S1500
The one I like, gaminghistorysource has no spoken word, and barely any intro. They just show footage of the same game ported across several systems. That's it. No "100000 subscriber special" or internet syndrome stuff. fiddlepaddle
Unless a video is 15 seconds or less, it takes too long; I want to read an opinion of quality, novelty, maybe some simple pointers. My purpose is either to decide if I want to try it, or if my opinion (from playing) matches the concensus. Either way, I don't need much detail or pointless, generic nothingness that sucks up my time. The only exception is that rare game (3 or 4, ever) that I'm really into on a continuing basis. Pixelboy
I really like Highretrogamelord's work. When I want to have another look at a particular Atari 2600 game, I always look for his videos first.
The Usotsuki
Remember Sturgeon's law. 90% of everything is crud, and YT is no exception.
LynxVGL
So much of this thread is dead on. I pretty much only reliably watch ClassicGameRoom as YT gaming videos. 65GamerGuy has a nice series on Colecovision titles, but those are pretty it for me. The number of clueless guys who love to mindlessly trash 2600 or Inty games with no clue about what they are actually playing is beyond annoying. And pretty much 99% of those videos are so laden with stupid and pointless profanity that I turn them off right away. Nothing lowers my opinion of one of these "reviewers" as when they start to swear left and right over games. Play-throughs are next on my annoyance list. Watching a PIP of these knuckleheads as they ramble aimlessly through games trying to keep a running monolog going is painful. PewdiePie is the worst. I don't get why/how he can have so many followers. Wait, I do. My son loves to watch his terrible videos all the time, and now feels the need to monolog (or attempt to at least) through every game he's playing. Annoying does not begin to describe it. gamecat80
All of these reviewers have personalities and styles that make themselves felt over the course of their videos, but aren't the subject of the videos, which makes a world of difference. And I'll take self-conscious/deliberate dorkiness, à la Nice and Games's dryly nerdy wit, any day over reviewers who are trying to be cool and show off their 'tude (as it were). Nice and Games is probably my overall favorite video game reviewer on YT. I really like his style; it's a shame he doesn't have more viewers because he does a great job. Classic Game Room is up there for me, too. Croooow has some good, funny gameplay vids up also. Edited December 18, 2014 by gamecat80
vintagegamecrazy
One thing that I live by is if a reviewer starts reading the the entire description of the game's or console's box then it's time to hit the back button. Seriously though, why do so many think that that will make your review better?
TheGameCollector
Someone needs to make a shameless video of them reviewing all the video game reviewers they have seen. Call it "Reviewing the reviewer" series. I bet that would take off quite virally.
ovalbugmann
I love having lots of video game reviews to choose from, i don't mind it at all, yeah there are stupid ones out there, naive ones, bad speakers, volume too low, too much background noise, reading the back of the box - slowly , getting the facts wrong, jaguar bashing, etc. but i don't hold it against them if i don't agree with their take or assessment of the game and or system. Much of the time I am learning something interesting about the game from them. They are valuable for purchases I might be planning to make. I also like game walkthroughs. 4Ks
I have my own personal set of red flags for video reviews. - Elaborate title sequences. You are not on network television, you don't need a big flashy logo. - Long, rambling intros. If you take more than one minute to get to the point, I will take my viewing elsewhere. This is, after all, a review, not a vlog. - Generic chiptune music playing in the background. You don't get geek points for constantly reminding me how totally retro-cool you are. Especially not if you're reviewing a modern game. - Schizophrenic editing. Often done as a cover for inept acting, and it's annoying as hell to watch. - Constant screaming, excessive vulgarity, and needless hyperbole. I blame the AVGN and his ilk for convincing the world that acting like an obnoxious, hyperactive child is the essence of humor. At least for him it was an act, many of his imitators give me the impression that they actually are that juvenile and feeble-minded IRL. - Weak commentary/unwillingness to actually talk about the game. Many reviewers are just doing it for the attention; they don't actually give a rat's ass about the games. You can always spot these types because they spend all their time spouting off lame gags and hypercritiquing insignificant aspects of the game instead of presenting an informed opinion on it. - Like this video and subscribe to my channel! I specifically don't subscribe to channels that resort to this kind of begging because I don't want to validate their attention whoring.
Gregory DG
I pretty much watch the review for the REVIEWER, not so much the game anymore. CGR and LGR (Lazy Game Reviews) are funny and informative. And AVGN has lost some of his over-the-top humor, but I still enjoy watching him (and when he does his James & Mike Play videos.) Oh, and Game Sack is pretty great too. Edited December 24, 2014 by Gregory DG
