I put together an Apple II review you all might enjoy. I did it in part because there really aren't too many in-depth reviews of that computer (which is quite surprising!) and also as an excuse to show off some of my collection ;). It mainly focuses on the original model, but also shows software supported by the platform in general, whether it requires 4K or 128K of RAM.

It was fun to make and most of the challenge was deciding on what key events, features and innovative peripherals to focus on. Also deciding which games to show during that segment. I left out a lot of classics, but I can only fit so many in such a short time.

Enjoy!

Watching it now.

- That's a sweet Beagle Bros. t-shirt.

- Awesome collection of computers, and I like how you have the shelf set up for them.

- I have an original II as well, but my serial number ain't that low.

- I didn't know that piece of trivia about The Terminator. That's awesome.

Overall an excellent video, and I'm going to subscribe so that I don't miss another. Do you use emulation to record computer footage, or a capture device?

good stuff

Thanks!

It appears that you got the Big Name Games... And VisiCalc... ;)

Oh yes, we mustn't forget VisiCalc!

Watched this yesterday when it popped up on my subscribed video list. Really good stuff and i enjoyed your mixing in of little personal details with the main story.

It was cool discovering my dad's connection to Beagle Bros. Small world.

Emulation. All the capture devices I've seen produce major color bleeding on Apple II games. If you have any recommendations, I'm definitely wanting a good solution.

Hahah, no. That's exactly why I was asking you. I haven't been able to find a good solution for capturing non-HD video that doesn't involve me setting up a dedicated computer with a capture card. Right now I use a DVD recorder (like a VCR but with DVDs instead of tapes), then pop the DVD into my computer and rip it. Actually does a really awesome job, but being able to capture the video directly on my computer would be so much easier. Never tried it with an Apple II but it works great with all of my old video game consoles, and since it also has a pre-digital TV tuner built in, I can record RF sources as well.

Damn it! I want my Apple IIe back now.

That's how I felt after watching that, as well. I had a //c+ and a IIgs and I got rid of them both. I still have my plain old II but it's so old. I don't think it can play a lot of the latter games. And the keyboard on it is shitty. I think it needs a serious DeOxit bath.

I actually just want a //c. One 5.25" floppy drive is all I need.

the second I score a deal on a Macintosh PDS apple IIe enhanced card for less than a princess ransom I will be putting up my 1986 via serial number rom 255 original apple IIC up for sale

its going to be cheap, I scored the machine a few years ago mustard yellow and broken for 17 bucks shipped half way cross the country

retro brighted it, heck that was like 6 years ago went from mustard yellow, to brand new to meh beige now

repaired the motherboard with jumper wires, works like a champ outside of the joystick port, its fubar ... disk drive works like brand new

cheapest deal on the bay for a PSD apple IIe card is like 100 bucks minus disk drive / joystick cable .. I have one the handful of macs that work with it already so if you have a card and no mac, and a desire for a working apple IIC + serial cable + virtual serial host, somewhat compatible fake hard drive box PM ME!

serious PDS apple II card for apple IIC ill fix the darn joystick port... have parts, just been lazy

Just wanted to update by saying that this thread has now cost me over $100. I bought an Apple IIc ($75 shipped) and a part to repair my original Apple II, which didn't end up solving the problem. So if anyone knows someone with a keyboard encoder chip for an Apple II or II+ keyboard (the version WITHOUT the daughterboard) let me know.

On the plus side, I've been having great fun using BASIC to draw NES sprites using LORES graphics . Did Mario, Luigi, and Mega Man so far. Might get super fancy and program a self-booting slideshow disk.
