VCR/s-video monitor question

Recommended Posts

I have an old VCR my brother gave me.

I'm trying to connect it to my Panasonic BT-S901Y video monitor (it has s-video)

I am using RCA composite out on the VCR, to an s-video adapter, into the monitor.

it doesn't work.

there is a signal after some experimentation, but it's just jagged snow.

some help?

thanks

ultimately i'd like to use this setup with an Atari 400.

Yeah, S-video to composite cables work well enough one way, not so well the other way. Combining the two signals that make S-video into the one signal that makes up composite is easy. Splitting the two signals again is not easy, or at least it can't be done as easily (or cheaply) as combining them.

There are "composite-to-S-video" cables and adapters out there, but they will cost more, and you need to make certain the cable or adapter is actually designed to do proper signal splitting. Here is one such doohickey.

I'm not familiar enough with the BT-S901Y to know what kind of signal it expects over the BNC connectors, but they may take standard composite video. You could try a BNC to RCA adapter, which tend to be a lot cheaper than composite-to-S-video adapters.

then how to use VCR with this monitor?

thanks

I guess im gonna need a special box or something

I checked the specifications on your monitor and it has composite inputs, it's just that they use a BNC connector instead of the more common RCA. You just need an RCA to BNC cable or adapter.

It is also possible to add both composite and s-video outputs to a 400, there is the older "Little Brother Grows Up" upgrade, the newer "low_budget" upgrade(a litte more complex but should give better quality), and the simple 'kjmann" mod for the 400. The low_budget upgrade is available for sale on eBay, and the schematics are available in the thread below if you want to build your own, it's listed for the 5200 but also applies to the Atari 8-bits.

I have a 4 input S-Video switchbox that I use to hook up my Atari 2600, Sega Nomad, VIC 20 and Amiga CD32 to my C= 1084S monitor. The Nomad and VIC output composite and I use a couple of these to convert to S-Video.

The Nomad's output ends up having vertical stripes (they look like scan lines, but up/down instead of left/right).

The VIC 20 picture looks fine. I suspect it's because its pixels are so much larger.
