I recently learnt why so many people dislike PCE Works, because before I did not know. I actually own several of their products and am extremely impressed with their quality. Tobias even gave me some goods himself, but I didn't know that apparently his original repro of Sapphire was passed off as original. If he intentionally did that, and made the repro as close as possible to the original, then yes that is a serious knock against him because many people likely got scammed in that ordeal. These new ones though I think are quality reproductions, although as usual there is no mention of those that did the hard work of translating the games, etc.

I know that CD games don't have region protection, but do any of them have region detection?

In other words, are there games that contain both Japanese and English text on the same disc (so that the US and Japanese versions have the same ISO), and will only show the Japanese text on a Japanese system? And if so, are there known hacks to force the US region for those games?

I ask because I think I'll be pulling the trigger on a recapped PC Engine Duo soon. The seller offers a region mod, but since I plan on using an EverDrive exclusively, I shouldn't need it for HuCard games. However, I want to make sure that I won't be able to play multiregion CD games (if they exist) in English.

BTW what's the AV out on a standard PCE Duo? Just composite & stereo via the AV cable?

No, PCE CDs aren't like Neo Geo games.

Good news! PC Engine CD has no copy protection, so you can burn your own English versions, or fan translations and play no problem.

Yes, composite out is standard. You should also know that the power and AV come out of the side of the system. That was corrected on the Duo-R.

Well somehow US Hucard games can "detect" a Japanese PCe and refuse to load, even with an adapter. Whatever game logic is responsible for that lockout could in theory detect the region of the system it's running on and alter it's presentation.

And the fact that people are bidding $700+ on a fake PCe repro that can be had for 100€ shows that some poor sap is being decieved. Surely they wouldn't bid unless they believed it was worth the high price? :ponder:

I saw more than once people bidding on computer parts and I gave up... and following it still, saw some items ending costing them more than the price for a new one.

Pretty much how people buy new consoles day 1 and sell them back for twice the price.

IMO same bullshit than people buying the crappy non official VCS game 'Air Raider" or something for 10 000$. It's certainl not even worth 10 cents and yet people wanted to buy it for 10 grands. That's their money.

I think one part of the success of eBay is the "I put up a fight to get it" when it's just "I threw more monies at our face to get it" and some people will bid more for th fight than gtting the item.

Composite out is standard.. from a DIN plug right? So standard but with the specific A/V cable.

Thanks! I've actually been a member of pcenginefx for some time, but wanted to ask my newbie questions in an environment I know well. :)

I know the Duo RX have it, but the Interface Unit uses 3 RCA jacks, so it's 100% standard and "don't need to hunt the right cable"; Nec might have carried that on the Duo models.

I didn't know about the Duo so heh, better ask to be sure about it. Not that I need one, but other might like to know this detail; if you buy any Duo, you'll need the A/V cable with it.

Same. I have one of those handy "PCE port to SCART" boxes, but obviously with the Interface Unit I can't use it. There are transistors inside so I bet the signal is amplified, but most RGB mods done "at the plug" (replacing the DIN by a larger model with more pins) doesn't boost the signal and it seems to work fine.

I think I'll try that first. There is enough room in the IU for some added boards anyway.

Why do you have to be rich to collect for this system? It can't be rarity. The games can't be rare if more than one or two show up on eBay. You can't even get a dirt common game like Keith Courage for less than $10. So what is it?

Supply and demand. Suddenly everything Turbo is sought after, and there just aren't that many copies of these games, so people have gone price crazy. I'm glad I got most of my games many years ago, as today the late CD-based games are $500 each.

I'm glad I got the console used before the prices skyrocketed, but the game prices are horrendous. Adding new games to the collection almost doesn't seem worth it. I really like the console, there's just something about underdog consoles I like. Do we know what caused everyone to want a Turbografx-16?

Don't try to understand collectards.

A short while back there was a bunch of new in box Turbo graphics 16 consoles for sale online in europe. A couple still seem to be around ebay. Did you guys see that? do you know what was that about?

I didin't get one because of the just mentioned Problem of the Price.

Damn, I got a mega Drive, in hopes it's an "underrated" System, and the games are still too expensive. My favorites are shooters, but the Prices are just ridiculous...

So In the end I just skipped it. Cool System, but one a couple youtuebrs make a Video saying a console is an underrated gem it just instantly stops being underrated. Not their fault, just a fact...

Those are PAL models, they won't work on NTSC TV without serious hacking. Plus games were never ported to PAL version.

It seems plan were to make TG-16 available in Europe but it never took off and many of the consoles produced were stuck in storage for years.

Well, Turbografx was an underdog for sure. But it kicked ass.

Comparing it to other underdogs like 7800, SMS, Coleco, etc which have relatively cheap games by comparison.

Gameplay really shines on TG-16 because it had great exclusives and accurate arcade ports. Not as many turds. It was successful in Japan as well, but that's beside the point.

Going the other direction, Neo Geo was high end and expensive so it sold fewer, and has remained expensive.

Turbo was cheap in the early 90s so maybe gamers thought less of it. But price is a factor of both rarity and desirability. Turbo games are fairly uncommon yet highly sought after, so price goes up.

Very well said.

It's weird... why taking so much time in making the PC Engine bulkier and "more serious" for the US release, if then you put cheesy artwork on the covers?

Looke at the Japanese PoP cover:

And even Final Zone II :

It looks like someone swapped the US and Jap cover (well aside from the manga-esque style on the characters of FZII )

Strange thing really.

A big part of the TG-16 "bulkier" change was the FCC requirement for RF shielding, but I agree. TG-16 is "serious" black and with, in my opinion, a pretty cool logo, indicative of a high end electronics of the time... but the art chosen for USA releases on games is almost wholly "kiddie" and just poor in quality, when there is superb Japanese art available.
