Check that pin #10 on the controller connector is not broken.

Other possible causes:

- bad cable

- defective console (less likely)

It appears that the 10th is not damaged and the wire seems fine so I think the controller may just be busted but mabey not beyond repair

I had a regular and pro controller start to go out on me. Meaning some of the buttons would work, and some wouldn't. I tested the controllers using Matthias Domin's Joypad-testing program (you can do this as well if you have BJL, Skunkboard or a Jaguar CD unit). This verified the controller was still communicating but that some buttons would activate other buttons, multiple buttons, or no button(s) at all.

Knowing this, I took the faulty controllers to someone who knew how to test the circuit boards for a living to see if there were any issues electronically. He determined that the one of the chips (octal gateway, i think...) was the issue. He says this is a common problem with some older consoles. It happens when the controller is plugged into the console after the console has been turned on. Something gets shorted out I guess, can't remember exactly what he said. Basically don't plug in anything after the console has been turned on was what I got from his explanation.

I ordered replacement parts (a couple chips, here is an image of the pro controller, and one for the regular controller), had him solder the new parts into the controller, and now both controllers are working again. I am not saying this is the problem with your controllers, but definitely worth looking into if you happen to know a technician who can check for flaws on circuit boards. Could be a little pricey if you can't call in any favors. The technician's time, plus parts ended up around $100 dollars, but still worth it considering how much pro controllers are going for these days...

Good to know. I am guilty of this sometimes, now I know to avoid it...
