Major or Remo, would you guys mind sending me another Preview Program invite? I checked in today and while I got both of your friend invites (along with a few others), there's nothing in regards to the Preview Program. It's been about five or six days since the request was sent so I'm not sure if they time out or not.

Remo sent me another invite just prior to the weekend and I still haven't received a message for the Preview Program. It's possible they have cut off invitations and didn't notify anybody, or they are hand picking individuals now to participate rather than simply letting anybody in. Not a huge deal, but I was looking forward to testing out the B/C early. There aren't a lot of games supported but there are a few I'd love to play on the One right now, like Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved and Perfect Dark Zero.

I looked around the other day after I read his post, and didn't find anything to confirm it. So I think he may just be mistaken.

For those that are in it though, I found multiple reports that they're hoping to release a BC update soon for preview members.

The new XBox 360 compatibility gets updated this weekend to all XBox One machines. Another feature is you can stream XBox One games to your Windows 10 machine.

Woah! That's cool. It'll fix a little problem I have where my monitor only has one HDMI port, so I can't currently connect my 360 without swapping cables.

As a side note I've used the 3 and 5 port version of this HDMI switcher on my two primary TVs with no discernible hit to quality whatsoever (and fairly complex setups to boot): http://amzn.to/1J0YghK

For less than $7 for the 3 port model (less than $13 for the 5 port), I can't recommend it enough.

If you go cheap, whatever you do don't try a cheap splitter that claims to do auto-switching. I had one that would switch sources when I didn't want it to. The baffling part was it would switch to a source that wasn't turned on, so in the middle of a show my screen would go black and I'd have to unplug HDMI cables to get it to reset. I ended up getting a simple 2-port splitter with a manual switch for about $15. Works like a charm.

  • 1 month later...

Hey guys, I couldn't find a thread here covering all of this, so I'm hoping some users who had/have both a Xbox 360 and a Xbox One can help me out.

I'm thinking about upgrading to play some upcoming games like Fallout 4 but I have a number of questions:

1) Is there any backward compatiabilty on the Xbox one for 360 games?

2) Can I transfer over my profile from Xbox live over to the 360?

3) What about the games I bought in the marketplace over the years? Can I re-download those on the Xbox One?

4) Can I transfer over downloaded games and saves from my HD on my 360, or install the HD on it onto the Xbox One?

I'm really mostly trying to see if I need to keep a 360 around for my games and my downloaded stuff or if I can move all that over to the Xbox One.

Backwards compatibility isn't really a thing. It isn't as simple as that. They have to build an emulator for each game. So the short answer is yes and no. over time more games will be available - but that will take time and only a handful are available at the moment. I suggest you look up on Youtube about it - IGN and XBOX have their own channels showcasing it. Major Nelson does as well.

Yes. It isn't your gamercard and hasn't been for a while - it is now all part of your Live Account. This will link up with Windows and any other MS accounts or devices you use. This means you can save onto OneDrive on PC and view on OneDrive on Xbone.

No. It is not how it works. Xbox One environment is radically different to 360 - this is because they opted for a PC architecture - and so it cannot simply play. How it reads saves is even different due to the change in filing system to speed up Read/Write times. It is the problem Harmonix have had with their forthcoming Rockband game - they want DLC from old RBs to work on next gen. Im afraid this is like Vinyl to Cassette. This is why backward compatibility is so hard - it requires emulation by software.

Yet again you are jumping way ahead of yourself and not thinking this through. As harsh as that may sound. A) the disk on the XBone is not the same type of disk drive. so no - you can't trade them out. B) the file system is different so your xbone wont read the older HDD. C) Games form 360 cant play on Xbox one - this isn't a hidden fact. it is well publicised. None of the next gens are able to play old downloaded games and neither can play old disks. So no need for saves.

In short all you are asking is the same as me saying "Can I put a fiat panda engine into a Zonda?" no. you can't. it doesn't fit. or it is exactly the same as saying - can my Nintendo Wii U play Virtual Boy Games straight from the card? No. They are two different consoles. well the differences between the 360 and XBOne are the same as the famicom and amiga 500.

