Profanity

Recommended Posts

On the subject of the power of words, there was an experiment on the Mythbusters television show that I found interesting.

As a means to increasing immediate term pain tolerance, the results of the experiment indicated that using actual swear words gave subjects the ability to withstand more pain than substitute words like "darn", "heck", "puppies and kittens", etc.

There's a time and place for everything.

I'm not afraid of words or hearing words or my kids hearing those words. Its the context and situation that I worry about when my kid hears it.

For example Youtube is pretty bad and I wouldn't want her hearing some of the content on there but I have no problems with her watching Ferris Beuler's Day off or even Stir Crazy. It comes down to the context.

As far as limited vocabulary is concerned it goes both ways. Yes I do see it as a sign but I'm careful not to judge, just as I'm careful not to judge those who never use these words.

I often use weirder substitutes. "What the hork?" is common, and I've sometimes made "melon farmer" jokes.

A while back, my wife starting complaining about my regular outburst around the house when things didn't go my way. Usually this consisted of a concise "Motherf***er!" For a while I made a concerted effort to substitute "Mother Bear!". Sadly, this has devolved to the current "Motherf***er Bear!". She is not amused.

I curse a lot in casual conversation with friends, but you have to know when it's not OK. I wouldn't do it around my co-workers, boss, family, etc.

I know I said "shit" once in one of my YT videos, but I bleeped it out. There might be a couple of other similar instances. But I try to make my YT videos as professionally as possible, so that means no cursing.

But it's fun to judge. People who don't say naughty words look like this:

Ah yes, the overuse of the word rape. I remember being maybe 14 and a super cool internet user. I used the word rape once around my mother talking about a game. I actually didn't curse around my parents, I think it was some stupid test the waters moment. I'm glad she didn't have anything sharp on her. I think I'd have been in 15 pieces buried around the yard. From then on I knew the line, it was well behind me and I ran back to it with a quickness. Naturally a number of years later I look at that moment (and many others while growing up) with a disappointed sigh at myself.

Offensive references aside, I think most of the time all I want out of people that I'm not close friends with is to fulfill some objective. Why am I only seeing one way traffic on this device, my car is doing this when I accelerate, etc. If like 40% of what you are saying back to me is just extra curse words or hard to navigate slang I'm just going to go elsewhere. I don't know you, I only know what you are saying to me right now. If a lot of the content is useless to me that doesn't breed confidence in the rest of your content.

I've watched both types...I think moderation is the key. For example.....some people started off with great vids with mild cussing and seemed to go great. I use the Game Chasers as an example. I really liked them when they started out, but with some success their shows have turned into nothing but cussing and stupid hilarity that has gotten to be too much so I quit watching. No swear gamer and Metal Jesus Rocks are a couple of my current favs.

I guess it's all opinionated, but I prefer less profanity. I personally can't understand why anyone in 2015 would wanna look like this (and he curses ridiculously too much), but that's just me.

He's going for the nerdy tree-hugging hippie environment-saving heavy metal Enya-listening gun-shooting tattooed biker kill you at a Twin Peaks restaurant look. It's very popular these days.

Agreed that profanity is a bit overused. But the luxury of being upset about the amount of profanity on the internet is such a wonderful problem to have, isn't it? If the worst problem I have today is that some twerp cusses too much on the internet, that's a pretty good day in the history of humanity. Even in our modern world, that's a pretty good life I've got if that's my major concern.

For example, if I were living in Greece this week, I probably wouldn't be concerned about profanity on the internet.

Personally I would much rather be surrounded by too much verbal profanity than live somewhere where it was illegal, such as in Islamic State. Because here I can choose not to watch that YouTube video, whereas there I have no choice. I like having that choice, even though that freedom means others get to chose to do things I don't agree with.

I find the continued popularity of the Kardashians to be far more obscene and profane than any cussing I will ever hear or read. :)

I don't think it's fair to judge his appearance. The swearing is obnoxious and unnecessary though.

What I was trying to say is it's all opinions. Some good people just love to curse, and it bothers other. Now I can't possibly understand why AlphaOmegaSin would want to look like that, but from what I have heard he's a great guy.

I think it's just a reflection of the kind of music he likes. He's a big headbanger/metal fan I believe. It's not my style but he does seem like a nice guy. It's fun when he hangs around with the Game Chasers.
