Intellivision Flashback Controller Adapters

Recommended Posts

I got some made this weekend. I will post a list of all those who requested cables here later this week. It will be in the order received.

Those at the top of the list will be getting cables soon (I'll be contacting those people shortly for shipping and payment information).

I'm getting some orders through email now too, as Intellivision Productions posted a link to our page on the Intellivisionaries site about the adapters.

It's currently a one man operation, but I am working to get batches made as soon as I can. Thanks again for your interest, and your patience!

It is a great service you are providing I am sure everyone is more than appreciative. I am kind of looking forward to the prospect of putting the flashback controller on my 2609, although I haven't hammered out exactly how that is going to go.

That's next. I just don't want to sacrifice an original controller cable to make one. I need to source some internal [motherboard] cable connectors.

I think the ideal way would be to make a short breakout cable from the motherboard that ends in a male DB9, and comes out the existing controller cable holes.

Of course the end user would still have to open up their consoles, remove the old cables [controllers], and plug in the breakout cables. Then they could plug their Flashback controllers into the breakout cables.

Seems like Willie may need to make a reverse adapter too (to use the original Coleco controllers on the Flashback) so he can use the Amiga controllers they always talk highly of. I may have used a CV once in my life before so I have no frame of reference on which to base an opinion.

Well..... I have good news and bad news...... good news is I was able to get a original colecovision controller to work on the flashback and vice versa. The bad news?..... Keypad is not compatible. The original colecovision controller uses a 7 pin interface to the colecovision with the keyboard encoding done via diodes in the controller. The ColecoVision flashback uses a 9 pin interface to the flashback where part of the keyboard decoding is being done internally in the flashback and not the controller. I can easily make a adapter to create a "arcade" joytsick with two buttons to work on either systems, its that dang keyboard interface that is gumming up the works right now.

I am still trying while being cost effective :)

Thanks to all who listen to the podcast :)

Wow. That's a real shame. Nice work sorting that out though, Willie. Given all of these issues, combined with the not quite right overlay size, it seems any thoughts of controller compatibility went out the window in the early design phase. Edited by nurmix

What is sad is they were sent a actual ColecoVision console and they still screwed it up. Overlays not compatible with original hardware, controllers not compatible and cant be made compatible with a simple adapter harness like the intelly can, JoyNub (tm Nurmix) to short, right and left fire buttons swapped.

Its just plain sad considering how well they did on the Intellivision version.

To be fair, Intellivision Productions is more hands-on and directly knowledgeable than any of the other licensors, so it's not surprising there are fewer issues (though issues obviously creeped in there as well, which again is a side effect of the development process). I've been promised I'll be more involved in testing if there's a next ColecoVision Flashback, so I'll certainly try and squash as many of the issues as I can. I've already been reiterating the need for a redesigned controller.

hope so, I already have been talking to Mark at Coleco Holdings LLC about it as well. if they wanted some good input they could have gotten you more involved or the group on Atariage.

Definitely, though as we discussed, it's a balance of intention versus time. They had great intentions that certainly got compromised along the way due to less and less time to make fixes. At the very least, we can hope now that the foundation of the hardware/software is in place, there will be more time for the other things, like fine tuning, bug fixes, etc. I don't think any of us are expecting perfection in a $40 package, but we do certainly expect improvements between iterations.

Here's the list of all the Atari Age (and CGE) folks who want cables, and the quantity desired. If I left anyone out, or didn't put in a quantity, or in some other way screwed up something on the list, either post here or send me a PM. The list is in the order received, with time/date stamps included. I'll be going down the list in order processing requests.

Note: I'm also receiving email requests for cables through The Intellivisionaries website, which I have not yet added to this list, but I will asap. Most likely these are folks who found out about the adapter cables through Intellivision Productions Flashback FAQ page, or the podcast.

I'm making the cables as quickly as I can, so your patience is appreciated! I will be contacting users as the cables are made, for shipping and payment information. Thanks, guys!
