. Something about the fall makes me SEGA-nostalgic. Anyway, let us know once you've bought something.

I'm hoping to find the two I named, Guardian Heroes and Revengers of Vengeance, at a flea market. These games are pricey, I had no idea! Might buy Sewer Sharks for my first.

Thanks for telling me about Guardian Heroes for Saturn, I didn't even notice it. *do'h*

I was looking at Snatcher, I'm probably better off buying that for the Saturn, only two copies on ebay are $450, yikes.

Scrolling through Ebay, looking for games with their original cases and manuals. They need a search option for that. But scrolled over Corpse Killer. I'm a huge zombie game fan so this will probably be the first game I buy.

Also Ground Zero Texas is looking pretty good, decisions decisions.

Sewar Shark is a must play on this console for me. Sure, it has FMV in it, and not many of us care for that at all, but the story line is something that everyone in gaming should go through. I have the entire opening scene memorized and have since I got the game with my Sega CD for Christmas so many years ago.

Sonic CD, but that should go without saying. I love the original sound track to that game, I downloaded that for my andriod and they changed the music, it broke my heart a little.

Some of the light gun games were a lot of fun when I was a kid. Who Shot Johnny Rock stands out in my mind though I haven't played it in years to be honest.

The Sega CD is a wierd system with odd games. Things are just different with that console. You can burn the games youself and try them if you really want to. I like owning the disc, but at this point Sega doesn't make money off you buying the games, so I can't see the harm in buring them before you buy them anyway. Try a bunch of them and see what you are into. The only cost is 1 CDR and some time.

It includes both US and JP soundtracks... or are you saying they messed with those soundtracks?

Ecco, Sol Feace, Android Assault, Flashback, Lunar 1 and 2, Popful Mail, Rise of the Dragon, Silpheed, Eternal Champions, Snatcher, Shining Force CD, Dark Wizard (I have a spare copy, apparently. Cheap! Great strategy game! Sorry for the plug, but this just popped in my head).

I also liked Cadillacs and Dinosaurs and Time Gal, but you may not.

Terminator was pretty good too

and Sewer Shark is a requirement. Any Sega CD owner who doesn't at least OWN this game, is a shmuck!

From all I have seen with it the sound track for the US version I know and love is not there. The game certainly plays with a sound track I have never heard before. I know nothing of the JP sound track so I guess it could easily be that one. Even if both are there why would the JP sound track be the default for the game downloaded in the US with a US carrier? I'll look more into it, I played a few levels before, the music bugged me because I loved it so, and I turned it off. I did that a few times, so maybe there is an option I just assumed wasn't there. We see where those assumptions get you now don't we :dunce: .

Some great recommendations! There's not a whole lot I can add, so I will throw out Android Assault, Lords of Thunder, and Flink. The first two are excellent shoot 'em ups, while the later is a decent side-scroller, and a Sega CD exclusive in the US (I think it was released on the Mega Drive in Europe).

Also, regarding some peoples' FMV hate, keep in mind that there are quite a few games on the system that feature heavy use of FMV, but aren't necessarily "FMV games" in the traditional sense (i.e., Sewer Shark, Tomcat, Night Trap, etc.). For example, Mansion of Hidden souls relies on FMV, but in the same way that the 7th Guest does (or more so, Lunacy on the Saturn)--Basically, it's a point 'n click adventure game first and foremost, and simply uses the FMV to convey your environments. Likewise, Dune is a pretty involved adventure game with a lot of strategy elements. It primarily uses FMV to show the travel across the planet you are on, but that is basically the extent of it (I think it sometimes gets miscategorized as a FMV game). Iron Helix is another somewhat similar example to Mansion of Hidden Souls in the way that FMV is used, although from what I've played of it so far, it's not very good regardless.

No, both soundtracks are indeed there. He must have missed the BGM change option.

I was a huge fan of the SegaCD when it came out. I was really into the multimedia aspect and the promise of the expanded storage capacity. I know the SegaCD gets dogged a lot but it had a pretty decent run for an add-on. The library is somewhat uneven but there's a lot of great games in there no doubt.

As others said the "Enhanced Cartridge" games are mostly very good. Batman Returns, Earthworm Jim, Hook, The Terminator, Cliffhanger, Spider-man... they all take the pretty solid cart originals and add onto it. Batman Returns was particularly kick ass with all the batmobile/batwing levels. The CD format didn't work for some games though, loading times make Mortal Kombat virtually unplayable..

The FMV games are pretty prolific on the system, but that fad had to be worked out and I guess it was a good thing they did it early on. Not all of the games are crap. Sewer Shark has it's charms and was incredibly impressive on launch. I never found Night Trap to be a very engaging game but probably worth a look given its history. I'd definitely take a look at some of the LD games like Time Gal, Cobra Command and Road Avenger. If you like the Dragon's Lair type games those are pretty fun -- although relatively straight forward and easy to beat. My least favorite FMV game is probably Wirehead, it seems like the designed the game so that the obvious/logical choice was always wrong.

If you like RPGs the Lunar games are good. Most of the working designs games are worth a show - popful mail, etc.

There's also a bevy of games that while not particularly fun (ie Bram Stokers Dracula) are worth seeing just for the innovative use of FMV. Just a shame the game sucks.

There's plenty of random games that are decent. BC Racers wasn't bad at all for example.

Snatcher is definitely a must play, one of my favorites on the system. Similiar but not quite as good is the Cobra game Space Adventure. The Dynamix adventure games like Willy Beamish didn't translate over so well -- best to play those on the PC.

Anyway good luck, its a fun system.

Man totally forgot about Mansion of Hidden Souls! That's a definitely must-play as well. One of my favorite Sega CD games for sure. The puzzles are pretty straight forward and nothing is that taxing.. but the environment is really creepy and has lots of great atmosphere. I'll never forget that ticking clock..

I didn't throw Snatcher in because of the cost. I have a burned Copy that I like a lot. I'm on a Mac, and burning the ISO files seems more difficult on Macs. Or I'm too cheap to buy a copy of Toast. :) Snatcher is the only burned game I own. The rest are from my original early/mid 90's collection (my model 2 still works) and occasionally I'll dip into eBay to add to my collection. Did that for Cobra Command & Road Avenger. I like WIng Commander because it is the easiest way for me to relive possibly my favorite original PC game.

I'd stay away from Corpse Killer. I have it on 32X, and I think the video down grade to 64 colors only would make it unplayable.
