project update:

Today i did final assembly and testing of the kits, I've been making so far. I also started packing them up.

Some accounting and some quick calculation showed higher production costs than anticipated,

which means I'm going to madly increase the price of the Vectrex Joystick Kit to now US$ 60 ! :dunce:

I'm going to chronologically PM the registered people on the waiting list next and ask, if their orders still are valid and delivery still desired. Everything is completely non-obligatory. If anybody should have lost interest, I'll simply scratch the name and go to the next line.

Until now, I've just made half of the kits. So, if you do not get a PM now, you might be on the lower half of the list. It will take some time to build the remaining kits, but I'm working ...

So finally had some time to put that great kit together and as I have neither time nor motivation making another video, here at least some photos of my version. It is not perfect and I made some stupid mistakes, which I cannot fix without getting another new case, but that´s way too much work for my taste, at least it works pretty well.

;-)

Took me some time to find a proper case and it works great with “analog games” like Star Sling or Spikes Circus, Vector Patrol does not need analog controls, but the auto fire feature is quite helpful there. Also tested it with the latest version of Menschenjagd and it worked great even no analog controls required there. BTW, keep an eye on that game, I personally found it exciting and fun to play and I also like the speech output of that game. One photo shows the new joystick compared to 2 other analog homebrew sticks from my collection.

Thanks vectrexroli,

For showing us your joystick creation! Well done! It's looking quite good, and obviously it's good for gaming, which is the intention of the whole project. ;-)

project update:

I've been making cables, probably one of the most boring jobs in the universe.

At the moment, I'm soldering the remaining pcbs and am almost ready. Final tests still missing.

I will PM the people on the waiting list soon.

I'm going to start gathering up a few parts, but the hardest decision to make is what case I'm going to use in the end. I'd prefer to use the 3D printed version by Richard H, but the Hammond Mfg. case Vectrex Roli used seems like a safe bet as well, although I'd like my buttons to be horizontal and not staggered. Decisions, decisions... :)

project update:

I finished my waiting list! I contacted all people on my list and shipped all items, as ordered. Only a few spare kits are left.

This means, this project is coming to an end now.

Thanks to all supporters!

I genuinely wish I had a vex so I could justify buying one. Will you consider releasing a schematic after the final run is sold out? Vex is one of my dream consoles, and I do have the skills necessary to fabricate a homebrew controller. Stick a pole on the end of a thumbstick since true analog joysticks are as rare as unicorn farts... :P

Well, the circuitry is quite straight forward, but it's just a part of the task. So, I'm not sure, if those schematics really would help somebody.

Equally important:

  • identifying suitable components,
  • ordering things from various stores,
  • designing pcbs according to the parts,
  • designing the mechanical outline
  • getting/making cables
  • getting fitting sticks (most thumbtacks simply fall of the controller, that's why I designed one of my own)
  • fix all the errors

Assuming some major demand, I could consider to provide real DIY-kits for the experts: Unsoldered, just parts and pcbs. That would speed up things considerably and would still be an easy and quick way to make an individual controller, without to much detail work.

project update:

Today I shipped my final VECTREX Joystick Kit.

So, I'm hibernating this project for probably, well, for good.

Almost all components are gone, except some buttons, cables, levers.

Thank you all kit-builders for the support.

Have fun and maybe for all the people, who still did not put the thing together, a little reminder: :waving:Today is a good day to start making your own personal Vectrex joystick.

Best regards,

Rolo

I finished assembling the kit I purchased. I made several modifications but they were fairly easy thanks to how customizable this kit is. Everything controls great and I'm really enjoying the auto fire. If I ever made another, I would do a few things differently. I would make my overlay matte instead of glossy, it is a real fingerprint magnet. Thank you Rolo for a great kit. I really enjoyed building it but will enjoy using it that much more.
