metzger130
Does anybody know/have tried to use a sd card with rom files that you would use on your computer in the new genesis portable? I am looking at getting one but if I can just put all my games on an sd card and play anytime then it is almost a must buy. +save2600
Yep, that's the whole idea behind the SD card. Might have to place the ROMs in a folder titled Games though.
Chilly Willy
Just remember that the AtGames consoles are pure crap. There's a reason most people call them ShatGames. I consider the AtGames handhelds to be just good enough and cheap enough to warrant giving one to a little kid to play Genesis games on. They are NOT for adults who would take care of a more expensive handheld. For example, an adult would MUCH rather have a PSP with a Genesis emulator than the ShatGames. A GP2X or similar running an emulator would also be a better purchase for an adult. I suppose if you were going on vacation and were worried about losing your handheld, the ShatGames handheld would be cheap enough that you wouldn't care if it were lost or stolen. That would be about the only reason to get one.
metzger130
Reason I asked is I saw on the webpage that it says to go to a website to download games, so I wasn't sure if regular roms would work or if it only took special roms. As far as at games being not great, I have the Intellivision flashback and love it. Controller feels better than the originals and I plan on purchasing an adapter that will connect the controllers to a regular console. yes, the sound is not perfect but it tis still good and very enjoyable. I have yet to play my Coleco flashback system as it is a birthday present and hasn't "officially" been given to me yet, it's sitting on the kitchen table mocking me. I know it is not quite as good as the Intellivision one as people have said, but it has a fwe games that are hard to find/expensive for the system that I can enjoy til I can get a flashcart and they are very portable which is wonderful for going on a trip. Whole reason I was looking at the sega was that I could play my whole library without the need of a TV.
OldSchoolRetroGamer
Button placement is weird and sound production very poor actually. If these things do not bother you or you consider them tolerable then I guess you are good to go. That said, since you are using ROMS anyway you are better of with just about any handheld with Genesis emulation from PSP to GP2x Caanoo or even ANDROID. Hell even a a320 Dingoo is better plus you can emulate much more with one of those.
metzger130
I've heard of a PSP and i have an android phone, the rest of those i have no idea what you are talking about. GP2x? 320 Dingoo? Are those in the US?
Chilly Willy
Yes. Just google for them and you'll find plenty of places selling them. Not anything like Best Buy, but online places.
Manoau2002
I personally would go with an nvidia shield for a personal emulation device. It can run emulators from Atari 2600 to PlayStation and N64. (Maybe even GameCube/Wii at some point) Only downside is it's higher priced then those other options but you get what you pay for. Flojomojo
Agreed about the Nvidia Shield, it's wonderful, but remember that it's $200 and the size of a triple cheeseburger. The Atgames Genesis is $40 and fits in your pocket. It runs nearly every ROM and looks good (way better than a Sega Nomad, for example) even though the sound is not great. I get the sense that they're still selling the same device as four years ago, without improvements to the sound quality, is that correct? Flojomojo
btw you need to have the ROMs in a certain format. It's no big deal though, they're easy to find.

Is that true with the portable device? Because that's not the case with the Sega Flashback console and the Passport SD cartridge. Takes every format I've thrown at it. Flojomojo
I think it's the same tech as those. .smd and .bin should be fine. Zips will need to be extracted. No big deal.
Chilly Willy
The latest AtGames use a slightly updated emulator that fixed a few graphics bugs, but still has crappy audio. What I want is a way to do native games on them. Instead of using a crappy emulator, have native games using the full power of the arm processor. metzger130
Can someone suggest something to buy instead of the at games device that would be around 100 and not 200? I would like to have something portable but not going to pay 200 for it.

I would like to have something portable but not going to pay 200 for it.You could get a psp for a lot less then 100. A dingoo sells for about a hundred. The shield is really the way to go however. Besides being able to play just about any system or computer up to the PlayStation it is a full fledge android tablet and there are games that only work on the shield (on android or any other portable device) like Portal and Half-Life 2. Also Nvidia is a very reputable company.
Place Logo Here
Although I already have a Genesis, but am still going to get one of the AtGames portables so that I can hopefully play homebrews, hacks and rarities. But where can I find a collection of ROMs (preferably in bin format)? I have seen a bunch of sites recommended, but all of them seem pretty dodgy so far: either endless ads when you try to click the download button for a rom (and never actually receiving the download) or ones where you simply "download this easy to use app!" that screams "malware" in about three mile high neon letters. I am not sure of the rules when it comes to discussing where to get Rom files. (Some forums really crack down on it) But let's say that torrrent files are the way to go for a large collection of roms.
