Intellivisionaries: Questions For Keith Robinson

Recommended Posts

Two actual questions for Keith Robinson:

1. If an Intellivision Flashback 2 was going to be released, what would be the top 5 reasons for the masses to buy one? If you sell dozens of thousands of FB1 units, what would be the differentiators for the market to even look at an FB2?

2. Why hasn't Intellivision Productions historically released any new Intellivision(ish) games on any platform? I have heard enough Intellivisionaries podcasts to know there are programmers developers from back in the day who might contribute if contracted. Make a game, run it under emulation on iOS or Android. Profit.

-----------------------------------------------

My $.02 for the AA forum brothers and sisters:

I think that there will not be an FB2 for Intellivision. I would love to be wrong on this, but...

If Keith Robinson only accepts games from programmers or publishers that pass the criteria of (1) squeaky-cleanest history with intellectual property and (2) don't charge him exhorbitant fees for licenses, that probably leaves maybe 3 new games for an FB2. Say the FB2 emulation is improved over FB1. Say the FB2 controllers are improved somehow. None of that is enough to get the masses to go out and buy another Intellivision Flashback. Yeah, people in this forum will buy one or 3, but we ain't the masses.

If the FB1 sells 200,000 units (my SWAG) over the next 2 years, an FB2 with 6 more games on it will move 2,000 units, if that.

An FB2 would have to include all of the games from FB1, plus several not on the FB1, plus many post-2000 new games in order to have it perceived as a value to the masses. And the new inclusions would have to be quality, commercial-quality fun, and marketable: Space Patrol-yes, Paddle Party-yes, Christmas Carol-yes, Kroz-yes, Old Skool-yes, Blix-no. Maybe complete and polish unfinished games (eg Quest) for inclusion as well.

With all of that, an FB2 could only cost slightly more than an FB1.

In marketing, you sell the sizzle, not the steak.

An FB2 without sizzle is an FB2 that will never get released.

Cartridge port = steak.

21st century games = sizzle.

I may be in the minority, but the presence of some homebrew on the CVFB gives it a leg up for me

See, for me, including good homebrew games is a great idea - but they have to be -good-.

Frankly I found that, with perhaps a handful of exceptions, the homebrew and 3rd party games included with the CV FB were cruddy and even embarrassingly bad.

I would like to know why my inquiries about my Flashback overlays on their Facebook page keep getting deleted.

They did the exact same thing when I asked about my order that took them over a year to fulfill. They never responded to a single one of my emails, and I think I even left a phone message once which went ignored, so I posted on their Facebook page.

I don't think it's a coincidence that as soon as my credit card was about to expire, that's when a package abruptly showed up on my door. No apology, no nothing.

I'm really surprised at the amount of hate for Keith Robinson in this thread. Seriously, what has he done to deserve it?

Keith and Intellivision Productions are alone amongst all the retrocomputing and retrogaming platforms in actually keeping the business and the brand going as one the original people who created it. He runs a business that looks like it pays for his livelihood. Lawyers tend to be ultra-conservative, CYA types, but I can understand why Keith might be so conservative when it comes to IP issues. Just one IP lawsuit, especially from a larger, well-heeled company, could put him out of business.

A lot of talk about what did and didn't go into the Flashback sounds like random speculation. For all we know, it was ATGames calling the shots and making the decisions about what went into the Intellivision Flashback. There might have been technical issues at work; we know that some titles (like Reversi) were dropped due to emulation issues, and there's some glitches with a few of games that did ship on it.

mr_intv, I'll send you a check for $15 if it makes you feel better so that you stop crapping on this thread. If you have a problem with order fulfillment, why not try contacting Intellivision Productions directly. They left out one of my overlays by mistake. I'm not going to chase down Keith with a loaded gun over it.

_That_ is exactly the problem; there are a couple of threads running now about the lack of any response to emails from Keith's group. People have been sending them emails asking the status of orders, and there are no responses. It's not just a couple of guys complaining that the orders are a few days late; there are many folks who ordered and paid back in early December who have never received any notifications, or received shipping notifications weeks ago, and still haven't seen anything.

Ummm have you been following what I've been saying all along? It wasn't until my messages (and others) on their Facebook page were DELETED twice that I started getting upset. i wasn't even rude or anything in any of my attempts to contact them directly.

I have come to the conclusion that Keith is as crooked of a businessman as they come, even if we're only talking about minimal amounts of dollars that he "stole" from some of us.

Don't make me go over to your house and yank out the overlays I just sent you! :-D

With all due respect, you have literally no idea what you're talking about. Or perhaps this is literally your first time doing business with anyone, ever.

I mean wow, people have sold dangerous (and fatal) drugs, others have stolen BILLIONS of dollars, heck, some "businessmen" will actually put a bullet in your head if you piss them off.

But yeah, ignoring 1% of orders for a $15 overlay set and not responding to *some* inquiries is AS CROOKED AS YOU CAN GET. Hyperbole much?

And I'm STILL trying to figure out what you guys think you're accomplishing by dumping on every thread like this. You seriously think Keith ignores all your email, all your Facebook posts, but reads these?

So you're not getting a response to your emails; fair enough. But there's already a thread here on the forum to discuss those issues. What are you hoping to accomplish by dumping on this thread? Do you really expect Nurmix to use the podcast as a customer service forum to have Keith send you a set of overlays? I can't wait to listen to that.

First of all, this is hilarious. I Don't expect Nurmix to do anything. It is a mere suggestion. I would like Keith to simply respond to me. Not to delete my messages and ignore them. As I've stated before I have never been rude in any way towards Keith in my correspondence with him, a simple " we're sorry for the delay, we are working on fulfilling your order" is all I am after. Anyway, all of this has given me an idea for my next give-away contest.

Oh oh. I'm getting a feeling that you didn't receive your overlays but you did receive Eric's and now you're going to give them away? :)

Now THIS post... I'll definitely make sure Keith sees.

By the way, if he really is a crooked as they come, why'd you put stole in quotes?

Hello, Keith! How’ve you been?!

Would you happen to have copies of the rules booklets (instruction manuals) for the TUTORVISION system and its games?! If you do, please upload them onto Google Drive. Would I have your permission to (then) create archival materials—overlays, rules booklets, and box designs—for each of the TUTORVISION’s white-cased learning/educational game cartridges?!

I know that you’re still waiting to officially release the TUTORVISION system and game .ROMs... but, have you been inquired to have your TUTORVISION work polished up for eventual inclusion into new INTELLIVISION product releases?

From what I previously heard, NONE of the TUTORVISION games had any original overlays—I could design these (as well as—hopefully—their box designs and manuals).

Thank You!
