MS Clarifies Xbox One Features

Don't get me wrong.... I don't like these new policies from MS and I agree with everything you said.... I'm just showing another possible facet.

I don't think this is good for the gamer.... but it's probably good for the games industry as a 'business model'.... unless it has significant affect on the public buying the next gen consoles, then it's real bad for the video games industry.

I don't know if I will buy next gen yet (I'm unimpressed with the current gen to be honest).... I need to know more and look forward to Sony's future anouncements.

Well, it doesn't look like xbox isn't going to be terribly popular around here.

What's a gamestop going to do? There's one on every block, and microsoft is pushing their profit out and hoping everybody uses their online store as the only retail point. Not a good time to sell video games--new or used. I can hear the gamestop execs packing their golden parachutes now.

Of course like many, I've switched back to PC gaming--in my case after 15 years away. It's just less of a pain in the ass than console gaming anymore. But let's face it, the PC game business model has been even more anti-consumer than xbone 720 for a solid decade now. We've just willingly accepted it.

It feels a lot like the gaming industry is leaving our particular group behind, and considers us a casualty of all the big bucks coming their way.

Well if the press is right the X1 is already pre-selling like hotcakes here in the UK. I don’t see these measures affecting sales at all, especially in the US, where I'm sure most of the country has a good Internet connection, unlike the UK.

I personally have never been a huge fan of places like GameStop and their 2nd hand game policy, as I think they shaft us gamers left, right & deep in the centre. However I do know that most of their profit comes from this area & it does help generate sales of new games. If publisher goes this route on X1 & ps4 I don’t see places like GameStop being around for much longer! Surely the fall out from this will end up being everything will be download only & then this new 2nd hand game revenue stream will stop, as nobody will be able to sell their old games anywhere to get money for new ones?? Meaning less sales of new games. A game of ever diminishing returns.

I know they moan about the 2nd hand market, but when I buy something new, it’s my property to do with what I like after I’m done with it! I can’t think of any after sales market that gets a second bite of the cherry, when the original item gets moved on. Cars being the easiest comparison!

Short sighted, stupid & will probably be the end of gaming as we know it in the long run!!

Speaking for myself, its quite simple: any console that prevents me from trading games with my son's, or prevents me from buying/selling/trading games at flea markets or gaming shows, or prevents me from renting games, is a console I will NOT buy or own.

So far, my Wii U allows me to trade games with my son's, allows me to buy/sell/trade games at flea markets & game shows, and allows me to rent games. And I don't have to be connected to the internet to play games. The Wii U is a keeper in my home.

If this "clarification" from MS is accurate in regards to used gaming & internet connection, then no Xbox One for me.

As for the online every 24 hours... I don't see this as a major biggie as everything is online these days anyway... although I don't understand why its a requirement (or what will happen if its disconnected for over 24 hours?... like when you're moving house or going on vacation etc)

Good luck playing any of your Xbox One games once Microsoft's servers either A) go away or B) Microsoft "obsolesces" the Xbox One and stops supporting it.

Playing devils advocate... its possible that when MS turns off the servers that they also flip a switch inside the firmware that says "we're done profiting from this, go ahead and do what you want with your games".

I wouldn't hold your breath. If they were to do this, it's likely it's because they want you to buy games for any current console they may be producing. That is, if they aren't out of business.

“With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."

I'm pretty sure I can already watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies regardless of whether I have an Xbox One so basically your Xbox One becomes a boat anchor if it's not connected to the net every 24 hours. While my 360 is connected to the net 99.999999999999999999% of the time there are times I've taken it on vacation to places that have no internet connection.

I'm tired of being treated like a pirate. Looks like the only next gen console I'll consider purchasing is a PS4.

What's a gamestop going to do?

They're going to keep on doing what they're doing. Microsoft is going to supply them with a custom system to keep them in business.

There's this attitude that the console makers and publishers are against Gamestop. They're not. They're fully in support of Gamestop's business and practices. What they are against are the smaller chains, the mom and pops. They want to centralize everything under Gamestop. That's why they bend over backwards to not only make Gamestop happy, but to increase it's market share.

