Implementing AI in BASIC (or Pascal)

This is an odd question, but can anyone point me to source code (preferably in BASIC, but Pascal is also useful) for a game with a decent computer opponent? I am particularly interested in Chess or Checkers. I relaise that it would be painfully slow; I am more interested in the algorithm.

I recall many years ago playing a Go game written in BASIC (for the Coco), but it was a very poor, bug-ridden version.

I understand that C or Assembly would normally be the way to go with this, but I'd like source code that I can understand. ;)
