toptenmaterial
There is an old Xbox for sale at my local Goodwill- I'm considering buying it. Are there any 2D-ish platformers for the first Xbox?
onlysublime
get it! then mod it. it'll totally be worth it! you can stick in a big hard drive, copy all your Xbox discs to the hard drive (or download illegally if that's your thing). run emulators (even with online networking to play with other people). toptenmaterial
Cool man! I've heard that Xbox has some serious chops as an emu rig. I'm considering installing home brew on my Wii as well.
onlysublime
yes, modding the Wii is easy too! I did mine early when it was still hardware-modding only so it was pricey.
toptenmaterial
Any difference in performance for emulation?
onlysublime
what do you mean by difference? it all depends on what you're trying to emulate. if you're talking older stuff like MAME, Atari 2600/7800/8-bit/Lynx, C64, CPS-1, CPS-2, etc., the Xbox can handle them fine and it's fairly accurate. as you go toward newer stuff, things become more dicey. And as you go toward the newer stuff, memory becomes the main issue. Remember, the original Xbox only had 64 MB of RAM. If you are able to upgrade the RAM, it would help immensely (with emulation and with stuff like XBMC) but it's very difficult to find the right RAM at a decent price to upgrade the Xbox. The Wii is definitely the better option for newer stuff especially since there's a small chance that the emulators get upgraded over time. The Atari emulators for the Xbox, for example, stopped being updated a long time ago. Though that's less important for older systems because the emulation is fairly mature and accurate. Good emulation updates is more important for newer things like the N64.
Hyper_Eye
Xbox emulators are still frequently updated and there are a number of active communities dedicated to it. Check out http://www.emuxtras.net. That is the primary place to find madmab who releases many of the current emulators. There are two things that make Xbox emulators better than Wii... HD resolutions if you like scaling your classic games and extras: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5JqbJOZxmxQ Seeing the video previews, box shots, etc. when you scroll the games is very nice. I do like the Wii emus as well. Tantric releases a lot of them and he manages a lot of great Wii libraries including SDL. If you are interested in an Xbox with 128MB memory look for what is called a "Trusty" Xbox. It is also not terribly difficult to find debug kits floating around and they all have 128MB but people typically want $200 for them and get $150-$175. For most stuff the regular Xbox is just fine. Oh btw... it may not be 2D but if you want to play one of the best platformers ever made pick up Psychonauts for the Xbox.