I read somewhere that invites are closed due to the flood that happened after BC was announced. If accurate, that may explain why they never showed up.

Nope. Not true. They only ever allow so many onto the program and they tend to pick based on activity, experience and a whole host of other criteria. I am in the Preview program for not just xbox but Spark and Windows insider. It isn't that great. You get points for completing tasks and giving feedback. The coolest part is being able to suggest a feature for future OS builds and bug report. So many bugs on XBOne.

As for BC... it is ok but it is still an emulator and it shows. the FPS can spike and plummet.... and that is just one problem. TBH the BC doesn't interest me as much as the idea of upscaling... seen it go to work in previews of other products and it's great! Like with ramping up 480 vids to 720. would be nice to see if they can do it with games as well as flash videos.

I forgot to say that I invited a friend 12 times nearly 7 months ago and when I asked SuperK (used to work on SUAM on XboxLive UK) to which he answered that they only ever allow a few at a time and that it might take 6-8 weeks for them to send him the invite. If at all. He still aint got it. and it is not down to Gamerscore. MS aren't stupid and they know rich people and people that rent games will have a higher than normal score.

Can I transfer over saves from my HD on my 360

Not going to reread this thread, but in case this wasn't answered, yes, you can.

For the appropriate titles that are supported by the XB1, your 360's save files for them can be easily moved forward to the XB1 via the cloud.

They have to build an emulator for each game. So the short answer is yes and no. over time more games will be available - but that will take time and only a handful are available at the moment. I suggest you look up on Youtube about it - IGN and XBOX have their own channels showcasing it. Major Nelson does as well.

They are of course not building a custom emulator for each game. Microsoft has been quite open that this is a universal emulator that at least in theory, doesn't require any game specific customization.

Even on the Xbox 360 with its haphazard backwards compatibility, they weren't building a custom emulator for each game or group of games that ran similarly. The emulator profile for an individual game merely instructed what components of the emulator program that had to be ran for that specific title, since the Xbox 360 didn't have the horsepower to run the program fully enabled.

No. It is not how it works. Xbox One environment is radically different to 360

Yes, thanks to emulation, this is how it works. If the game has received approval, which Microsoft has made clear is a mere formality, his XBLA downloads and such will work on the Xbox One. A number already work like the Rare downloads.

How it reads saves is even different due to the change in filing system to speed up Read/Write times.

I'm sure that Xbox 360 game saves posed zero issue for Microsoft implementing backwards compatibility.

It is the problem Harmonix have had with their forthcoming Rockband game - they want DLC from old RBs to work on next gen. Im afraid this is like Vinyl to Cassette.

Sorry, but this is nonsense

There's no reason why Harmonix couldn't support previous DLC. In fact, that's exactly what they're doing.

Yet again you are jumping way ahead of yourself and not thinking this through. As harsh as that may sound. A) the disk on the XBone is not the same type of disk drive. so no - you can't trade them out.

Nope, they're both standard 2.5" laptop hard drives. In fact, from the specs I've seen, they both even run at 5,400 rpm. Nothing in the least is exotic with either. He can't replace the internal drive on the XB1 (Easily, that is) and substitute a 360 drive, simply because Microsoft isn't allowing it. Nothing more, nothing less.

If he bought an enclosure, there's nothing stopping him from utilizing a 360 HDD as an external drive on the XB1.

the disk on the XBone is not the same type of disk drive

It's a Blu-Ray drive, but it's fully compatible with the DVD format that the Xbox 360 utilized. Same with the PS4's drive.

Games form 360 cant play on Xbox one - this isn't a hidden fact. it is well publicised.

Where have you been. ;)

None of the next gens are able to play old downloaded games and neither can play old disks.

Again, nope! At least in the case of the Xbox One, it can and looks set to grow by leaps and bounds.

There's even hope on the PS4 with strong rumors a while back of PS1/PS2 backwards compatibility, which not only would hopefully include the original media, but surely would include support for existing PS1 and PS2 downloads from PSN.

Nope. Not true. They only ever allow so many onto the program and they tend to pick based on activity, experience and a whole host of other criteria.

