PS4 Announced

I looked at the processing/gpu/memory specs. Why buy a game console that is only a PC that can't be upgraded when I can build a PC with the same specs that can be upgraded for less money?

I use to be a PC gamer, I eventually got out of it in favor of consoles. Every 6 months to a year you have to upgrade something just to play a new game (in the long run it will cost more to maintain a gaming PC then a console), whereas aon a console its around 4-6 years.

What pissed me off the most about PC gaming is driver related bugs and issues (mainly with game compatibility) which can crash the computer in a blink of an eye.

Then online play, hackers are more prevalent on PC then they are on consoles, you run into just as many immature people on PCs as you do on console.

The only thing I like about PC gaming over console gaming is the ability to fully mod the game on PC, the loss in Modding the game is a sacrifice I was willing to make to save my sanity.

Sony didn't give enough information for me to care either way.

I'm curious about the next generation of consoles, but none of these companies have offered me anything to actually get excited about since the Dreamcast, PS2, and Xbox. Sure, each generation is more powerful and the graphics are better, but there hasn't been hardware I've anxiously anticipated owning for many years. When one of these companies can recapture that interest, they will also recapture a lot more of my money.

I was pretty excited for the PS3 when it was first announced, then when more info came, it brought a lot of disappointment. The lack of color choice (initially they said there would be three choices) and the price of the unit to me were the big ones. I went from "I'll be pre-ordering", to "forget that". I still wound up getting one pretty quick. I lucked into a unit before Xmas, sold it for $100's more than I paid for it, and used the profits to buy a unit for myself a few months after Xmas when the stores had them again. I do think it's a solid system, and I've had some decent fun with it. It alone inspired me to get a 3DTV to take advantage of the fact it can play 3D BluRays, and that is very cool thing (even though I rarely watch them) The games are decent enough. Really though, I hardly use my PS3 now.

The bottom line is after buying a 360, a PS3 and a Wii very close to the launch of each, over that past few years I realized I don't have the time to justify owning three consoles at once. I have piles of games in the "To Play" pile for all three system. I'm wondering now if I'll ever get to them, and I really want to. I mainly focus on the 360 since the "To Play" pile there is the largest. Eventually I want to make it through them all. I might just be waiting the first year of the new console war out., instead focus on actually playing my "old" games. I'm so dis-interested in the next-gen I didn't even click on the PS4 news links even though they were on the front page of Yahoo.

Exactly. I think a lot of us are in a similar situation. Why people are so eager to pull the trigger on a new system (be it this, or stuff like that Ouya) would lend one to believe that we're somehow starved for entertainment. We're not. We're just spoiled, bored, and full of excess money.

Perhaps you came in under your USRDA of horseshit, then, because that's all the story was, as was the event it covered. :)

Yea just like Nintendo. Why?

Seriously, all these years later and your response to every post about anyone is still "Nintendo boo!" Dude, the console wars are over. Time to circle the wagons with anyone else who still buys consoles.

The backward compatability thing is not really an issue for me. My Wii is a Gamecube now too, as I sold my Gamecue because of the BC. However, a Gamecube right now is $30, so if I want one, I can get one. Similarly, if the Wii U wasn't BC, I could wait five years until I was nostalgic for it, and buy one of the 100 million of them for $30. It is a nice feature, but when you get down to it, it helps the hardware maker more than anyone, so if they remove it, despite it benefitting them, it can't be a popular feature.

Think about it. Places like Gamestop will give you a pile of money during upgrade cycles if you sell your old system while buying the new one (one time last upgrade cycle it was something like $100 off for a last gen system and three games). Having BC means you allow the consumer to take advantage of deals like that, as they can keep the rest of their library and sell their old system while getting the new system and losing nothing. As well, it makes anyone with a pre-exisiting library more likely to stick with the same hardware maker. So if you have a huge 360 library you really like, you are more likely to buy a 720 that can play it, than a PS4 which cannot.

If in the face of those advantages they aren't doing it, it means there is very little demand.

