Skylanders Swap Force Question

I picked up a brand new starter package of Skylanders Swap Force for $20 on XboxOne. I played the original Skylanders on the Wii and enjoyed it but skipped Giants completely.

Before getting too far into the game, I am curious: does anyone know how many actual Swap Force Figures you need to purchase to finish the game and get 100% on each level?

In playing the first level, I was unable to open one gate because the starter pack didn't come with a Skylander with the "Dig" ability. And since I didn't find all the "hats" on this level or discover all the "worlds/lands", I'm guessing the last things I need are behind this gate. But these Swap Force figures are $15 each and this could get expensive!

But, on the other hand, I was able to open another gate on the same first level by using one of my original Spyro's Adventure skylanders because he was of the undead element which was required to open the gate. So that saved me having to spend money for another character.

But, on the other hand, on the same opening level, I came across a box and to open it I needed a Skylander Giant, which I don't have. More money to spend???

So I guess my question is, what is the mimimum amount one has to spend to get 100% on the game? I have a Skylander with every element from the first game, but that's about it.

Even though I got the starter pack at a low, low price and the games seems fun, I really don't want to spend $150+ to completely finish the game with 100%.

Most of the stuff is petty things anyways. Like you said, you'll miss a hat, or miss opening a chest that gives you some gems.

Seriously not worth spending the $$$ unless you just HAVE to have 100% level completion.

I wouldn't sweat it, you can still get all the achievements without getting 100% on levels.

Wait until Skylanders Trap Team is released, then Swap Force figures will become cheaper. Or try getting them second hand, they often get traded in at game stores.

You should only need to get one giant.

Our family started with Giants and we got a lot of figures for $5 each because stores were selling off the old Spyros Adventure stock. Then I found a second hand copy of the Spyros Adventure game.

People complain that these games are just a money grab but the games are great fun and I've spent lots of money on toys that do nothing whereas these toys come to life ;-)

Thanks for the response, guys! Much appreciated.

How many of the Swap Force figures do each of you have?

I thought I might pick up a couple of the Swap-power figures, i.e. Grilla Drilla and Stink Bomb, since Target was having a Buy 2 - Get 1 Free sale. But the two stores I went to had no Swap-power figures at all, just the regular SF figures like Roller Brawl and Countdown. I passed on those regular figures.

I have about 11 of the swap force figures. Most bought when they had deals like you mentioned. I think it was buy one get one 50% off, some I bought just plain 50% off because they had fallen off the cards. They are pretty cool figures in that you can upgrade both the top and the bottom very similar to an individual smaller figure.

I'll admit I am peeved they are releasing yet another portal with the latest Skylanders games, Skylanders Trap Team. The figures I don't mind so much, storing and having to swap out portals is a drag.

Yeah the storing is getting tough. I cant find much more room to put this stuff. I beat the game with my kid and I have about 4 swap figures and I think I bought 8 or so of the normal figures. We used figures from the old sets too to unlock areas etc. The game was pretty good, got repetitive towards the end but really well done as usual. .

I would have figured you would only need one of each elemental type like the original game. Sure you'd never get the stuff character spacific, but the over all game was completely accessable with only 5 aditional characters. (the original came with three, and you needed one for all eight elements)

Is this different for the newer games? I bought a good chunk of the characters anyways, but there was only a few I opened to play with (though technically, you could work it without opening the package)

Yeah you only need one of each type and you can even unlock portals with series one characters etc. It all works. They did a good job of supporting people who have lots of the older figures and want to use them. Its a thumbs up for me.

i have complete collections of the first two games and then forced myself to stop buying when the third game was released. i don't even have the starter pack. i'm curious how far one could get in the third game with only figures from the previous two titles. too bad there's no New-Disc-Only option.

I beat the entire game using three of the new characters and two swap characters (new) to unlock some swap portals. Five figures.

I unlocked a lot of the portals (side areas) in the game with series 1 and series 2 figures as well. The big tree guy from series 2 and whatever element I was missing from the new series.

In the end I felt like I missed very little even if I didn't have that many figures. Most of those side areas simply contain collectibles (hats and other items) to complete your collection of stuff. None of it relates to the main game or "storyline".

Basically you wont miss much if you dont have a lot of figures but if you play these games to collect everything then you will need to buy figures.

Really interesting reading and info; thanks to all for posting.

Not complaining, just a random thought: if the Swap figures are $15 each and only open a small area that might take 5min (based on the couple portals I did open) to complete, doesn't that make these the most expensive DLC ever?

Oh yes for sure it can get crazy expensive if you buy them all....I got yelled at, actually was told (not asked) not to buy anymore from my wife. :P

In my opinion its not worth buying the big swap figures unless your a collector (its very tempting). If you have a couple that's good enough to get through the game and use your old figures too.

You couldn't even play without the new portal. I think they did that as an anti-piracy measure more than anything. If you bought a portal off ebay for like $10 you would

be good to go.