Saw enough reports of everyone that was invited being accepted for the first few days after preview backwards compatibility was rolled out, followed by plenty of people just a few days later that ended up like Austin did, where I'm pretty sure it indeed is correct in this specific instance as they were flooded with requests.

Yeah. I was thinking of getting a cheap splitter but cheap does not always mean good. I can get one for around £10.

Where do people get these screens with only one HDMI? Don't go to Maplins as they are expensive. PCWorld do some very good ones - but the price isn't cheap. We are talking over £20... it's like anything though - you can buy a cheap extension lead and it break in 6 months. Or you can buy an expensive Belkin one that lasts 6 years. Im not even joking. So same with this - buy a well made one that works or buy a cheap one repeatedly.

Really? So rockband and guitar hero don't need specialist ones for the hardware?

We have reached out to Microsoft for more information.

Update: "As Frank said, nothing has been built. It is super challenging to emulate two completely different architectures and there aren't currently any plans to build this

that was before they started.

But go on and tell me how they don't have to optimise each game on the Azure cloud. Where did you get your BSc from?

Oh sorry I meant they have to release EMULATED versions. I wasn't aware that pedantry ran riot on here. I thought people might have the brains to realise that. I'm sorry that my English isn''t the best - it isn't my native tongue. Living in the UK has made me better and worse. haha.

“There are, but we’re not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately… It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. So there’s nothing to announce, but I would love to see it myself.”so it isn't custom? It is universal is it? Haha. Universal means for all - so it will play all games on all consoles? No. Custom is different to bespoke. They have to emulate, idiot, because it is different architecture. and five points for naming whom from MS said that quote about that? if it isn't an emulator tell me how the blades work? Also tell me how you can access leaderboards and other things?

Just to be clear, you're entirely correct about the challenge posed by the different hardware architecture of these two generations of Xbox hardware.

But what you don't seem clear on, is that besides tweaking of their software solution and game specific paperwork, the challenge to work around this has been resolved. Xbox 360 software can now be played on the Xbox One. The technical roadblock has been lifted.

You told him no to several questions, where it really wasn't the correct answer or at best was a rather misleading response that was only half correct. I don't think clarification was really needed since those interested around here are well versed in this deal by now, but it didn't hurt in case someone else was misled down the road.

Really? So rockband and guitar hero don't need specialist ones for the hardware?

Not sure what you're asking, but Rock Band will not only support previous DLC, it will also support previous accessories as well via a controller dongle that allows them to pass the Xbox One controller lockout security.

I'm not a fan, but I believe that I read that the new Guitar Hero is changing their setup. So previous songs would need to actually be redone from the ground up and the old instruments wouldn't provide the necessary controls due to shift from the old 5 button layout to the new 6 button configuration.

“There are, but we’re not done thinking them through yet, unfortunately… It turns out to be hard to emulate the PowerPC stuff on the X86 stuff. Other than your insult, I'm not clear on what it is that you're saying here. But I take it that you're claiming that I said it isn't emulation, or that it was somehow easy to accomplish, when I said neither.

And Microsoft has made it clear that support for a particular title is a formality. The publisher sends a request to Microsoft for their game to join the BC list and after running it through QA just to be assured that everything is okay, it's approved.

So like how you can download an Atari 2600 emulator and insert virtually any 2600 rom and play it without issue, that's what Microsoft supposedly has with this XB1 emulator (Although clearly, there's room for improvement). No title specific Xbox 360 emulator here since it's an all-in-one solution, hence the word universal.

It's a matter of paperwork (And how fast QA can work). And clearance sadly has to happen since everything is being downloaded. It's the problem with digital backwards compatibility, versus true physical compatibility like in earlier generations. Unfortunately, the XB1 download for Perfect Dark Zero that occurs when the original disc is inserted into the system for instance, is technically a different game now. The publisher must consent for it to be allowed.

It's also why some titles sadly don't stand a chance, due to expired licenses that will be too expensive to renew for a game to join this list, a publisher having gone defunct and thus unable to provide approval, a publisher aiming for people to buy a remastered version instead of playing their old disc/download, etc.
