SoulBlazer
Not sure if you can help or if this is a issue with the site, but I'm trying to buy the PDF version of the book. I've made a account and confirmed it, but when I try to buy it and click the PayPal button it doesn't even take me there, instead refusing to go any further with a 'not authanicated link to buy' or something like that error message. TheVgaTv
Soul, Thank you for alerting me to the issue. Someone at the site decided to update my profile and put the wrong paypal email address, which was causing the problem. There shouldn't be an issue now. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3230368 Share on other sites
+wongojack
I realize that it is 2015 and all the cool kids have devices that begin with "i". Unfortunately, the only device I have like that has a "pod" on the end and is from 2005. Any chance the digital version will see a release to something other than Apple/iOS? Or maybe this will solve my problem - does the PDF version have the gameplay footage? I'm thinking no - right? 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3230721 Share on other sites
TheVgaTv
Wongojack, The PDF version is identical to the print version. Unfortunately the only version with gameplay footage is the iBooks version, as it's the only platform that has easy to use creation software (which means I don't have to shell out god only knows how much for some tech guy who doesn't care about the project to slap something together). That said, the PDF version should work on every desktop, laptop and tablet. Greyfox
Wongojack, (which means I don't have to shell out god only knows how much for some tech guy who doesn't care about the project to slap something together). That said, the PDF version should work on every desktop, laptop and tablet. It is possible to have multimedia feature embedded in a PDF document and done many tests on this myself for some of my own publications, the biggest issue being file size, when adding video footage to a digital publication will more or less triple the file size of a standard PDF document, second these feature will only work on a desktop platform and not a tablet or phone, because both Apple and Google do not permit feature of this nature as it incurs on there software offered, especially Apple , with iBook being their choice for this interactive media and will not permit another app or software to have the ability to have this feature. But this will can look into for future volumes if there is enough interest ? Atari_Warlord
I'd love to see a Kindle version similar to what was done for the Making of Star Wars books that had additional media. For now I'll go old school and just get the hard cover. +wongojack
From reading the description here: https://itunes.apple.com/us/book/atari-2600-encyclopedia-vol./id985834985?ls=1&mt=11, It sounds like I should be able to view this in iTunes on Windows. Anyone try that? I don't think it works because it is opened in iBooks, which I believe is Mac only. I have an older free publication called The Video Game Archeologist that is on there if you wanted to download and give it a shot. Lost Dragon
I want something i can hold in me hand (yes, cue sniggering) and i love the smell of a new book, the feel of it etc, so it's physical copy all the way baby, for myself. Not checked Amazon.Uk yet, but is it 'up'?. Greyfox
Here you go fella. Have a look here well worth it for the sheer amount of content included, I've just checked some other similar publications nothing more than a bunch of half used white pages of text with black and white images or the images are pixelly jpgs, something you certainly will not find in this book Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3231388 Share on other sites
Lost Dragon
Well, last books i read, gaming wise were: 1)Masters Of Doom. 2)Vintage Games Consoles (Bill Loguidice/Matt Barton-which i loved) still have 3)Untold History Of Jap Game Developers (Szczepaniak) to even start on, but VCS Enc is on me list for next batch of Amazon Orders. Nice to bloody just look forward to reading something Gaming Related.....re-captures the days of longing for new issue of ZZap64/Arcade/Zero/Mean Machines, hell even Retro Gamer Mag when it was at it's peak. These days mags like Edge/Sci-Fi Now etc i just get around to... From what i've 'seen' i think this baby will hit the spot :-) Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3231401 Share on other sites
SoulBlazer
Had a look at the PDF version last night and very impressed! I just couldn't bring myself to pay $50 for a physical book, even though it looks really nice and I understand the high cost. But even the PDF version of the book is super impressive, with nice reviews and overviews of the games, pictures of all the game manuals and related material, programmer, rarity, etc. Very worth the purchase! Even though I don't agree with some of the reviews. One big question though: Air Raid was programed by Garry Kitchen of Activision fame? TheVgaTv
Soul. I used Atari Mania as one of my major sources of info (mainly because when I began this project half a dozen people pointed me in that direction). Based on that info and other sources the code for air raid was based on Space Jockey, which is why the credit ended up with Garry. Thank you for picking up th PDF and glad you are enjoying the book. I know $50 is a lot for a book, which is why I priced the PDF at $10. I want this project to be as accessible to as many people as possible. Now that you explain that it makes sence, but a small suggestion would be to remove that in a future version and say 'Unknown' and explain in the text the game is a hack of Space Jockey which was done by Garry Kitchen. It's a little confusing the way it's currently worded. I thought you guys had made a amazing discovery! +jeremiahjt
I bought the iTunes version, great job. I did notice some errors in the non-text parts of the book. Like missing apostrophes or subtitles and Lady in Wading being listing as Lady in Waiting. In each instance the title was correct in the text of the entry. How were the information boxes and extras at the end of the entry done? Not really a big deal, but maybe you can watch out for this in the next volumes. TheVgaTv
Jeremiahjt, thank you for picking up the iBooks version of the book, and glad you are enjoying it. I have multiple people look at things before it goes live, but sometimes we miss stuff like that. I do strive to make this as perfect as it possibly can, but with multiple versions across platforms and trying to maintain my day job. One of these days when you guys help me sell a few thousand copies and I can devote full time to this these errors will be a thing of the past Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3231797 Share on other sites
SoulBlazer
Another small error that I found, and confirmed with some other people -- Atari Video Cube came out first in 1982 and THEN it was re-released as Rubik's Cube in 1984, not the other way around as you guys have it. The original name was actually Rubik's Cube, Greg, but the name was changed before the advertising appeared in Atari Age magazine. Presumably, Atari didn't want to pay the Ideal Toy Corporation for the rights to use the official name. (And as soon as I remember where I read that, I'll provide a link. ) Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3232203 Share on other sites

Chris++
But the game WAS re-released later as Rubik's Cube. They even gave it another part number! How interesting. Maybe they changed their minds about taking the risk? I don't know enough about the 2600's later reissue history to even guess about that, so maybe one of these more...encyclopedic guys can enlighten or correct me. Yeah, I was talking to Ferg about it earlier and even talked about it on my feedback for the game this week. Then I read it in the Encyclopedia and that caught my eye as that went backwards from everything I had read and Ferg agreed with me. I didn't want sound like a idiot in my feedback. I always just figured Atari DID get the rights to use the name later on. If you're familiar with Tempet's Atari Proto's site he talks about it there also. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/236829-vcs-encyclopedia-coming-soon/page/4/#findComment-3232226 Share on other sites
