+therealbountybob
Will fix that! We had a good game tonight with trbb a Humanoid and bluecat as Leggite. It was a 3 way contest with the new incetive of not screwing over the competition for the good of the colony, but still trying to win affecting my play at times luckily bluecat mad a serious error and let a load of crystite spoil costing her the game (about 2000); it was really close in the end. I had a steady go where I didn't have a single food plot the entire game but was lucky on one turn when the homeworld relatives came in good with some much needed provisions (thanks guys) trbb (humanoid) 29,229 bluecat (leggite) 29,143 mechtron (mechtron!) 26,855 mechtron (also mechtron!) 21,186 Total: 106,
+therealbountybob
In last nights game bluecat had her first go as humanoid so it was a tough colony; we met the minimun standards! Green Mechtron was leading until turn 11, then I had the lead for the first time only to lose a plot It was very close in the end: trbb (Humanoid) 20,441bluecat (Humanoid) 20,309Mechtron Green 18,060 Mechtron Blue 15,549 Total 74,
carlsson
At the end of the 11th round, violet Humanoid (me) had a 660 pts lead over blue Mechtron. Delmoko
Awesome... I finally put a spreadsheet together at work this past week. What is your email... I'll send it to you. I can't attach an excel file here. We just started playing the Commodore version. What a difference from the Atari version!!! After 10+ years, the computer (The Blue Mechtron) actually beat us! carlsson
I wrapped preformatted plain text into a (CODE) segment, an old trick to get fixed formatting on various forums. I think Delmoko's data has a bit too many columns to format nicely as plain text, but you could always have a try.
carlsson
For that matter, did anyone of you try the IBM PC version yet? It was made available just the other year, and I read it has a 24 month mode which most probably would change the total figures at the end. Personally, I think it'd get a bit dull to live through another 12 rounds without expansion, just refining, planning and trading.

Interesting that the C64 version may have different logic / be harder than the Atari version. I just wish the game had a bit more variety of Mechtron behaviour as they are pretty dumb!!!
carlsson
I had a backup copy of the C64 version that at least on the machine I played it on, made the computer player move up and down by itself in a land auction with no other buyers. That is, it would move up to the minimum bid level, then move below it, back onto minimum bid, go below etc until the time was up and there was a 50% chance the computer would buy land for minimum bid, given that is was low enough to start with of course. When it comes to other seasoned players, they wouldn't let go of an affordable plot of land anyway so this bug would not be visible unless everyone but one computer were terribly strapped for cash. I might try to load the MSX version too, although I think it is not as faithful as the other versions.
+therealbountybob
Wonder why they consciously changed the logic - perhaps unintentionally due to porting the code / each machine's idiosyncrasies - wonder what the release dates were - you'd think the latest relased version would have the best logic???! There's a project for you! Look forward to hearing about the other version. Happy MULEing everyone
carlsson
In my case, it could also have been a very tiny and unusual read error, bug or hardware problem that caused it to act that way. As for logic, I read the backstory on how the IBM PC version came to, and how the team got an Atari 800 disassembly and had to play the original game over and over to figure out the rules, like Ozark never had formalized any specs to implement towards, or perhaps they didn't want to disclose such specs to a 3rd party firm even if they were licensed to do a port. I know from other posts on AtariAge that in modern day, the game has been reverse engineered with specs, IIRC based on the Atari version with comments on how the others may differ. Interestingly, apart from Planet MULE there is this new, commissioned game M.U.L.E. Returns for iOS and soon to be Android. I'm not sure even that dev team had any specs to work from, or had to reverse engineer the original game again to implement most things as people remember them to work. They have tried to on purpose make rule changes, but the majority seems to want the old gameplay in its entirety. Perhaps it is as simple as the methodology to formalize a specification, implement and if required update the spec to match implementation, wasn't as common among all software developers 30 years ago as it should be today? That meaning they might not have had a pretty spec to submit to e.g. K-Byte who did the IBM PC version
carlsson
Tonight I tried to be smart and play the beginner species Flapper. My intention was to beat the HSC record for this species but in practise everything soon took a turn for the worse. With three computer players not particularly interested in food, a fire in the store, a bit of bad planning and spoilage and that I only had one plot that soon got infested with pest, the market price for the few (none) bars of food available for trade skyrocketed. If it hadn't been for the fact that the green computer player got a gift from his home-world containing three bars of food, the colony probably would have starved to death somewhere round 6. Or at least, there would not have been any more development from then on, just acquiring lone plots of land. Of course I missed out on selling both food and later on smithore when the price was high, and in the end I didn't even win the game, being a mere 190 points behind. Carlsson (Flapper): 21116 pts Colony total: 71273 pts By the way, it looks like my score from December 27 (see above) hasn't been added to the high score lists? carlsson
Just like the WOPR computer in WarGames, I return to playing this game over and over until I win it. Actually I thought a Flapper would be a walk in the park, but after two consecutive second places, I'm starting to think that the "beginner species" may have its own challenges. I dunno if it is worse production or something? I seem to get more time per round when playing this species, but it doesn't help much if you have nothing useful to do, perhaps get time for an extra round of assay or hunt the wumpus if you're into that. Carlsson (Flapper): 19893 pts Colony Total: 76368 pts This time I tried to play the "all-in" Crystite game. It didn't start off as well as I had hoped for, and the combination of buying up computer players' spare crystite bars just to see the friendly pirates show up the next round... didn't improve my position. We were three players very close to eachother at the end of the 11th round though, but a decent crystite price was what put the blue computer on top. carlsson
What is a better way to finish off a Friday evening than playing a round of M.U.L.E? This time it turned out to be a cut-throat session, with blue computer player for a long while about 2000 pts ahead of me. At the end, I tried every ugly trick I know from the book, ranging from denying him to buy any energy to wasting (!) the last two mules in the store right in front of his turn, just so he wouldn't be able to deploy his two unused plots with even more crystite. In a combination with some nice pirates and very bad planning from the computer - he purchased leftover smithore at such volumes that he suffered spoilage the next turn despite not having any own production, something I'd expect to see in a newbie player but not in the AI - I managed to squeeze the win after all. Not a superb score by any means, but a win is a win... +therealbountybob
As blucat was away I had a very rare one player game of M.U.L.E. it was strange. Compared to two player (apart from not being quite as fun as you can't sing a chorus of "where's your mule gone!" when your opponent makes a mule scarperring blunder) there seemed to be less luck, good or bad. The game was tough from the off, I played as Packer (my favourite) and decided to go for Smithore as there were few 3 mountain plots, as ususal I didn't manage to captitalise on this and was short of food and money from the off! The Mechtrons did there usual incompetant acts of making Smithore and always selling it which doesn't help things. The pirates came on round 5 and there wasn't even an ounce of Crystite, not even a plot, HA! It was diffuicult to establish where the 3 high Crystite plots (ok I could have assayed the land) but I bagged one and luckily the one next to it was high too! A comfortable win in the end but a poor colonly only meeting the minimum standards [shame] there were a couple of fires but nothing major to report. In the end Food (and Energy?) were over $200 a unit!!! Trbb Packer 23,503 Colony 74,594 I'll update the scores in the week
