Seob
This Saturday i had a decent haul at the thrift shop. Found a very dirty Nes, with 2 controllers. Hatch and power supply missing. Came with a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. Together with 2 Gus compatible 16 bit isa sound cards. Total 10 euro. I just can't find the manufacturer of the sound card. One of the 2 cards comes with a Promise 27256 bios chip installed. The other card lacks this rom. I guess this is only for the onboard ide controller. If i'm correct both cards are fitted with 1 Mb ram IC's, U1 and U2 are the fixed 512Kb ram and U3 and U4 seem to be the extra 512 Kb memory banks. The main sound IC's are the Gravis GF1 and the Advanced Gravis GF1D1. So i think it's a Ultrasound Classic. On the backside of the board, etched into it it says 'Ultrapromise-2' searching for this, only leads to Promise Ultra-66 ide controllers. Searching for Promise Technology on the Bios chip also leads to IDE controllers only. On the front the board says 'Amigo', but searching for this leads me to Turtle Beach USB sound cards. Searching for 'UT-8D 94V-0' leads to pci ethernet cards. There are no FCC codes on the board so i cannot search for this. It's not a original card, since they are red. Tried searching on Vogons but it's not listed there. Yesterday i tried to install the card, but my Fujitsu Ergopro e452 doesn't free my DMA channels, so i couldn't get it running. Had the same problem with a Creative isa sound card so i think the problem isn't the sound card. So anyone who knows this card?
MarkO
Promise Technologies ( The Name on the EEPROM ), made Hard Drive Controllers.. It appears to be a Clone of a Gravis. MarkO Edited January 5, 2015 by MarkO
Seob
Looks like i solve the problem with the card not running. Took an other PC with 95, and had the same problem running the Gravis. I then delete the drive, installed dos 6.22, ran the setup and now it works. However, it MOST DEFINITELY has the Gravis Ultrasound components and the GF1 chip on it. Like MarkO said, it's probably some sort of Gravis Ultrasound CLONE that was made for an OEM... like maybe IBM (before they went with the Crystal MIDI) or Packard Bell or something. Another thing worth noting, you have THREE sets of ram chips on there. In the middle on the far left of the car, you have a pair of memory chips, looks like 80 nano-seconds speed... and look like they are 256 chips. Not sure if that means the two together make 256k, or if each one is 256k. Then on the top, you have two removable ram chips that are 100 nano-second chips, also 256k chips. But then at the bottom, also on the left, you have another ram chip presumeably a 512k chip, running at 70 nano-seconds. The Gravis Ultrasound is pretty awesome... and there are some games that use its sample-processor natively that don't even require drivers so long as you have the IRQ/DMA/ADDRESS set properly. Once you get it configured so there's no conflict (use Norton Utilities for DOS to verify any conflicts), install Star Control 2 and just listen to how ridiculously clear EVERYTHING is. If you think you may want to use one of them... I would recommend upgrading the 100ns chips at the top with 70 or 80 ns chips. It will greatly improve the loading and response capability of the sound card. You can get those chips pretty fast. Looks like you have 1.5mbs on those cars... if I had to guess.
Seob
Mem test shows only 1 mb. The ultrinit tool shows ultrasound with ics. will look if i have other mem chips. I know it isn't a original gus hence the title.

It is possible, that Promise Technologies, was buying the Gravis Chips, from Gravis and building these for a certain OEM.. Basically, if Gravis didn't have the capacity to Build completed Cards, they could have Licensed, or Sold the Key Components to Promise Technologies to Build.. A Classic Example with the WW II "Jeep", designed by American Bantam, but due to Production Limitations, was built by Willys and Ford. MarkO That was my guess, it was a production run of cards using GUS chips but for an OEM. All Gravis cards were red, that was kind of their "thing." But, doesn't make a difference though because it's basically an Ultrasound , and as far as the computer knows... it's an Ultrasound.
