Nebulon
I've got a Commodore 128 but no disk drive. What would you recommend for an alternative to a disk drive? I'm thinking of something that's fast, inexpensive, easy to use, and supports SD cards or USB sticks. 98PaceCar
2 good options. Uiec if you don't want full compatibility or 1541u if you do. Uiec is cheap, 1541u is not. I have both and vastly prefer the 1541u. Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/235917-commodore-128-question/#findComment-3191855 Share on other sites

There is the cousin to the uIEC -- the many variations of the SD2IEC. As for the 1541 Ultimate II, there are compatibility issues with it and the C128. carlsson
In order to get decent speed with SD2IEC or uIEC/SD, you should also get a turbo loader cartridge of some sorts, or install JiffyDOS into the C128. Some of the better cartridges to use would be The Final Cartridge III or Action Replay Mk 5 or newer. In the latter case, you need to configure the uIEC/SD with a 1581 ROM file so AR thinks it is talking with a 1581 and uses appropriate speed loading routines. Easy of use, perhaps there are some menu programs you could install that will help you traverse the directories. I'm also thinking about what you could do with an EasyFlash 1 or 3, but those don't take SD or USB. There also are a slew of brand new utility cartridges for the C64/128 under development, but I don't know if those are meant for general purpose or to solve very particular cases, i.e. cartridges that only can be used to host a multitude of small cartridge images. Since the C64/128 never really was a gaming console, but instead gaming computers, many solutions tend to simulate floppy drives which on the Commodore rarely or never were automatically bootable, which makes it slightly less ease of use than a multicart for an entirely cartridge based, bank switching system. I'm thinking of something that's fast, inexpensive, easy to use, and supports SD cards or USB sticks. A device I use is this: http://www.retroswitch.com/products/flyer/ It connects like a disk drive to the Commodore and you can either a) download a disk from the internet b) use a PC on your internal network to host the disk for download by the Flyer. It comes without a case, but there was a run of metal cases produced for them a while back. Perhaps they will be made again if there is enough interest. One thing I should mention, they are not really trying to emulate the drive hardware like a Chameleon 64 or 1541U2, so keep that fact in mind. The main reason I like this device is that it doesn't occupy one of ports (expansion or user) other than the IEC port and if you have other devices you can just daisy chain them like normal. I thought mine was defective until I messed with the timings. The 1541 Ultimate is amazing and if you can afford it then go for it. Otherwise you can pick up one of those SD2IEC on ebay that look like mini 1541's. I havent used them but they look cool http://www.ebay.com/itm/Commodore-64-128-1541-Disk-Drive-Emulation-SD2IEC-SD-Card-Reader-/261865036212?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3cf85f59b4 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/235917-commodore-128-question/#findComment-3226203 Share on other sites

That said, I have just ordered this neat little device. Ever since I first saw this on www.amibay.com a year ago, I have wanted one. Now they are fairly easy to buy. http://www.retrocollect.com/News/sd-card-loading-uk1541-adapter-announced-for-commodore-64.html Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/235917-commodore-128-question/#findComment-3287219 Share on other sites
