Run Out!

I would rather classify Fatal Run as the home gamers (of the time) answer to their arcade game Road Blasters. There are no machine guns, explosions, or cars intentionally bashing into you or cutting you off in Out Run! (or Run Out!).

There can be several answers to one question, though. :P

I've been following this since the beginning and have been looking forward to seeing where you take it because it has looked very promising and I really love racing games. There are a couple of issues that keep me from enjoying this, although it sounds like you may have addressed the first one.

- The sound. The music is really overpowering and sounds depressing. Every time I try out a new build, the volume blasts my (and my wife's ears). Even when she's on the other side of the apartment, she'll yell "Don't play that depressing music!"

- Roadside crashes. With the huge enemy cars (tight spaces) and the way the car handles (with the road's suddenly changing curves), crashing when touching the edge of the road takes the fun out of the drive and makes it nearly unplayable for me. I'd really like to see it changed so that you kinda bounce off the edges of the road (kind of deflected a bit), with perhaps a little bit of slowdown instead of immediately coming to a crashing halt.

- Sizes of enemy cars. They are stil so wide that I'm often unable to squeeze between them and the edge of the road. Combined with the crashing mentioned previously, this seems unfairly difficult. Also, if you have the ROM space, it would look better and give a better sense of depth if the enemy cars had at least one (or more) smaller scaled sprites when they are more distant from you.

- Sense of speed. No matter what gear I'm in, enemy cars seem to approach at the same speed (and too slowly). Even in high gear, we just creep up on enemy cars.

Like I said earlier, this game shows a lot of promise and I love racing games. If you can do something about these issues, I think you'd have a great racing game (in a genre that's underrepresented on our 2600s).

The latest version of the game has the ability to turn off the music ('cept the game over song). This song imitates a popular song from Out Run!. I would recommend turning down your volume if you can hear it across your apartment. I can't fit any smaller sprites into the game as most of the space is taken up. The reason the cars are the size that they are is to be realistic in comparison with the car being imitated (the convertible Ferrari is a slightly smallish car when compared to many other popular sports cars). It's not a Miata, but it's thin. I beat the game nearly every time I play it, so I don't have a problem getting around the traffic. The cars mulling towards you is to give the feeling that they are very fast like other sports cars should be. There is a difference in speed, based on your gear, although subtle. I may be able to make them come at you slightly faster in high gear. That is not out of the realm of possibility.

Okay! Here is the latest version of RunOut!

The music is set to "1" on the volume control (AUDV0=1), it was "2" before and I can't go any lower than "1" or it's MUTE!

Holding down on the title screen before pressing fire to begin the game halts the in game music for the duration of the game (game over music is still there, also "1"). I haven't noticed any problems with the volume and I like the tunes so that's just me. I don't crank my TV or PC up very loud.

There is an additional background near the beginning of the game. The other cars come at you at a faster pace when in high gear. I would recommend using the brakes to avoid flying off the road when they come during turns. I found that the game was slightly less difficult as the cars seemed to rip past you just before entering curves when traveling at top speed. I beat the game on my second try.

Remember B/W-Color pauses and unpauses the game.

Car colors are available with the difficulty switches (blue, yellow, and red)!

This game uses more color, more animation, and more sprites than any other VCS racing game! It is non-violent (no explosions, even), and my kids can play it with little to no trouble. My wife (who doesn't even like Out Run) said she likes to play this game (that was the slower version)! I am very happy with it and will likely not make any more changes as I can play it and beat it over and over and over again and see the cool Atari fireworks that pop up each time I make a complete circuit.

Tell me what you think of the Space Needle and please enjoy the latest update to RunOut!.

What ferrari are you basing your car on? If its a testarossa like out run then believe me they are big cars, very wide, i know someone who has one.

Well, if it's a Testarossa with about 100 inch wheelbase, then it's between 2-7 inches smaller than a certain Camaro, Mustang, Corvette, Diablo, Supra...

If it's a 400I with about 106 in wheelbase (and custom rear lights ;) ), then it would be about as wide as the others.

Before it's solidified about the cars being proper widths, let's answer a few questions. 1) What model of car does one drive in Pole Position? 2) What model of cars do the opponents drive in Pole Position? 3) What is the top speed of a VW Beetle or a semi-tractor trailer in Out Run? 4) What is the make, model, and year of the car in Bump 'n' Jump? 5) What model of drag racer is in the Atari Activision game Dragster? and finally, 6) What type of horse and what is the top speed of the mount in Stampede?

I think the idea here is that it's a game and not a simulator. And, like Out Run, it's focus is driving...maybe even sight-seeing with your often-times testy girlfriend...and not racing.

It's a Testarossa with ejection seats, an advanced experimental braking system, a nitro booster (as of the last update), faux camel hair trunk, a cassette player with Blaupunkt sound system, and the fuzzy dice from the Millennium Falcon.

Much has changed in Run Out since the last download...

The game is thoroughly shaded now and looks much better.

After completing a circuit you are rewarded with fireworks.

There are three fireworks displays and then the game ends with a special winning screen!! (Three completions and you WIN!!)

There are also a few more cars on the second and third circuits.

This game is basically ready for a cart and is super fun in my opinion.

Fire is gas

Left/Right Steers

Up shifts (after first two slower gears automatically shift)

Holding down is brakes

Lightly tapping down in high gear once changes the high gear engine noise

Color/BW turns "music" off and on

The difficulty switches change the car's color (whenever you want to change them).

Try it on your Harmony Cart TODAY!!

YOU CAN DO IT!!

 :D

It's a pattern! I was thinking of writing a short story like 'My very educated mother just served us nine pizzas.' only one that tells each turn. The cars and turns are all basically the same every time. After one complete circuit there are a couple more cars later in the game.

HOMES!! (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior) YOU'LL NEVER FORGET IT!!

WOOOO HOOOO! I was able to make it through to the first fireworks!!! After some cussing (I hate hitting other cars!) I finally made it and they were Atari symbols fireworks flashing in the sky!

I used a SEGA three-button pad for controls, and thought of Chubbs telling Happy, "Tap it in...tap it in." That helped.