Have been passed too many years since I leaved PC gaming when games started coming only playable online and paying $$$.

From what I've read I just don't understand how MS is so blind that is cutting himself his head.

I've got a lot of games from second-hand good quality because the prices for new games are plain high and I just want to play. I'm not interested in downloadable content and I'm not interested in paying for playing online (that's not online gaming, it's more like online slavery ;))

I'm waiting to find out what Sony's plans are. I'm not too confident that they will do any better, Sony have been pretty silent about this topic so I think they are waiting to see what Microsoft plans to do before announcing anything.

As for the online every 24 hours... I don't see this as a major biggie as everything is online these days anyway...

Scenario: It's the year 2034. Can you still play your Xbox One? (at least "officially"?)

Or when the servers eventually go dark 10-15 years down the road will we just get a "The old Xbox Live service is being retired which will cease support for Xbox One & Xbox Two which are way over end-of-life.. Thank you for playing Xbox One all these years!! It was a great ride!" then are no longer able to play our bought consoles and games?

I'm just wondering.. and it's a fair question. I mean heck here we are on a board where we still play a 35+ year old console right? :)

And on the short term.. it's not hard to fathom no internet. What if you are deployed military? Can you play an Xbox One?

It boggles my mind that some folks who joined a forum about old video games can't or won't ponder the future usability of upcoming video games. New video games should have the same opportunity to become classics and they should be dependent on the working condition of the hardware, not the whims of a company with their finger on a server switch.

I love the fact that I will be able to show my son the games I used to play. I'm not sure he will be able to say the same thing.

Same. I've purchased a ton of games through Steam in the past year, and I built a bad-ass gaming PC as well.

..Al

Steam is the way to go now. I've bought the last three Humble Weekly Deal Bundles and spent only $9.50! Week #1: Alan Wake, AW American Nightmare bundle for $1, Week #2: Telltale Games bundle w/ The Walking Dead for $4 and this weeks deal: Serious Sam bundle w/ SS3 HD & SS2 for $4.50. If games are going to be locked to an account, then I would rather be locked into Steam because it doesn't matter what pc your on and I can play Steam games in offline mode when I'm away from home on my laptop.

I used to really hate Steam, and still dislike it's drm. But sadly it's become the best out there. Not because it's gotten that much better, but because everyone else is getting much worse.

With Microsoft Office (O365) if a user is not on the internet for 30 days the apps do not function. They are now doing this with games it seems, that's why ALWAYS ON is a requirement.

It surprises me they are not implementing an offline mode like STEAM.

I highly doubt Sony will do this as they don't have the infrastructure. The major publishers will love the XBox One though because of this.

Edit: All they had to do was just keep things the way they are. Have a feeling publishers are pushing for this from years back.

I really doubt you'll be able to play the Xbox One on Xbox Live for over 10 years. How long was the original Xbox playable on Live again?

All Xbox Live arcade games wont be playable by christmas on the Xbox One. Same with PSN\PS4.

Not only that but you must subscribe again to play online with Xbox One and start the whole cycle over again.

Xbox is now only for the privelaged.

Of course.. and the difference is even without Xbox Live we can still play our original Xbox and the games we have for it all we want. Turn it on, pop in a disc and enjoy. Nothing else needed.

It doesn't appear to be the case for this generation.. at least at this point.

It's funny....In our generation, "retro gamers" main concern is the degradation of our games (ie: BitRot)...in the upcoming generation, this won't even matter. The real concern will be regarding all of the garbage dumps being filled with billions of useless DVD's and BlueRay discs. I hope everyone needs a bunch of drink coasters! :rolling:

Bottom line for me is; the game M$ is trying to sell me for $60 is now only worth $40 because I can't sell it when I am done, so I would pay no more than that. I think they are deluding themselves if they believe that most who are buying a used game would buy new, if used was not available. When I buy used (for a current console) it is because I am not convinced the game is worth full price. Your arrogance blinds you, Master Bill.
