Starscream
Sony had a live conference not too long ago about the PS4. I didn't read too much but I figured I'd start a thread so everyone can continue to talk about how this will destroy video games, Sony is evil, etc
moycon
This is an outrage. I'm speculating the console will be DLC only, and come in two SKUs. The basic model which will cost $899.95 and a premio model which will cost $936.00. No one will buy either because everyone hates DLC and also because of the outrageous price. In three years Sony's game division will go under. Which really won't matter because there is another video game crash right around the corner anyways!
Starscream
Ok, read up a little. Looks to be Move compatible, has a touchpad on the controller, comes out Holiday 2013, appears that you can upload in game play to social networks, Vita remote play, and backwards compatible through downloads, No price that I can see, and I didn't see a picture of the unit itself. Has a good list of developers onboard, and some Killzone footage.
Reaperman
I bailed about halfway through. They'd pretty much have to give me one if they want me onboard. Neither of us really want that, so after 15 years away I've gone back to PC gaming. Can somebody explain to me why I can't enjoy this "new fastest psn network" on hardware I already own? Is there a reason I can't stream games on it too? Edited February 21, 2013 by Reaperman
AtariLeaf
Sony said the console would be available for the holiday 2013 season. It did not immediately disclose pricing. - According to Sony's President: Ben Dover.
godslabrat
So... Sony announced they have a bunch of devs lined up, and a new version of PSN? This did NOT warrant an entire media event. Methinks they're distracting from some very bad news.
Hyper_Eye
Man I feel like I just got my PS3. I haven't even played all the way through a game on it. How did I fall so far behind?
S1500
Man I feel like I just got my PS3. I haven't even played all the way through a game on it. How did I fall so far behind? This. Okay, so it was released in '06, and now it's 2013. Weren't we told the latest gen(ie then) systems would last significantly longer, and not be turned out so quickly in favor of the next generation. Look how long it took for the PS3 to gain steam(after we balked at the $600 price), and for developers to get comfortable with it. As time marches on, the games get better, with better graphics squeezed out. So far that leaves MS with nothing to be released for the next gen. Perhaps their winning move is "not to play". Their install base is great. That means $ for game sales for THAT platform.
AtariLeaf
Man I feel like I just got my PS3. I haven't even played all the way through a game on it. How did I fall so far behind? I'm a big racing fan and have been considering getting a PS3 for games like mod nation racers and the latest NFS Hot Pursuit, perhaps others. Hopefully a good price drop will entice me to make the plunge.
Atarifever
Sony had a live conference not too long ago about the PS4. I didn't read too much but I figured I'd start a thread so everyone can continue to talk about how this will destroy video games, Sony is evil, etc Do people still talk about that stuff? How can a console destroy videogames? No one plays those. That's like saying constant horse travel is destroying our highways. On a more serious note, I think it sounded pretty cool. The controller still has the D-pad in the wrong spot, but otherwise all the social stuff and the games list looks pretty rad. I don't think anyone could be upset with what they showed today. Streaming demos is a great idea, as is spectating. I used Onlive for exactly that (and nothing else), and that is where streaming is actually really cool. It's a very smart play by Sony, and it will work out great. I'm looking forward to the price announcement at E3.
OldSchoolRetroGamer
backwards compatible through downloads, IE: Let me guess, Sony will charge you a fee for the honour to play the same games you already bought ONCE AGAIN ! xg4bx
I was cautiously optimistic but I didn't hear anything that even made me raise an eyebrow in interest. The lack of BC is a huge knock against it imo.

OldSchoolRetroGamer
Wanna bet we have not seen the actual console yet because it is "download only?" all that talk about the "cloud" and game streaming, and I have heard nothing about backwards compatibility with the games you own or the Disc Drive / Games Media?
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Yea just like Nintendo. Why? Why? Because paying to play for past titles you already bought is nickel and diming bullshit. I don't care that Nintendo does it to, it's wrong whoever does it. How many times we have to pay to play the same titles? Edited February 21, 2013 by OldSchoolRetroGamer

But the difference is Nintendo is only charging $1 to update your VC games with updated Wii U features, if you choose to do so. If not they're still playable, as are your original Wii games. Sony wants you to throw out your $60 discs and buy them again.
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Technically only once is required. Anything after that is a choice. Yes I am aware and agree, exactly why I chose not to. My original comment meant as a sarcastic point being Sony comes off as if consumers should be happy and thankful to keep paying over and over. Never said that it was not just as much this generations of gamers fault for bending over and taking it. Bottom line, every new gen of consoles will push the limits of how little you get for your money. No packaging, no manuals, just files we have the privilege to "licence". That may be just fine for some of you but not me. I will just stick with my PC, emulation, old consoles etc. Edited February 21, 2013 by OldSchoolRetroGamer

They may have held this event too early in some aspects because it did raise more questions. On the other hand, intrigue does generate buzz. I am going to assume that streaming is going to be important for more than just one reason. Backwards compatibility is probably one, but Sony has done a good job on the PS3 for day 1 release games being available from PSN to download which I welcome as an option. I would be very happy with a system that wouldn't require physical media. My doubts are if Sony could have a safe and capable network to do it Edit: It does have a blu ray drive. Necron99
I think this might be the first gen I don't buy a system. I don't care for tablets on my controller or waving my arms around and I like to physically own my games instead of renting them until it's obsolete. btw. sony promised a whole pile of stuff with the PS3 that never materialized. maybe i just don't care anymore. there's tonnes of older good games i can waste my time on without pointless trophies and dumb gimmicks.
+wood_jl
BAH! Big Madison Avenue Dog-and-Pony Show, and nothing of substance. Here's what would have constituted substance: (1) Will it play used games? (2) How will games be distributed? (3) Price of the unit? (4) Price of the games? Already giving up on "backward compatibility" as the definition of placing your already-owned PS3/PS2/PS1 disc in. Buying (again) and downloading those titles ported over does not constitute "backward compatibility." Everything else is horseshit.
JamesD
I looked at the processing/gpu/memory specs. Why buy a game console that is only a PC that can't be upgraded when I can build a PC with the same specs that can be upgraded for less money?
Karyyk
Price is the most important bit of info Sony could have shared. They didn't, which doesn't exactly bode well (especially considering that this is the company that recommended working longer hours to be able to afford a PS3 when people complained about the price tag on it).
Karyyk
I looked at the processing/gpu/memory specs. Why buy a game console that is only a PC that can't be upgraded when I can build a PC with the same specs that can be upgraded for less money? That's really not a great comparison. Just because the hardware is similar doesn't mean that the capabilities are the same or that a closed hardware platform doesn't have advantages for the developers. I mean, Macs and PC's are basically the same hardware, but I doubt you're going to hear of too many proclaiming the former as the superior gaming platform. Bottom line is that there will be games on one platform that won't be available on the other. Go where the games you want to play are...
