It will be easier for developers to develop for, esp. PC game developers. It should help out both the PC and the Xbox platforms in terms of ensuring quality games on both platforms. $499 but $299 if you agree to a 2 year $10/month Xbox Gold membership. I skipped the 360, but I think I will buy a 720 since it has a Blu-ray player, and I like the new AMD CPU/GPU setup. I wonder if Microsoft will skip the kinda silly "X" shape of previous Xboxes? No one even knows the name for certain. What I do know is that the launch 360 had many years of problems with the RROD, so I will wait to buy this one post-launch for sure. Nothing against Xbox...I have simply learned from experience that new hardware = lots of bugs and issues more often than not. It won't be backwards compatible with the 360 but there will be a cheaper new model 360 released at the same time. The new machine will require a network connection to be always on and will have a blu-ray player. I hear the games will be compatible with PCs so the same game will work in both. Skype will be built in. I also understand there will be a free version of Visual Studio Express for developing indie games for the new XBox. Windows 8 will be its core OS so the new machine sounds like a $500 PC with a high powered GPU and Kinect 2.0. There is also suppose to be a change to the XBox live family subscription. onlysublime Posted April 27, 2013 Share Posted April 27, 2013 yeah, not much reason to have multiple threads. and all you listed are rumors. some more likely than others. the most nebulous rumors have to do with pricing and that's still going to changed and modified to meet the competition, the needs of the retailer, and the needs of the parent company. I think the reliability of these consoles will be much more reliable. Last gen, both the 360 and PS3 went the Pentium 4-style route and went with long deep pipelines for their processors. think of it as a freeway with few exits. that let's you really ramp up the speed. but if you miss the exit you need, you seriously have to backtrack. so you compensate by going even faster. In order to prevent long stalls, you compensate by massively boosting the clockrate. but by boosting the clockrate, you seriously boost the power requirement and heat generated. which was the devil of the 360 and PS3. the CPU in the PS4 and next Xbox will be based on the AMD Jaguar, the next-gen chip that will replace the AMD Bobcat. the Jaguar is aimed at the mobile market, especially next-gen tablets. a lot of performance for very little power and heat is what AMD is promising. it's why a lot of PC people are mocking it because it's a glorified Atom CPU but with a much much better GPU attached. I'll have to wait and see, but to be honest, most of what I want a console for, is no longer applicable (such as complete games, not having to download patches, lack of drm, good controllers, etc, etc) I'll be much more likely to go PC this generation. Even if it's $299 (which it won't be), I see no reason to shell out that kind of money until Microsoft works out the hardware kinks. I just hope MS doesn't officially and immediately dump development on the 360 like they did with the original XBOX. The installed base is probably too much to ignore this go-round, but we'll see. We are talking about a game console. The requirements are different. As to the original question... I'm not ready to buy into a new console generation. I had the 360 on day 1 and I never regretted it. Right now I have a backlog that seems insurmountable. I think getting a new console would stress me out. I still find myself impressed playing games on my current consoles. Of course if someone wanted to give me one I would not turn it down. Maybe I'm just unlucky, or my standards are too high. On both of mine, the left stick doesn't quite center. My first one which came with my 'slim 4gb arcade' frequently slides gently upwards when released (which I didn't notice at first since I mostly play driving games), the second one (which was a new-old-stock wireless pc setup) pulls slightly to the right. On PC, I can calibrate much (not all) of it out, and/or increase deadzone in game settings that support it, but on the 360 itself, it is *far* more annoying. Never really had an issue with stick centering on a controller before--5200 aside... It's centering mechanism doesn't seem to provide enough force. It's not like these are old controllers, either. If I see a game that persuades me to buy the new hardware, I will. For the 360 that game was Rock Band. Of course I'm still playing Rock Band 3 and I'm still smarting over new music DLC coming to end, so getting me interested in the next generation is a tall order. One week from today as a matter of fact! MS has already stated the main unit won't require an always on internet connection to play games, so I'm not worried about that anymore. Also I think the 360 has the best controller of any console ever made. I've got around a dozen controllers, with the exception of one about 3 years ago, they all center fine. On that one, it was a simple as taking the controller apart and cleaning the crud out of the controller so the one stick, wouldn't stick, any more. I can only hope there will be a sequel on the next gen for the following titles: L4D; Skyrim; Fallout; Borderlands; Battlefield Dare to dream! It's not popular or needed now so of course they'll wait. Always on just doesn't excite me. The Simms kind of demonstrated how NOT to do it. I haven't seen a company do it right yet. PASS can already use what ever controller I want on my PC with display hooked up via HDMI to my big screen TV and play almost the same games and more I am happy with my Wii PS3 and other consoles I got and as others have in common a backlog of games to play will save the hundreds of dollars and pass on the next gen for now put the money towards a bigger order in the AA store 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
