External 5.25 disk drive read issue!

Recommended Posts

I have been the 5.25 drive in the picture with no problems. Suddenly it can not ready any disks including the ones I was using about 30 minutes earlier. Now I just get the 'startup disk' error when I boot the IIgs.

I have tried a new 5.25 clean disk with solution but it will still not read. What else can I do to fix this issue?

Thanks!

Cleaning the head is my first thought also even though I tried the cleaning disk.

How the heck does the case come off? I took off the screws and it does not slide off from the front.

Top and bottom separate by lifting the top off of the bottom.

Did you try checking the cable like I mentioned in #3? You can do the same thing inside the drive, too. And the head connector, too, is worth a check. Better than disassembling the drive fully. Easy stuff. Next step is to remove and reseat the ICs.

Got the case off.. did not realize they were attached like they were.

I cleaned the head and it looked spotless anyways.. still not working. All cables seem tight... hm...

Sometimes a disk will start to load and then I get very load sounds from the drive (not normal).. after a few of these I get I/O error.. Sound familiar?

Thanks!

I bought an original Disk ][ on eBay a few years ago. It would usually boot, then stop working.

Turns out, there were Foam Peanuts inside the Drive... They would Jam the Head. Also, possible the Rails need some lubrication..
