Apple IIc and Atari 1200XL...like ebony and Ivory...

Recommended Posts

After checking out the "sexiest" classic computer thread, and since I just recently got a new "L" shaped computer desk and set my IIc and 1200XL up next to each other, I thought I'd share some pictures of 2 or my top 3 picks for "most beautiful" computers sitting next to each other (the other one not shown of my picks is an Atari 800).

How about some others show their "sexiest" set-ups here too?

P.S., sorry about the blurriness of the photos, it's due to bad lighting, even with the flash and all my room lights on.

Very nice.

I happen to not like the look of any of the Atari 8-bit computers. The 130xe would be my favorite, but only because it looks like a small ST.

ST looks better to me because of the larger size and full Keyboard.

I think the coolest looking classic computer is the TI-99/4A with PEB and monitor.

I am still in need of the TI monitor, I check ebay now and then but never seem to find one.

I also like the look of the Color Computer 3 setup, with MPI and RGB monitor.

Oh man, I love my IIc. I've had it on my desk for the last 15 years (before that in storage). I only recently actually re-plugged it back in to see if it still worked. Had not powered it on in over 5 years.

I'll have to post some pics of it later.

They made Popeye for the CoCo?

Like BassGuitari said, "Sailor Man" great game too.

I attached it for disk and DW systems here:

There really is just something about a good TI-99/4A setup. Even though I've got a modern LCD on top of mine it's still way cool. Of course my PEB has dual 3.5" drives though... :D

I had originally drilled holes and mounted dual 360k 5.25 in mine. I had absolutely no use for the 2nd drive and took it out to use with a TRS-80 (I think)

I didn't recognize that Apple II at first and had to take a hard look at it -- for YEARS the way I used it at schools and friend's houses was it all stacked verticaly. You had the computer, then the two disk drives sitting on top of it, and then the monitor sitting on top of that. :)

That would be the II. II+ and IIe models, the IIc (pictured) is MUCH smaller with a drive built into the side of it, that's the second drive next to it and a monitor wouldn't fit on the IIc, they had a special stand that hung over the IIc with a small monitor on it. The monitor pictured is a color composite from the II/II+/IIe line. THAT's why you didn't recognize it. You can see the Apples that you remember pictured in the 'sexiest old computer?' thread...(page 5, Bell & Howell model Apple II, just picture it in the color of the IIc)

I decided to take one more picture of my Laser 128 Apple II series clone next to the IIc (I also have a second Mitac floppy drive for it too)

very cool. I don't know very much about the different apple II computers.

I only recently started using them over the past year or so.

I have a few IIc and a IIgs.

I knew something about Apple II's back in the early eighties, as I used them in school and begged my parents for a IIc for about a year before finally realizing that a computer was out of the question for them at that time. So I saved up myself with a paper route. But when I got to about $3-400, still not quite enough for an entire system, I read an article in one of the magazines of the day about the "new" Atari, and the ST and XE computer lines.

I realized I could have an entire Atari XE system with what I had already saved, and the 130XE had a 6502 CPU and 128K memory just like the IIc. I got the XE and never looked back to Apple until a couple years ago when I got the Lazer 128 Apple clone from a thrift shop for next to nothing. I never got around to hooking it up and then recently I was given the IIc and a bunch of other Apples (see Apple computer Bonanza thread).

So I'm just relearning Apples myself. But exactly 30 years after first wanting a IIc, I finally have one. But I'm still in love with Atari 8-bits and their far superior graphics and games line up. The 1200XL I got to finally match all my XL peripherals I had with my XE, upgraded it far beyond the XE and fell in love with it's design and keyboard. The XE was sold off.

Now, The Apple and Atari compliment each other and I look forward to enjoying both for many years to come.

I agree that both of those systems are beautiful, I actually owned both (less the PEB) for a while, but sold the Coco 3 when I needed cash. I still have a TI 99/4A but it needs a new keyboard and I have no peripherals for it yet...or anymore room for another computer yet...

But, I still prefer the look of my Atari 1200XL design over even those, and it's not Atari bias, I prefer your system's looks to the XE line from Atari.

I always like the how the classic Apple IIs (II, II+, IIe) all could have a set of drives and monitor sitting on top of them all nice and neatly. The IIgs also had a nice default setup as well.

I loved my Ataris as a kid. We had the 400, 1200XL and 65XE while growing up, but it always felt a bit awkward to position them relative to the TV (always a TV with them as a kid -- we didn't have the money to buy a dedicated monitor back then).

My favorite of all, though, was the Amiga 1000. I *loved* that it had an area to slide the keyboard under for when you weren't using it. I think it would be pretty tough to setup an A1000 and not have it look slick.

This can happen when you put two computers on the same desk. While you weren't looking, they had offspring:

When I was a tween, the computer store that carried both the ST and the Amiga had the Amiga 1000 set-up with a Sony RGB analog monitor and a set of white Bose speakers. EA's port of Marble Madness looked fantastic on it. When the Apple //gs came out, I think Apple re-sold similar white Altec Lansing speakers for it.

i loved my Apple IIc. We got it in Fall 1984. I used it until around 1998 when it started having some power issues. I wish I had kept it. I used to spend hours using Dazzle Draw. Just went on a binge looking at videos on YT of old games I used to play. Sammy Lightfoot, Conan Hall of Volta, Montezuma's Revenge, Apple Cider Spider, Hard Hat Mack, Arcade Boot Camp, Loderunner, Gremlins…. the list goes on.

Hello everyone ! I never realized that AtariAge had non atari topics :)

The most beautiful old computers, imho are the Apple II, the atari 800 (not xl), and the CBM 8032SK. I only own the two firsts (although the 800 does not work - yet ?).

It's sad the IIc is very subject to yellowing.

For those who understand french, here's a link to an article I wrote when I bought my IIe a couple months ago :

Soulblazer, you'll probably recognize this one better ;)
