NE146
Meh.. I learned long ago about the "color" and/or design variations being useless to me in the Nintendo world. New coat of paint.. not interested. Edited September 11, 2014 by NE146
Flojomojo
Suddenly due to account lockdowns, owning limited editions or multiple consoles becomes less appealing... I don't think Nintendo cares if you own multiple 3DS units, so long as you keep on buying them.
Andromeda Stardust
I don't think Nintendo cares if you own multiple 3DS units, so long as you keep on buying them. But what's the point in owning multiple 3DS editions if you can only play your games on one of them? I sold my DSi and launch black 3DS a couple years ago for this exact reason. I still kept my DS phat and Classic NES edition GBA as well as the original sideways GBA purple edition. I'm not buying a limited edition 3DS unless I plan on gaming with it. Then when the next 3DS upgrade comes out and I transfer my software, it becomes worthless for gaming. Flojomojo
Everything you said is true. All I'm saying is that when people buy new Nintendo hardware, Nintendo gets paid. They don't care what you do with it. I suspect many 3DSes get handed down to younger kids in families. Having cartridges to pass around makes sense in this context. I wish they'd be like Apple and let you share their expensive downloaded software.
cimerians
XL is still king http://www.destructoid.com/the-new-3ds-xl-outsold-the-regular-model-almost-three-times-over-in-japan-282580.phtml
thegamezmaster
I don't understand why Nintendo is releasing all these different models now if their going to release an upgraded one next year.
Andromeda Stardust
XL units are popular, no surprize there. They also fit well in adult hands, moreso for white and black American males alike who in general have larger hands than Asians. Just look at the "phablet" phenomenon going on right now in the US. People getting mobile phones with bigger and bigger touch screens. IMO, the miniaturization trend that overwelmed consumer products between 2000-2010 is over. For a whole decade, it was smaller and smaller phones, tiny iPod speakers that sound like sh**, small devices, cosmetics, all-in-one multipurpose tools with no real leverage, etc were getting smaller and crappier. I still remember seeing the GBA Micro and laughing. Even the GBA-SP was hand-crampingly small for my man hands. Either way, I'm Glad to see this miniaturization trend die, especially in Japan where space is at an extreme premium.

cimerians
Well the new one will be out next month... strangely will not come with an AC adapter, anyone getting it? http://kotaku.com/new-3ds-officially-announced-for-next-month-1679427633 After watching the video, those are all features I wanted on the original to begin with. WTF Nintendo. Seems like they give us things little by little just to keep buying.
AtticGamer
I like the regular New 3DS, with its SNES buttons and slightly bigger screen. Even though I like a bigger screen, the regular 3DS screen rarely feels small to me, but the bigger the screen, the better. I still need to play on an XL to see if the screen size is worth it or if the pixel density is too low for my tastes. One thing they didn't improve enough was the camera, which is deeply disappointing. It has a better management of highlights, but it's still a crude, noisy 0.3MP sensor. They could have sprung up for a Wii U style camera (0.7MP) which is a little better but still cheap enough. I wouldn't mind a good 0.3MP sensor, but those sensors nowadays are made to be cheap and the overall image is crap, regardless of the resolution. It's a shame, because I like taking photos and filming in 3D with it, but it's really limited with its current quality. Bilnick
Unless you can charge it via a standard USB cable, it seems odd that it doesn't come with an ac adapter.
AtticGamer
I think it was standard practice back in the day...in Japan. Handhelds before didn't come with AAs either, nor a charger, GBA SP was probably the first Nintendo console to have it.

Reaperman
Well the new one will be out next month... strangely will not come with an AC adapter, anyone getting it? Yeah, I think I am. I haven't had a 3ds before and this feels like the 'final form' of the system. I still haven't decided which model yet. I usually go for the smallest version of a handheld, but I've never had an XL, and it's more than a little tempting. I'm not a huge fan of dual screen systems in general, but the 3ds hardware has always seemed somewhat neat to me. I wish there were more 'old man' kinds of games for me on it, but as I understand, I'm not exactly the device's target market. While I'm waiting for the system's release, I've started hitting ebay for a few of the titles that interest me most. Bravely Default and Shadow Wars both seem neat. Not 'killer app' neat, but enough to get me started. Even if I'm not in line immediately at launch, I've pretty well already decided that at some point I will own a 3ds, and don't see much reason to go for an older model. NE146
I'm buying it.. but I'm a sucker. I have (and still have) pretty much every iteration of the GB/GBA/DS lines and can't think to ever get rid of even one.. I think though what has me excited is the improved 3D field of vision. I'm actually a fan of the 3D in some games.. I think it's pretty cool for playing Starfox 64 on the 3DS for example. However in real play I was disappointed since you easily lose the "sweet spot" when you due to natural movement, so I ended up turning off the 3D by necessity. This looks like it should fix that somewhat.. I'm interested to see how it actually works in real life.
Austin
Damnit.. Nintendo announced the newer Sega 3D classics are coming to the US, including After Burner II, Out Run, Thunder Blade, and Fantasy Zone. I guess I might have to buy one of these after all. Unbeliever
I think at this time I'll pass on the unit. I have invested pretty heavily into my regular-sized 3DS (covers, cases, accessories, etc.) and I really don't want to start over again. Besides, I'm not "big" on the XL, and that's the only one they're offering right now. If a smaller one (light) comes out later, then yeah, probably. But for now, my regular 3DS will suit me just fine.
+SpiceWare
I still need to play on an XL to see if the screen size is worth it or if the pixel density is too low for my tastes. I had the original 3DS. When the XL came out I checked it out and found that the 3D effect worked significantly better. So I picked one up and, after transferring my eShop games, handed the old one down to my nephew.

I kinda figured that out back in the original DS days when they went original DS -> lite -> XL -> DSi -> DSi lite .. yeah, it pretty much formed a pattern. Sadly for them, I don't have anything newer than the original DS which still works like a champ, and I ain't going to be paying for a separate charger, so... yeah, they've found the magic formula for self destructing profit margins. They save a couple bucks on an adapter, I save a couple hundred for something else. Win, win scenario nintendo. We both get what we want out of the deal. Atariboy
The SD slot on this thing is internal. You'll first have to go through these steps when removing or inserting your SD card. Wonder what they were thinking. I hope that nobody actually uses these for their camera or mp3 player, since I could see this being extremely annoying. Thankfully for the gamer, it should be a minimum of hassle. Edited January 16, 2015 by Atariboy
Major Havoc 2049
I have a launch 3DS, so I think it's time for an upgrade. I'm going to get the Monster Hunter 4 limited edition. The new Zelda limited edition is already sold out. I haven't tried out the demo yet of Monster Hunter 4, but I read there are frame rate issues in multiplayer on a regular 3DS, but they aren't as bad with the extra power of the New 3DS. The New 3DS version of Xenobalde looks cool as well and that can only be played on the New 3DS.

omegadot
I tend not to mind all the editions as they are all compatible and just have different features. This one has such an incremental increase in features and another subset of games that is just seems likely to confuse things. I don't see myself jumping on this one. Andromeda Stardust
Unless you can charge it via a standard USB cable, it seems odd that it doesn't come with an ac adapter. I have a USB -> DSi/3DS charging cable that originally came with an unlicensed 3DS charging grip. I never needed one for my xL as the battery has sufficient charge time. I've never attempted to use the USB charging cable since it supplies 5.0V instead of 4.6. Although I doubt a 9% overvolt would damage the 3DS, I don't want to take chances. I am excited for the New 3DS xL though. I have the black model on preorder since the Selda edition was OOS. Shame as it would have gone nicely with my limited edition MM with the skullkid figure.
