Robert M
Hi all, Just so you all know that there is hope for the Grand Prize winner of actually getting a homebrew cartridge. Here's a screen shot of the current title screen for Gravity Ball, which I plan to have be my first Homebrew release. Cheers,

Robert M
Also, I looked at the cartridges I listed as prizes, and found that the Infiltrate cartridge is not working. So I will come up with a replacement later today. Sorry about that. I should have checked it out before listing it as a prize. snorlaxnut
The main reason I want small is so it wouldn't be hard to produce on the screen. More characters means its harder for me to make the VCS display my name/logo. Would you like us to show a picture of what our name and logo ideas might look like on the title screen of the game? I have made a picture of your Gravity Ball screenshot with my logo idea on it and tried to make it look like what it would look like on the screen. If you would like us to do that, I will post the picture later.

snorlaxnut
Sounds great! Share what you have. O.K., I cut and pasted the "Gravity Ball" part of your picture and put it into a ".gif" picture, corrected the colors, and tried to make "DigiRETRO" look halfway decent. I just used the word "DigiRETRO" this time on the "©2003" line as an example. I'll try to make the logo a little bit better if I have time before the contest is over. Robert M
Snorlaxnut and Krisjohn, Those are both great, but unfortunately both of them could not be displayed by an atari 2600 without resorting to flicker. If you want to draw a logo that a VCS can render, you need to follow these restrictions. 1. The horizontal resolution is 160 pixels. The screen image is drawn in a series of lines. Each line is refered to as a scanline. 2. On each scanline you have the playfield, 2 sprites, 2 missles, and the "ball" to draw with. a. The playfield covers the entire line. The playfield divides the line into 40 segments 4 pixels wide each. Each 4 pixel segment may be 1 of 2 colors. The 2 colors and which segments are each color can be changed every scanline. Look at the sunset in Barnstorming for a nice example of what playfield graphics alone can do. b. Each sprite is 8 pixels wide. Each sprite pixel can be 1,2,4,or 8 screen pixels wide. Sprites can be repeated on the same scanline using programming tricks. The most common trick is to weave 6 sprites together to make the illusion of a single big sprite 48 pixels across. The sprites in Fu Kung are good examples of this technique. Generating sprites larger than 48 pixels across is not a trivial task, and probably more work than I want to do. For an example combining Playfield and Sprite Graphics; look at the Activision logo in later games. I am pretty sure it uses Playfield graphics to make the Rainbow, and sprites to write the word Activision. Lastly, the missles and ball can be used to add vertical and angled lines to the logo. Just note that the Ball must match one of the 2 Playfield colors, and the missles must be the same color as the sprites. Kris, I like your VBI entry best so far of all your entries. So focus on that one if you want to make another on-screen logo attempt. Thanks for all the effort guys!

snorlaxnut
O.K. I read Robert M's last post and tried to figure out how to make my logo look better on the screen. I changed the screen colors so you can see how small my logo is. This is about as good I can get, drawing on my paint program. Seeing my 10+ entries in the QB label contest proves I can't draw good. I'll come back to the forum when the contest is over. Good luck to everybody in the contest!

Robert M
Well, that puts me out of the contest. Anyway, Gateway To Aphsai's first post in the contest said that there is a C64 game you created. If I can find it on the internet, is it all right to download it and play it on an emulator? Crap! I didn't mean to delete your entry in the first round of eliminations. That's what I get for doing it at 3 in the morning. Now I'm worried I deleted others by mistake too. I'm going to start over. Okay, so if I take the original 59 and add the two I missed from Gateway to Apshai I get 61 entries to the contest: Author => Name Atari Troll => Homegrown Atari Homebrews badbrad Bob Werks Benjam138 => OPERATION:Homebrew Benjam138 => OHB benny huddy => the Homebrew Ranch Bratwurst => Rob-bot Factory chrisbid => VCS Renaissance chrisbid => 6507 Cybergoth => Kazzandra Games Gateway to Aphsai => Yote Productions Gateway to Aphsai => Ropamund Gateway to Aphsai => Retro Player's Media Gateway to Aphsai => Retro Frontier Games Gateway to Aphsai => The Vintage Frontier Gateway to Aphsai => Vintage Frontier Games Gateway to Aphsai => ePRoM Gateway to Aphsai => Janus Games Gateway to Aphsai => Company Yote Gateway to Aphsai => Co.
