Is there any interest in a 7800er Database? We are thinking about expand the existing 2600 Database and add 7800 Titles.
I would like to hear your opinion on the need, to balance priorities in our project.

Because my knowledge of atari 7800 is not very good, so i would like to know from you, are there visible differences between PAL and NTSC boxes and carts, or is the only visible difference the Instructions.

Sure, I can check if it is a PAL or NTSC Cart, but i would like to save me this work. Easier would be to know a visible difference.

Some feedback would be very helpful.

Here are some general guidelines - There are, of course, always exceptions/mistakes made...

First party 7800 games:
Boxes:
An NTSC box states in the fine/small print: "Printed in Hong Kong/Made in China".
A PAL box states, "Made in China" only.
Additionally, later first party titles have a "NEW" ribbon on the front of NTSC boxes only. However, the same NTSC title may appear without the "NEW" ribbon.
Sometimes, but not always, some PAL boxes may have French instructions shrink-wrapped to the box.

Carts:
Frequently, PAL carts will have a "P" sticker placed on the back of them. It's easy to fall off though; especially if left 'loose' for years. NTSC carts have no sticker on the back.

Third party 7800 games:
Boxes from Activision are NTSC.
Boxes from HES SALU are PAL.

Other notes:
NTSC only titles include...
First party: RealSports Baseball, Robotron: 2084, Summer Games, Touchdown Football, Winter Games.
Third party: Rampage by Activision. Tank Command and Water Ski by Froggo.

Also, Asteroids was not released as a PAL box/cart due to it being included in the (BI)OS chip of the PAL consoles (If you have no cart plugged into a PAL system, Asteroids runs).

PAL only title(s) include...
First Party: Sentinel.

Nevertheless, a hacked version has been released to work on NTSC systems.

Final notes:
Some NTSC carts may play on PAL systems with various degrees of graphical issues. Most though will crash after a very short period of time running. However, no PAL cart (without hacking/modification) can play on an NTSC system due to the requirement of a digital signature not found/required in PAL games.

It's probably a good idea to give collectors an idea of what is out there. I didn't believe there was much available overall for games, so I would suggest including NTSC along with the PAL to make a more comprehensive database. Though if there is much work to do on the 2600, the 7800 should not be a priority, but something to be added when there is time to be allocated.

Hi Trebor,

many thanks for your detailed explanation and notes about the difference between 7800 pal and ntsc. This was really helpful for me.

With this information, it is really easy for me to sort the games. That makes me happy.

I think i have recorded all titles and important gameinformation for the database. I have to proofread the list before adding them to the database.

It would be nice if you can tell me then, if we have forgot to add a title or a gameinformation, once it is in the database.

at first view i have 113 Titles, if i counted correctly? (no prototypes, no homebrews, no reproductions)

We thought that it would be a nice addition if we are manageable number of titles imaged provide in our database.

The rating of the rarity levels comes at some point too.

Hi Phil,

You're damn right, if you say that there is still a lot to do with the atari 2600 database. I thought adding the 7800 Titles would be a easy and "fast" thing, to have a new feature on the website, that does not make a lot of work, because i have made the 7800 list over a year ago.

yeah, In the case of Atari7800, we would add pal AND NTSC.

on the other hand, i think that most of the atari 7800 collectors have a nearly full collection, because the number of titles is very managable.

I hope that at least a few collectors browse through the 7800 database, haha.

  • 2 months later...

I know I have the majority of the titles myself, probably at least 90% complete, though none are PAL.

Hey Phil,

after a few quiet weeks today is the day. As previously announced, the 7800 Database is online.

I would appreciate your support, if you still want.

I'd be happy to though I do not have access to my 7800 games at this time. I'm guessing a month, but I'm willing to help.

Phil

EDIT: Actually I'll send you scans of box fronts that I had from when I was selling many titles. It may only be a few since you have many of the USA already in the database, but at least it'll be a start.