I have regretted every early adoption I have ever done. You end up sitting on a system with no games for like a year. Remember how people who early adopted the 360 had to make a big deal about King Kong: The game of the Movie? Or how people paid a ton more for the 3DS early on so they could play N64 ports? Meanwhile, if you buy a 3DS now, you have a ton of games, with a pile on the way, and a bigger screen, at a hugely lower price. And if you buy a 360 now you have a massive library, built in wifi, a more reliable console for less money.

I set myself a rule this generation to avoid this problem. I will upgrade no sooner than one year after the release of the last "big" game I want that comes out for my current system. That gives me new games to the end of the cycle, and a year to play down the back library. For me that will be the last "big" Wii game I care about, which is Pandora's Tower when it comes out this Spring. The one year will hopefully get me through Xenoblade and the Last Story from last year. By spring 2014, I assume the Wii U will have a library of some kind, and a package deal that makes the two initial SKUs look over priced. Actually, the ZombiU package already makes people who bought earlier look kind of silly.

A late adoption could also lead to regret. It just depends on what they do in the future. I adopted PS3 early. So, I have backwards compatibility with PS1 and PS2. If I waited then the only backwards compatibility I would have is buying some of the games again as downloads. There is no way to know if things will change for the better or worse. When you decide to adopt is kind of a gamble.

Meh. I've been through this game with Sony.

They took away major features.

PSP remote play was crippled and restricted.

Forced firmware updates were a nasty surprise.

The last round PS3 was a unique piece of hardware. This time I have a nearly identical PC under by desk.

No more.

UPDATE: I just realised I'm not buying a PS4 because of the horrid stuff the company is doing AROUND the system. Previously, I judged a system based on the value compared to its peers. What a strange world we live in now!

By the way, after looking at the hi-res shots of the controller, I have to say that controller looks pretty slick. Not because of everything they jammed into it, but because it looks really comfortable. It's the first controller I have seen that actually looks better to me than the 360/ 360 PC one.

Yes. The bright blue light on the front will blink frantically to alert you Sony has sent your real name and address to the police for swapping games with a friend. Good times.

I'm sorry, is there a controversy in controversville? I don't follow most of this stuff anymore, so I am actually confused by this.

There's no way they'll physically let us swap games with friends any more. If that system had a BD drive, there would have been mention of "you can still watch all your shit BD movies in 3d or 4k or whatever." "you can even tweetshare to your twatsits while you're doing it so they'll know you have a ps4"

Any guesses on the 'gamesharing' that they cut nearly in half during the ps3 lifecycle? I have a guess on that.

For those of you concerned with whether or not PS4 will play used games:

On a side note, I know they are trying to keep up the tradition of calling their systems Playstation #, but to me, that name scheme is really boring at this point. I was hoping for a total overhaul, including a name change.

That's exactly how I feel but the other way around. Since I was heavily invested in a PS2 I heavily invested in a PS3. So my larger pile is on the PS3 and I hardly turn on the Xbox.

Actually I hardly turn any of them on since I've started gaming through Steam and on the PC.

At this point the only thing that I really don't want on a future console is online only.

If I get a PS4 I'll only be interested in PS4 exclusive games. I have three PS3's and three Xbox 360's to play my old games on.

Screw it.

PSN purchases will not carry over to PlayStation 4

''In news that is sure to encourage grimacing and facepalming, Sony has confirmed purchases made on the PlayStation Network will not carry over from PS3 to PS4. Same goes for your game saves, too. For Christ's sake, Sony ... you just couldn't resist gunning for some bad PR.''

I posted that in another thread as to why it makes sense to stick with PC gaming especially when it comes to digital downloads. That's like buying STEAM games and then next year they say you need a new PC to play Super Meat Boy or LIMBO.

If Microsoft makes the next Xbox offline and they don't block used games AND they also allow you to play XBLA games then they will win hands down.

Along with a Japanese Sony rep saying that used games will be allowed on the PS4, Kotaku confirmed that a constant online connection will NOT be required.

http://kotaku.com/5985874/ps4-will-not-require-an-always+online-connection

So that seems to be two major rumors about the PS4 shot down.

I'm still curious as to pricing. With current PS3's selling in the $269 - $299, I don't believe this new console will come in under $399. And as I've said, I don't believe ANY console will fly off the shelves at an over $300 price point.

Time will tell....
