+therealbountybob
The Goonies You never know what will appear in the HSC next! Making it's debut is The Goonies. From memory it's a decent platform game, yes it can be tricky, but also very rewarding, atmospheric and it is beatable. You hold down fire to toggle between two moveable characters on some screens; often needing to position them first and quickly switch and then leggit! I'd recommend working out each screen as you go. If you get stuck ask for a hint or two. There are not many screens (5) so they are designed to take a bunch of goes to get past them. As you figure each one out you will be pleased. If you play using videos or anything that is ok but say so when you post. Sikor
Finding a bonus game for Goonies (if it wins!) will be tricky Why? Conan will be o.k. ;P http://www.atarimania.com/game-atari-400-800-xl-xe-conan_6818.html
ballyalley
you can still catch up for any missed games this season, just post away Can we try to improve our scores for a round that we scored low in (in my case, "Zeppelin")? I think posting late scores means cutting your points in half, but that would still be better than the measly two points I earned for this game. Plus, maybe I'll play with my friend on Thursday night and I can control the ship, and he can fire. That would be fun! I used to really enjoy "Goonies II" on the NES, and I've always wanted to play the first one (and understand it), so this is my great opportunity to do so. I didn't realize that there were so few screens. I'm dismayed-- but not surprised-- that "Zone Ranger" didn't win this round. It looks like it will have to wait until the next round for that game to show up on a poll again. Too bad. (Poor "Cosmic Tunnels" didn't even get one vote. It's worthy of a round of Should-Try-Once games.) Edited June 23, 2015 by ballyalley

I've updated the first post. Conan: Hall of Volta has been played here before but a long time ago. Again tricky but good, Can we try to improve our scores for a round that we scored low in (in my case, "Zeppelin")? Zeppelin (it was only 1 point but I felt too mean!) only completing levels will earn points as you can stay on the first level forever and keep shooting stuff that re-appears. 2 player or 4 player will earn points Catch-up any improved scores are fine Polls Zone Ranger? Future poll suggesion? Beam Rider eh! knocked out from the next poll by Alpha Shield Yes Cosmic Tunnels will re-appear before too long

ballyalley
[Conan] can make it a 3 week round as both games are challenging. I used to love playing "Conan" on the Apple II at school in 8'th grade (1986). I played it all the time in my LOGO class when I was done with my exercises and all period in class on Fridays (which was usually a "free" day). Well, I had to trade-off playing each level with other classmates, but it worked out well; we usually became specialists at one or two of the levels. I also played "Spy Hunter" in LOGO class. I was really surprised years later when I played the Atari version of "Conan" and it looked exactly the same as the Apple II release (poor color pallette and all). Luckily the gameplay seemed to have survived. I could make it to level 10 on the Apple (the last level, I think), but I could never beat it. My play experience on the Atari is extremely limited. Playing it again will be like starting over. I seem to recall a rather nasty bird that would attack you. Zone Ranger? Future poll suggesion? "Zone Ranger" is a great game! In the mid-eighties I bought "Beamrider" and "Zone Ranger" (each on cart) for my C64 on the same day (for $10 each). That was a happy day! "Zone Ranger" is another game that's great, but it seems to be not too well known. Great fun. These two Activision games will always be mixed in my head. Maybe the next poll could use some not-well-known, open-space-themed games along with "Zone Ranger."
ballyalley
I found some a short review of "Conan" from Antic: "Conan" by DatasoftReviewed by Michael Ciraolo(Antic Vol. 3, No. 12 / April 1985)The flowing hair and acrobatic leaps of Conan have joined Datasoft's Famous Faces series (Bruce Lee, Dallas).Conan must fight his way through seven levels of giant floating eyeballs, dragons, flame monsters, electric spark creatures and other nasties to find and destroy the villian Volta. The legendary barbarian can perform astounding jumps and tumbles; he can fall from any height, and throw his magical sword at foes.Datasoft describes Conan as "surrealistic". Surely the purple trees add to that. You'll also encounter lava pits, large triendly birds, and transporter booths. All of this is combined with challenges typical of any ladder game. What detracts from the enjoyment are programming quirks such as Conan walking halfway through trees, standing in mid air, and so on. Conan lacks the crisp movements of Whistler's Brother or Montezuma's Revenge. The greatest shortcoming is the game's excruciatingly long loading time for each screen. Considering there are only seven levels, no scrolling and no page flipping, this seems quite unnecessary.Because you must go back to the beginning each time you exhaust your two initial lives, you can spend several minutes waiting to get back to the level of your death. Better take along some coffee on Conan's quest I'd forgotten how much disk access that "Conan" requires. This will be one that I'll probably only play only under emulation for that reason. Playing on real hardware would be fun, but slow. The manuals for "Conan" were not on AtariMania, so I dug them up from other sites. I couldn't find the Atari version, but I found the C64 version (which is about the same, but references the function keys F1-F7 rather than the Start, Select and Option): Conan (1985)(Datasoft)(C64)(Manual).pdf Here is a similar version of the manual, but without artwork and no references to any computer. Perhaps this was a generic manual for a re-release: Conan (Famous Famous)(Manual).pdf I recalled ten levels, but the box and manual say that "Conan" only has seven levels, which makes more sense, because we always had time to get to the last level (or nearly always) before class was over. One last thing about "Conan." Is it a bonus game, meaning it's only worth one point for playing, or is it round that shares two games-- both worth up to ten points?

SHiNjide
4905 at room nr. 5, but have no clue what to do there. Destroy the skulls? Or staple them, to get to the passage in the lower right corner? Hm, it's hard with this vulture flying around.
powersoft
8.655 I was off the last screen... Lost my last life there. I had in mind the last screen makes points x5 or something... At the end there is a nice game over picture... But had it in mind it would be harded. I had it more harder in my remember from those days. @SHiNjide stapel them

+therealbountybob
I don't see how stapling will help ! ok I've learned one more German word one day I will be able to read the abbuc magazine Anyone finding Goonies too easy will be rapidly brought back down to earth with Conan and his pixel perfectness. Perhaps there are more stages on Goonies (I thought it was 5 but the instructions have more? - make sure you play the disk version guys) Bonus point for first person beating Goonies Will sort the scoring after I've played - probalby both games will get full points but I think Conan may be too hard for most players? Bounus Point for setting new Conan HSC record [shannon 204,940 from Season 1] So what do both games have in common? ballyalley
"Goonies" has a neat way for left-handed players to control the game: Left-Hand Joystick Mode - Before starting game, press L. Rotate the joystick one quarter turn clockwise. An L appears In the upper right comer of the screen to indicate you're In left-hand mode. To return to right-hand mode, press L and rotate the Joystick one quarter turn counterclockwise. I've not seen this control method used in any other game. I tried it and it works, but it feels very odd to me as a right-handed player. I'm curious what others think of this little addition to the game. Are there any lefties out there that want to try this "Left-Hand" control mode and report back what they think?

+therealbountybob
Cinematic themes. Was there a film of Karateka?! No! some nice info on wikipedia though. Reading the first few posts gives things away So Goonies does have more screens; I thought the skulls was the end, but it was a long time ago, in a land far away (Peterborough). Reached 3,800 screen 4 Coinicidentally my Conan disk was next to my Goonies disk but it seems to have a bad sector and doesn't load so re-downloading now.... Mr.Do! also supported Left handers probably there are a couple more... wonder if the Atari FAQ has them listed?
