Anyone mess with SAM voice synthesizer?

Recommended Posts

Create an empty DOS 2.0 or 2.5 disk, write DOS/DUP files from DOS menu. Copy the file from S.A.M. boot disk called Autorun.sys onto it and I think you're ready to go

There's a few sample disks on my page I think : http://pokeysoft.no/games/atari/a8util.htm

search for SAM Software Automated Mouth

if I remember right, it has to be a DOS2.0 disk. DOS2.5 didn't work.

i wrote a basic game that swears at you using sam, its called mega swear challenge (kiddish i know but at the time i was one!)

if you type "tisidubegudr" into it, the program lists itself so you can see how sam is used

incase anyone is interested here it is!

The SAM synthesizer should actually work regardless of the Os. However, the reciter(the program part that translates english text into phonems) seems to be pretty DOS dependent. You need to load it from the DUP menu.

Actually, I believe I *might* have a patched version of the reciter...

I used it in assembler which was easy. Atarimania has the manual:

I barely recognised a word in that!

Are you using that together with xBIOS? If so, do you have some example code which you can share?

How much RAM does SAM use up?

Thank you for the code above. As far as I can see, there is nothing in there which is xBIOS dependent. Correct me if I am wrong.

I was considering playing with SAM a little. I was also considering adding this to the xBIOS manual I am compiling, but as there's nothing xBIOS about it, I will not do so. It's useful code though for those of us who want to play with SAM. Thanks.

I had asked if it was being used with xBIOS and if so, could you supply some code.

You then supplied code, so I thought that you had used xBIOS with this demo.

When people mentioned that you have to use Atari Dos, I thought that you had found a clever way of using xBIOS with SAM.

It's OK, it doesn't matter, just a little confusion...

Please may the thread continue....! :)

A little OT: When I was in highschool, we were required to make a 30-second audio commercial that would be played over the radio. All I can say is, Graphics 9 is your friend! ;-) for that ultra demonic voiceover, it sounded awesome. Mind you, you couldn't really understand a damn word he said but I'll never forget the kid who said: "I have no idea what you're selling but I'd buy it!" lol

A little SAM tid bit: Remember the introduction of the Macintosh in 1984 when the MAC says "I am Macintosh"?

go to the 2:48 part of the clip

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=210&v=G0FtgZNOD44

Everyone in 1984 thought it was revolutionary right? Did you know that that speech synthesizer had it origins in the 800's SAM. It used the "speech engine" from "Don't Ask"'s SAM. Atari had this a couple years before the Macintosh.

Remember: Good artists copy, great artists steal.

Many popular 8 bits had some sort of software speech.

The Apple II, C64, CoCo/Dragon, BBC Micro, Spectrum, etc... all had some sort of software speech synthesizer around '82 or '83.
