I am searching (good) games with more than 16 on-screen colors (excluding title screens):

Alley Cat (22 colors)

Alternate Reality (circa 38 colors)

Decathlon (39 colors)

Dropzone (18 colors)

Flower Mania (32 colors)

Koronis Rift (30 colors)

Marbled (29 colors)

Pitfall II (20 colors)

Rainbow Walker (34 colors)

Star Raiders II (22 colors)

-> Only playing area you have always:

5 colours on top+bottom floor

1 colour for the sky luminance

1 colour for the enemys ship's wave

2 colours (colour+luminance) for the powerups

1 colour (Missiles/PF3 5th Player mode) for the rays

1 colour for the shooting

3 colours for our main ship (P0+P1 Multicolour mode)

1 colour (BAK) black for the borders

That's 15colours (then we are almost there ;) ...)

-> On status you have:

4 colours (PF0+PF1+PF2+PF3)

5or6 colours (don't remember now) for (BAK) DLIs lines)

That's around 10colours at least

All them makes at least 25colours on screen at the same time.

:)

I came up with these just from cartridge games (except WKC, which was just a special cartridge image). There should be plenty more on disk and binary files:

Atlantis (39)
Bounty Bob Strikes Back (22)
Crossbow (19)
Demon Attack (17)
Frogger (25)
Frogger II (24)
HERO (20)
Popeye (17)
Pole Position (22)
World Karate Championship / IK (19)
Zenji (24)

X:8 (21 colors)

No.

:)

our ship: 3

shot: 1

powerups: 2

rays: 1

floors: 5

sky: 1

enemys: 1

black borders: 1

top status text: 4

This is 19, now add those DLIs lines and there's more than 25 at any time (only [2_powerups + 1_rays] if they aren't at the moment you got that but always more than yours 21).

Just to put the truth O.K. ;) ?

There is also:

Bill Kendrick's Gem Drop which uses 14 colors through Super IRG

There is also my remake of Itay's "The Wall" which uses about 50-60 colors, by swapping Graphics 12 and 11 every scanline

There is also a game being worked on by someone, can't remember the title but it is an Amiga port, that has loads of colors through DLI's.

Then of course you have the GTIA Blast game currently in development. And that Wolf 3d first person in development using the APAC mode.

To count colors, I make a screenshot and them I count them with a program.

Here is X:8 screenshot I used:

On that screen it's missing the shot, rays and the powerups that is more 4colours.

But I was just joking, O.K.? This was just to start a small war ;) ... No problem because we are at the same side!

But why 16colous? Hmm, it remembers me a particular computer and some old wars :) ...

There would be plenty. Alternate Reality / Dungeon, both variable.

Probably best not to bother with ones that use simple fading effect on background colour. 128 colours can be onscreen with not much programming effort - the ones that really excel are ones that use more complicated tricks to put more per scanline.

That brings to mind International Karate, PMG over/underlays, variable # of colours but I'd imagine in many cases would exceed 16.

Maybe not more than 16colours but Master of the lamps have the mid-scanline colours changing. And don't remember more doing it.

To be aware of the 'bad-lines' this can be used in bitmap modes like in this game GR.15 and static screens (other the same in GR.15 but sadly not finished due to Vega's lack of time it's the A8 conversion of Mikie where each guy on the classroom in each line and using the same colour register have each one different colours).

Interesting reading of many ways to get more colours and with examples of this one and many others in here:

José, could you please post an Altirra screenshot with shot, rays and powerups?

Here's one with 25 colors on screen:

The max number of colors only happens on certain levels where the positioning of enemies and obstacles is just right. This is from level 3.
